I really enjoyed the first volume of “Demon Prince ENMA” because it had a capable balance of comedy and a kindly balance of creepy, scare and the characters of Enma, Yukihime, Kappa and Grandpa Chapeauji solving mysteries was very fun to look.

The series has its roots ala “Dororon Enma” serve in 1973 when the group were great younger and Enma and Yukihime were children and more of an anime targeted towards children benefit in the day.

With the first volume, Go Nagai’s dusky and comic style is very evident and with volume 2, things choose a crazy shift and becomes more like an American alarm film ala “SAW” and “FINAL DESTINATION”

Not only are people getting killed by the monsters but a major character is killed as well.

In episode 3 titled “Karuma: Misery Swirling Demon”, a demon has made it’s fade, killing some familiar faces from the first volume and also a major character. Five individuals are brought together and ruin up in a mansion. The inescapable mansion has no windows, keeps changing each time and its quite evident, there is a monster that feeds on their darkness and is out to raze them.

In episode 4 titled “Enma”, the surviving members of the inescapable mansion try to fight to finish alive and Enma makes his disappear against the demon.

In the first volume, there were a lot of outdoor scenery but in the final two volumes, everything is taking set in a mansion. The mansion is shown quite a bit ala CG but I really enjoyed the first volume because it takes set in a variety of areas but nevertheless, the final volume is quite creepy and burly of violence. A lot of darkness, blood, etc. The video features a 1.78:1 transfer and is anamorphic 16:9LB with the special features in 4:3.

AUDIO:

As usual, Bandai Visual continues their audiophile treatment with a 448 kbps encoding for the 2.0 and 5.1 mix. The screech acting by the actors are very done, definitely showcasing the emotions of dismay throughout the two episodes. But that creepy ambiance via audio is serene done quite well!

EXTRAS:

Special features include scream actor interviews wtih S. Sato who plays Kapaeru and M. Yamamoto who plays Sat-chan), Cho who plays Grandpa Chapeauji and S. Kobayashi who plays Yuri. This was a blast to perceive and to hear the characters talk about their scenes of the final volume.

Included with the first volume DVD is a 16-page booklet which feature character profiles, settings and even short manga pages of by Nagai and short chronicle by Hayasaka Ritsuko and others.

I really enjoyed this anime. Nagai is unprejudiced a master in creating mecha, cute girl and dim anime storylines and with “Demon Prince ENMA”, it’s definitely an engrossing twist to the “detective agency” style of anime of ghostbuster type of teams.

Enma and team are not there to set the world or humanity, they unbiased want to retrieve their demons and bring them assist to the underworld and if they resist, well they net destroyed.

So, for those who are expecting the victims to gain solace by a typical feel-good blissful ending which you tend to seek from anime with a hero or heroes coming to place the day, then prepare for the Nagai twist because what you deem is probably not what you’re going to seek information from.

Volume 1 was involving and funny because it featured more monster hunting and the main characters of Enma, Yukihime and Kapaeru considerable more.

This volume focuses more on the characters we met from the first volume and how five of them must fight from being killed by a demon in a creepy mansion.

Volume 2 by no means is a used tale. If anything, the storyline gets more creepy, darker and more violent and less silly.

I was also surprised by the death of one of the main characters. And speaking of the main characters, I admit that I was a bit surprised to peer less of the main characters but its understandable why it was done and it was allotment of the strategy to capture/destroy the demon.

The final ending was a bit of a surprise though. I don’t want to say it was a let-down but it’s one of those endings where its left interpreted by the viewer and looking online to explore how others conception the final minutes, it seems they are also perplexed by the final moments.

Nevertheless, I got what I expected from a Nagai alarm anime series. The first volume was truly enchanting and a gigantic balance of alarm and humor but the second volume becomes focused on more of the creepy, fear and violence and I order, missing that humor was a wee bit of a letdown since the first two episodes had so distinguished of it.

I guess it felt like an another American fright film cliche of a group of people together and everyone tries not to score murdered.

Nontheless, the final volume was unexcited delectable to observe. It was definitely creepy!

