The DUKE rides again!
A wonderful picture of the war between the states, “Horse Soldiers” follows the story of Wayne leading his troopers in an attack deep into enemy territory. Loosely based on a factual event, the Union must cut off the supply lines to Vicksburg. DUKE leads the raid.
This is a fantastic transfer, as others have mentioned. I spotted literally one damaged frame, with a “V” shaped crease in it. The colors blaze off the screeen, and although there are no booklets, inserts, or extras (other than the original trailer), the disc is a real keeper.
Although many see this picture as “Ford-lite,” there are several classic Ford touches throughout the film. The opening shot of the calvary marching in a sundown silhouette is stirring. The charge of the child soldiers is a great moment (you see Wayne tip his hat to them as he rides off).
For me, I like the subtle, “hidden” Ford touches in all of his films, which reveal telling information about characters without the overbearing, in-your-face, and just plain heavy-handed direction in today’s movies.
In “Horse Soldiers”, the dyed-in-the-wool Southern patriot Hannah Hunter has spent several days as prisoner of the Union soldiers. At one point, in order to make her feel better, a soldier gives her a candle for light. Another offers her a fragment of a looking glass. The soldier holds up the broken mirror, and when she looks at her reflection she can see the soldier’s Yankee cap over the top of it, as if she wore it herself. That’s Ford telling us she’s been converted, without slapping us in the face or dumbing it down for us.
You’ll see familiar Ford faces pop up here and there, too. Jack Pennick is in just about all of John Ford’s westerns. Hank Worden and Ken Curtis will be instantly familiar to fans of “The Searchers”. Ken Curtis was also in “Rio Grande” and “The Quiet Man”, and is probably best known as Festus on “Gunsmoke”.
O.Z. Whitehead was in “The Grapes of Wrath” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. Walter Reed was in “Sergeant Rutledge” and “Cheyenne Autumn”.
Bing Russell, who plays Dunker, is the man gunned down in the saloon in another DUKE movie, “Rio Bravo”.
Of couse, other familiar faces include Storther Martin and Denver Pyle as a pair of Confederate deserters.
This is a really solid cavalry film, with The DUKE in the thick of the action. William Holden is a good match as a foil for DUKE.
For those who say DUKE couldn’t act, DUKE has a great scene in the Newton Station bar when he reveals why he doesn’t like doctors.
“Horse Soldiers” is an overlooked gem from Ford, only because his more famous films shine that much more.
My Favorite John Wayne Movie
I am an unabashed fan of John Wayne movies from “Stagecoach” to “The Shootist.” Among them all, “The Horse Soldiers” is my personal favorite.
John Ford captures, in vivid, robust color, the pageantry of the Union and Confederate cavalries. With flags flying, horses pounding, and bugles blaring, Ford and Wayne create sheer movie entertainment. The musical score by David Buttolph perfectly captures the varying moods of the film and complements the stirring visual images. From “I Left My Love” to the “Bonnie Blue Flag,” the music accents the film’s emotions. William Holden and Constance Towers are well-cast as Wayne’s nemesis. The supporting cast is bolstered with many Wayne regulars, including Ken Curtus (Festus from “Gunsmoke”).
Many criticize the factual inaccuracies in John Wayne films. So what! He didn’t intend to make documentaries, he intended to make rousing, entertaining movies. I will always believe this was his best…
The Civil War according to the Duke
I remember the advertisement to The Horse Soldiers today as if the movie was just being released. Way back in 1960, the newspaper ads and trailer all bragged of the big showdown between the Duke, and costar, William Holden.Unfortunately, even at 10 years old, the big showdown was more of a letdown, but that is the only negative aspect of this fine, actioner picture, which was directed by the great, John Ford. This was the only Ford picture set during the Civil War, and he did a masterful job. The story line was simple,Union Colonel Wayne leads soldiers deep into Rebel territory, and Holden as the liberal Army Doctor, whose beliefs often conflict with the Duke’s. As in many Wayne-Ford pictures, there are many magic little moments in this picture which all combine to a thrilling and heart-stopping conclusion. I firmly recommend the Horse Soldiers,especially on DVD. If you have never seen it in wide-screen format, you are in for a real treat. If you are a John Wayne fan from way back, but have already seen The Horse Soldiers, mount up and join the cavalry ride one more time. And who knows, you may even sing along with them this time.

When I was younger, the appeal of Bellow was seeing Mary Poppins bare her chest. Well, it’s collected gargantuan.