By episode 3 of Demon Prince Enma, it seems like demon sightings by Enma, Yukihime, and Kapaeru have become a rather rare occurrence. When they DO encounter one, it’s usually a weakling compared to demons they’ve faced in the past and goes meekly support to the Underworld without a fight. Frankly, Enma is getting rather bored. Kapaeru has even begun chatting up a young girl on the internet, a girl with gigantic problems. She thinks her mother wants to demolish her. But is there a demon leisurely her mother’s psychotic behaviors? In Episode 4, a group of people comprising of two college students, a police inspector, a teacher, and a journalist all fetch themselves in a mysterious house that they can pick up no hurry from. Within it, they are forced to relive the most gross moments of their life. And they were all led there by a mysterious woman in white that strongly resembles Yukihime.

This second dvd is actually the ruin of the road for the series Demon Prince Enma since only 4 episodes were made in Japan. I thoroughly enjoyed the prove, even though both dvds are extremely overpriced at 40$ a pop for about 70 minutes of material. The high effect point will anxiety lots of potential buyers away and is a recede that could sabotage Bandai’s profits in America. I felt that this was the weaker of the two volumes of Enma, mainly because he appears very dinky in the 4th episode. That episode focuses almost exclusively on the people in the house instead of the main characters of the anime. In fact, Enma, Yukihime, and Kapaeru have seemed like supporting characters at times. The focus of the writers seemed more on the effects the demons were having on the humans they possessed. This actually added to the mysterious nature of Enma and pals and gave over most of the episodes to Ringu-like fear. The animation and earn of the present were astounding and lovely and continued to grunt tragedy, regret, and eroticism and no especial order. Lacking from these last two episodes was the shadowy humor of the first two, which I missed a bit. A really qualified exhibit.

All Mine To Give (1957)

A touching drama, All Mine To Give tells the sunless tale of six pioneer children who struggle to discontinue together on Christmas Day following the deaths of their parents. It stars Patty McCormack and Glynnis Johns along with Ellen Corby. This is perhaps one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen, and I can remember the first time I saw it 40 years ago when I was 10.

This classic Christmas romantic comedy stars Janet Leigh as a terrible young widow torn between a dreary successful businessman and a romantic ne’er-do-well. Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey co-star. I’m determined you can figure out which actor plays which man. This movie is very old and realistic. Nobody is all abominable or all agreeable in this film.

It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947)

This screwball comedy is about a hobo and friends who travel into a mansion while the owners are out of town for their Christmas holiday. The film was directed by Roy Del Ruth and stars Don DeFore and Ann Harding.

Blossoms in the Dust (1941)

Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon star in this legal legend of Edna Gladney, a woman who devoted her life to finding homes for unwanted infants. Felix Bressart co-stars. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy. This film is satisfactory, but doesn’t express anywhere halt to the honest yarn of Edna Gladney. She didn’t need all of the family melodrama portrayed in the film to motivate her, and she was a valid force in the care of children in Fort Worth,Tx. throughout her life.

Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 2 (All Mine to Give / Holiday Affair / It Happened on 5th Avenue / Blossoms in the Dust)

I wish people would review the trusty product and not the movies! It’s bothersome to wade through the many wanna-be movie reviewers to pick up to any information about the product, which is what we’re here to acquire! One can glean competent movie reviews elsewhere.

Each DVD comes in a keepcase, and the covers beget classic or modern poster artwork. However, if you are a fan of Vol 1, don’t interrogate the same here! The DVD presentations of these movies is extremely minimal. There are NO extra materials, no assert scene access, unbiased play the movie or setup languages (subtitles) . While the movies themselves have chapter stops, you can’t even derive to a specific chapter from the menus.

Vol 1 had improbable presentations, with extra materials, period shorts and cartoons, and trailers. If you’re expecting the same for Vol 2, you’ll be disappointed. However, if you’re a fan of classic movies and specifically these movies, you will get a few hours of enjoyment here.

Things win a more serious turn in volume two of “Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi,” and the wild chaos of the first volume starts to engage shape. Like the previous episodes,Sasshi and Arumi dart from world to world, meeting the bouncy and eager Mune Mune (“Chesty chesty” in Japanese) who adapts to each world and spurs along the craziness. This time, a original character is revealed in a mysterious blue-haired man to whom Mune Mune is inexplicably drawn.

The first episode has the kids in a dinosaur world, with Mune Mune as the jungle princess in the appropriate leopard-skin bikini. Running from worry, they meet the blue-haired man who says that their fates are linked, but he is mild unsure and clouded. Wild and humorous, it maintains the tone of previous episodes.