But when I got older, and really watched this film again, it was the astounding timing and acting chops of the entire cast that blew me away. The skewering of the Hollywood system this movie delivers is satisfactory. It’s consuming seeing a film so greatly crucify the underside of Hollywood, when these days its so accepted knowledge the incorporation and bureacracy the film industry is. We have the internet and a million entertainment magazines now, its well-liked knowledge how cut-throat it is. But in 1981 things were different and when Bellow came out, it disappeared rapidly it seems. It was probably too “inside” for general audiences to delight in. Plus I’m clear the forces that be made obvious to not trumpet a film which made fun of the people who brought it to cover.
If you appreciated the ‘adult’ humor of Blake Edwards other films such as ’10′, and ‘Skin Deep’, you must recognize ‘SOB.’ You have conventional actors tackling matters and situations that really apply to being an adult in the adult world. Mid-life crisis’, integrity over indecency, getting older, standing up for principles as society seems to worsen around you…these themes bustle rampant in Edward’s films. Its as though Edwards was the last ‘Rat Pack”’-ideaology director making movies about loveable drunks and womanizers who’s hearts were in the honest station, though we glance them comically learn life’s lessons through trial and error choices. Gracious people dealing with the dread of getting older and realizing truths about themselves and the world, helpful and dreadful. But Edward’s always presented it with a ‘Boy’s Club’ mentality that, at least for me, made one hope to have such intelligent characters as friends as I matured and got older.
To any prospective watcher of the film reading these reviews, I’d suggest one thing per your first viewing. Pay attention to the repoire between Felix (the suicidal director) and his cohorts Erving (the doctor), Cully (director friend), and Ben (Felix’s wife/Julie Andrew’s publicist) . These guys are pros and the timing of the scenes they allotment is stellar, old-school, drinking pal ensemble acting. Especially as they 1-by-1 near by the beachhouse to eye Felix and plunge into their routine of spending time together (drinking and one-liners) . These characters were partying Hollywood-style in the 50s and 60s and are now alumni of that classic generation, elders in the world of gradual 70s early 80s starlets and studios. They’ve seen it all and nothing shocks them. And boy do they unexcited preserve up.

Just lots of minute moments, subtle nuances of comraderie that construct this film a gem.
I’ve spent the last few years anxiously awaiting Bawl on DVD, searching and contacting studios,websites, anyone who may have known something but to no avail. Suddenly one day it was impartial another title on a DVD site’s “Upcoming Releases.” I was blissful. I hope it looks and sounds as valid as I imagine.
Wish Edward’s would have done a commentary track for this, like supposedly he’s done for ‘Skin Deep’. Then again, maybe since most of the male leads of the film are deceased, it may have been tough for him to perceive and reminisce.

Well, Julie Andrews DOES bare herself in this movie–which is why some may first want to view it–but this film by her steady life husband Blake Edwards (who also brought us The Pink Panther) does have some other very first-rate qualities. The anguish is that the film-and the DVD itself–also have some potentially abominable points.
On the intelligent side, we are treated to suited performances by some very talented people including Julie Andrews, Richard Mulligan, William Holden, Loretta Swit, Larry Hagman–and more! These actors really worked! The record is comparatively simple: in Hollywood, director Felix Farmer makes a terrific flop of a movie and despite his many previous successes in correct Hollywood style the studio, his wife (Julie Andrews) and everyone else are abandoning him. Yes, as another reviewer points out, some people in Hollywood try to shield them from reporters and publicity backlash–but they really don’t succeed. Felix tries four times to destroy himself until he realizes if they re-shoot the film as some type of pornography flick it will do millions and be the biggest money making film of all time. Everyone is timorous at first of taking the gamble; but they peer Felix’s belief may impartial well be legal and then they all jump on the bandwagon in a brazen and indecent greedy urge. When the film makes it even Felix thinks gleefully of the money it will get as he dies a premature death! The film therefore really lashes out at Hollywood greed and backstabbing. A kindly reminder to us all of how NOT to behave in life! The characters race around so deeply concerned about money and Unbiased money that the film illustrates very sharply how shallow, greedy and cruel Hollywood “people” can be.
Then there are the potentially abominable points. I say they are potentially abominable because not everyone will mediate they are poor! The film does go downhill a bit because of Edwards’ heavy reliance on slapstick to create the film amusing. There are, as another reviewer points out, very few moving extras on this DVD. I agree that it would have been enormous to have Julie Andrews discussing the scene where she bares her chest as well as her thoughts about the movie in general. An interview with Blake Edwards himself would also have been a really provocative extra.