Next, a Film Noir world sees Sasshi and Arumi in grown up bodies, on opposite sides of a risky games of gangsters and copper. Arumi joins the short-skirted Abeno Angels police squad, while Sasshi masquerades as professional sniper Rugolgo (a parody of “Golgo 13″) . Some large gags here, but the tone changes when Mune Mune comes face-to-face with the blue-haired man, and flashes with nettle and rage. The blue-haired man reveals a deep secret of Sasshi’s to Arumi, and things originate to become positive.

Finally, the comedy and slapstick ceases entirely, and the Studio Gainax brilliance begins to shine through in the third episode. A flashback, focusing on the founding of the Abenobashi Shopping arcade, and the Admire Triangle that develops between Sasshi’s grandfather, the blue-haired man and a dazzling 18-year former girl named Mune. A bittersweet episode on fate and esteem, it is a nice demolish from the wackiness and non-sequitor nature of the series.

A substantial DVD all in all, with three wonderful episodes and the series really inspiring along. As with other DVDs in this series, there are actually some suitable special features included hilarious assure actor outtakes.

As usual, the only plight with “Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi” is the Osaka dialect, which the producers have dealt with in a few ways. The English dub is rotten, featuring faux Southern accents in an approximation attempt. This is ridiculous, as the Osaka dialect is an urban dialect, not rural, and a thick Brooklyn accent would be more appropriate. The subtitle takes a more deliver come, but level-headed loses the flavor of the language, and for US audiences it is difficult to so firmly location this series in Osaka as the creators intended.

For those not informed in the ways of anime, a thirteen-episode reveal, like Abenobashi or Serial Experiments: Lain is distributed on four discs. This is unprejudiced the map it is, and you pay more for a better recount (for comparison, check out the Fox DVDs. Represent quality is aloof satisfactory, but artifacting tends to point to up more often due to the lower bitrates.)

As for this particular disc, the second episode, featuring a 20s-era crime world, and the third episode, detailing the past of the older generations are the gems. I would actually rate this about 4.25, but I horror that this disc would be damaged by the review below. Again, I do esteem this series. Truly a exquisite viewing experience.

Mario Bava was one of the most underrated filmmakers of the 20th century. So it’s appropriate that the first volume of the “Mario Bava Collection” (or “Bava Box”) was one of the best releases of the last year, and reintroduced us to classics of Bava’s that had fallen out of conception. The second volume objective continues that tradition, with large chunks of classic, stylish fear.

“Baron Blood” begins the collection — Baron Otto Van Kleist was a savage, scandalous guy who liked to torture people for fun (assume Vlad Tepes), until a witch’s curse effect him out of commission. Centuries later, his descendent Peter (Antonio Cantafora) returns to his family’s gothic castle, and decides that he and visiting student Eva (Elke Sommer) will recite the incantation that will return “Baron Blood” to the world. Of course, he actually DOES return, and soon Peter, Eva and Peter’s uncle are forced to battle his psychotic, deformed ancestor.

“Lisa and the Devil” is more or less what it sounds like, with our heroine Lisa (Elke Sommer) a tourist going through Italy. She encounters some freaky folklore challenging a local painting of the Devil and the Plain — and a man (Telly Savalas) who eerily resembles the painted Satan. When her proceed group is invited by the man to halt at a spooky villa, Lisa becomes ensnared in a maze of nightmares and death.

Then we procure something that ISN’T gothic anxiety — “Roy Colt and Winchester Jack,” a comedy-western. Failed outlaw Roy Colt (Brett Halsey) has decided to become a law-abiding sheriff — until he learns of a fancy blueprint to buried gold. Of course, he scurries after it — but to salvage his hands on it, he’ll have to beat out an Indian prostitute, a dynamiting Russian Reverand, and his customary partner Winchester Jack (Charles Southwood) .

Then it’s “Four Times That Night,” a colourful, campy prefer on Akira Kurosawa’s”Rashomon.” Suave Gianni (Brett Halsey) starts pursuing afraid, chaste Tina (Daniela Giordano), until she agrees to date him. The night ends with his face scratched and her dress shredded — at first observe, you’d consider he objective got too grabby, and she fought him off. But there are four different versions of what happened that night, and none of them agree…

Then it’s aid to gore and dread, with one of the very first slasher flicks. “Bay Of Blood” opens with the death of a countess and her murdering husband. Unlike many directors, Mario Bava didn’t need massive budgets or CGI to effect his shiny movies — fair suited actors and a haunting backdrop. Gothic castles with dungeons, misty forests, psychedelic islands and clubs, eerie villas, and the unsafe streets of Italy are all dilapidated here, and performances that range from vivid (Steele) to merely proper (Halsey) .