All in all, this is a movie grand for its attack on Hollywood politics, greed, corruption, game playing manipulation and shallowness. The actors worked their tushies off, too! I was impressed with their attractive pain. The humor is fairly obedient, about a B+ in quality–although if you like slapstick (which is perfectly heavenly, of course!) then the humor grade goes higher. Nevertheless, the sound quality could definitely be better and there are few extras, however, so I give this DVD four stars.

Hitchcock on the right track
“Strangers on a Train” is that rarity, an Alfred Hitchcock film concerning which one talks about an actor’s performance almost as much as the director’s. The actor, of course, is Robert Walker, presenting his remarkable portrayal of Bruno Anthony, the rich, unstable man who offers the hero Guy Haines a deadly proposition: he’ll kill Guy’s wife Miriam (played by the interesting Laura Elliott) if Guy will kill Bruno’s father. Because they are strangers on a train who do not know their intended victims, there will be no motives, therefore perfect alibis. Guy doesn’t take Bruno seriously, which turns out to be a fatal mistake. Bruno is a complicated part. Although he is obssessed with his own superiority, he can be incredibly petty (popping a little boy’s balloon just for the meanness of it), not to mention prissy (“I’m afraid I don’t know what a `smoocher’ is!”). The character seems to overshadow the entire movie, which is appropriate, because Bruno casts a shadow over the easy, affluent world in which he lives. When he crashes the senator’s cocktail party, it’s like Satan has arrived, striding through polite society. And, no, Walker was not nominated for an Oscar. Neither was Joseph Cotten for “Shadow of a Doubt”. Neither was Anthony Perkins for “Psycho”. The Academy evidently had difficulty with Hitchcock’s anti-heroes. Hitchcock originally wanted William Holden for the role of Guy Haines, but I think Holden was so savvy and macho, it would have been difficult to accept him as a psycopath’s pawn. Farley Granger is atheletic enough to be convincing as a tennis champ, but he has a boyishness which makes the vulnerable aspects of the character believable. The film is filled with the touches one associates with Hitchcock. Some are obvious, like Miriam’s strangulation reflected in her eyeglasses. Others are more subtle: After the murder, Bruno approaches Guy outside Guy’s apartment house. At first Guy cannot tell who is calling his name in the dark. Bruno is standing near a large gate with wrought-iron bars; and, as Guy comes near him, he steps behind the gate — in other words, he’s behind bars. Then, after he has told Guy about Miriam’s death and Guy is absorbing the shock, a police car pulls up in front of Guy’s apartment house and Guy himself ducks behind the gate. Now they’re BOTH behind bars. Hitchcock was a genius, no doubt about it.I wonder how many viewers have noticed the odd discrepency near the end. Bruno has stepped off the train at Metcalf, holding the incriminating cigarette lighter he hopes to plant on the amusement park island, thus framing Guy. A pedestrian brushes by him and the lighter falls into a storm drain in the street. Bruno, frantic, tries to enlist the aid of passersby. However, he says (not once but twice) “I dropped my cigarette CASE in the drain!” Walker, of course, was in the process of drinking himself to death; but the mistake could easily have been corrected with a little dubbing. It’s bothered me for years why it wasn’t.Director of Photography Robert Burks began his long association with Hitchcock on this picture. He must have worked night and day to satisfy Hitchcock’s demands, but his loveliest effect is the amusement park’s neon lights against a glowing black-and-white sunset.The film’s mood is enhanced by Dimitri Tiomkin’s romantically mysterious score. It’s particularly striking in the movie’s”coda” when Guy is trying desperately to finish a tennis game (allegro) and Bruno is desperately trying to reach that damn lighter (adagio). Hitchcock and Tiomkin worked a couple of more times together but never more effectively than in thisdazzling masterpiece.
Widescreen vs. 35mm for Strangers on a Train
It’s important to note two things about this edition of “Strangers on a Train.” First off, the description on Amazon.com’s page is incorrect. This DVD is not in widescreen. The second thing is, to you widescreen buffs out there (including myself) — Relax! This film was never shot in widescreen. In fact, prior to 1953 (The Robe), there was never anything bigger than 35mm! This is why this film (and you’ll be surprised to hear), many, many classic films will never be produced in widescreen. They don’t exist. You should buy this DVD because of the video quality and the extra “goodies.” Gone with the Wind in widescreen? Nope, never was, even though it was blown up to 70mm and cropped horribly in the 1968 re-issue. What’s out there on DVD on Gone with the Wind is standard 35mm “TV semi-square” framing, because that’s the way it was shot. Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Citizen Kane? Nope, never shot in anything greater than 35mm. It’s a Wonderful Life? No again. Widescreen is limited to theatrical films issued for the most part, after 1953, when competition with television forced studios to come up with the “panoramic” gimmicks to bring people back into the theaters. This is period (1953-1963) when Cinemascope, Todd-AO, VistaVision, Super Panavision 70 and other widescreen formats were born — and the most extreme example was Cinerama, which used three cameras and is used to best effect in the DVD version of How the West Was Won. So don’t fret, this DVD is good, crisp and clean and formatted as Alfred Hitchcock intended! Tomorrow’s movies will be in IMAX (see Fantasia 2000, in selected theaters now).
Hitchcock’s Best!
“Strangers On A Train” should be rated as Hitchcock’s absolute best.
To begin with, it features a perfect performance by Robert Walker, an actor who would be dead within a year after making this great movie.
Walker had previously played some wonderful roles, but he astounded the world with his acting ability once “Strangers On A Train” was released.
Aside from Walker’s amazing performance, “Strangers On A Train” is full of half-hidden meanings which relate to the dual personality each of us possesses.
Hitchcock was a true genius, who not only understood both the dark and the bright sides of the human psyche, but who also knew how to depict that understanding by way of film.
I have watched “Strangers On A Train” a dozen or more times, and never tire of watching it yet again, each time finding something new that I had not noticed the time I watched it before.
But, the main reason I watch this film so often is to enjoy the exceptional , perfect performance by Robert Walker. Walker was only in his 30s when he died. He was a tragic figure in real life. He died much too soon, and we are very fortunate to be able to observe his wonderful talent, preserved in this movie, almost fifty years after his passing.

Its droll how (to me) lines from movies sometimes bubble to the surface of consciousness from out of nowhere. I hadn’t concept about “Alvarez Kelly” in years. Recently, in my minds’s scrutinize, I recalled the image of an eye-patched Confederate leader named Col.Tom Rossiter,(Richard Widmark) silently and solemnly put a question to “Did you please her…..Kelly”? That simple line was so fraught with innuendo and suggestion that it always stuck with me. So on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I popped a widescreen version of “Alvarez Kelly” into my DVD and sat befriend to review and savor this 1966 Civil War oater (or should I say “beefer”)? It was a decent bound. Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) enjoys pursuing the finer things in life, his earthly habits subsidized in piece by trading as a cattle speculator or war profiteer depending upon your point of concept. In this capacity, he has no particular loyalty to the North or the South. However, and as the opening credits point out, all armies in all times require food as well as armaments to prevail. As the Yankees and the Confederates fight for control over Kelly’s 2500 head of cattle, he is unwillingly forced to provide his services to the boys in Gray. This fact in no draw serves to curb his rather prodigious libido, and he continues the shameless pursuit of any woman who has the slightest physical beauty. Released in the mid-Sixties, Bond mania was in beefy swing and I would argue that this film was influenced by and shared some clear similarities in attitude and tone with agent 007. Anyway, enter Liz Pickering (Janice Rule), the blooming but long suffering intended of Rossiter, a physically diminished yet plucky and sterling leader of the Southern cause. Liz is instantly drawn to Kelly’s virility and earthly ways and inevitably, favors are shared. Her rather brief on hide appearance only serves to provide a convienient source of personal friction between Rossiter and Kelly. Inevitably though, the war intrudes and a battle for control of the cattle looms. Kelly, awarded with a battlefield commission takes charge of a desperate area in his contain original procedure. The cinematography of this film is crisp. The strong performances by Holden and Widmark really play off each other well. All in all, this Western is elevated a notch or two above the average because of Edward Dmytryk’s solid direction, an acceptable musical get although they could have lost the hokey song at the beginning, decent photography, favorable character actors, an enthralling premise and manages to speak all this in under two hours. Given contemporary standards, I can’t attend but wonder how Hollywood would handle a randy character like Kelly today.
This is a helpful American Civil War adventure film rotund of bravado and action. William Holden and an one-eyed Richard Widmark turn in credible performances as reluctant partners in a raid for Union cattle. It also features Janice Rule, a foppish Patrick O’Neal and a bawdy Victoria Shaw. There are some friendly skirmish sequences and a space containing some witty dialogue. Some of the plantation sequence is a puny reminiscent of John Ford’s “The Horse Soldiers” also with Holden. It contains an adequate obtain serene by Johnny Green of “Raintree County” distinction and delicate photography by Joseph MacDonald. The stalwart Edward Dmytryk late directed it for pure cinematic enjoyment. The DVD widescreen images are as crisp as ever.