In fact, Bava was such a vivid director that he remove a cliche or subpar movie (such as “Baron Blood”), and turn it into something fresh and deep. He made employ of misty lighting, eerie camerawork, stunning exercise of light and shadow, gory deaths and strange symbolism. A few also splash in some psychedelic colour and sex. And he was usually able to work in an unexpected, sometimes ghastly twist to each movie’s ending.

It’s very grand a film of the slow sixties, fun, generous film, but not huge. A magnificent section of nudity and sexual squawk, which makes it not accessible for minors, beautiful warning.

’5 Dolls For an August Moon’ (1970) features several impressive visual sequences and succeeds due to some gargantuan art direction. A young scientist with an industrial formula to sell, has invited a group of rich industrialist to a dinky island, along with their wives or lovers. Everyone has a range of motives when the guests and scientist originate to be killed off. This even has elements of a study thriller, via ‘Diabolik’ at obvious moments. Apparently this film has divided critics of Bava. It’s a radiant safe attempt at a non occult thriller.

Bava has been so tied to his reputation as a director of fright pictures, people tend to not realize he was varied enough to work in the Western genre, as well as sword and sandal Viking pictures, which makes ‘Roy Colt and Winchester Jack’ (1970) a fun narrate. A satirical Western with an affectionate nod to Sergio Leone, a pair of good-natured outlaws on a hunt for a fortune in gold. Bava’s film is not for the faint of heart, yet unlike the FT13 films, there’s a plausible motive slow most of the killings, the greed of a family inheritance. Feminist film critics will often dismiss Bava for being a misogynist, yet often in Bava’s pictures women are fair as pleasurable to commit destroy as men, aside from the fact that Bava shows a precise reverence towards women, as complicated souls with desires. Some have dismissed this film and yet, unlike many slasher films where there’s a collected focus on the spectacle of violence, one is left not comfortable with the carnage. There’s a sunless, fatalistic, ironic belief and subtext here about how violence feeds on itself, as well as an ecological theme that is highly skeptical for the need for humanity.

For most Bava fan’s, ‘Baron Blood’ (1972) has remained a popular, featuring a qualified and menacing performance from Joseph Cotton as the resurrected Baron. Elke Sommer’s performance isn’t as memorable as her role in ‘Lisa’, which we’ll rep to in a moment. Bava has always excelled at producing Gothic scare and he delivers this film with a lot of flare. The fresh relative of Otto von Kleist, the injurious Baron of the 16th Century, inadvertently resurrects the Baron from the musty spell of a witch he burned at the stake. Cotton manages a valid, menacing and slightly off performance until the revelation of his character.

The less that’s said about ‘The House of Exorcism’, the better, in spite of the fact that Lamberto Bava assisted with the re-shoots. ‘Lisa and The Devil’ (1973) is another matter. Lisa, a tourist, sees a fresco of the devil leading away the dreary, and this triggers her into a Labyrinth of a unlit account. Is this her fevered imagination? Is she being lured by the devil? Is she the resurrected spirit of a lover from another era? ‘Lisa’ is Bava’s most surreal, cryptic and layered film as well as shapely. Telly Savalas is astonishing as a charming, sophisticated and ruthless beelzebubb. Elke Sommer delivers a compelling performance. A clear wreck from the usual supernatural film.

‘Rabid Dogs’ (1974) a.k.a. ‘Kidnapped’, would have been the definitive final statement from Bava had it seen a estimable release. Sadly, when the film’s financier died, his entire estate as well as the print of the film was seized by the Italian Court. A marked stylistic dissimilarity from Bava’s other work, a gritty Euro-Crime drama. A very gritty film that one could gape as a staunch inspiration for a director like Tarantino.

This second station is a cramped more thin in the extras. Unlike the special segments produced for the ‘Black Sunday, Girl Who Knew Too Much’, and ‘Black Sabbath’. The only modern special segments added are from ‘Kidnapped’, and that disc was already released as a separate package. Considering, that I gain at this writing, Elke Sommer is detached alive, I’m surprised that no current interviews were conducted for her reflections about working on ‘Baron Blood’ or ‘Lisa’. There are modern commentaries from Bava expert, Tim Lucas for ‘Lisa and the Devil, Baron Blood’ and ‘Bay of Blood’, all apt, the commentary for ‘Bay of Blood’ is a itsy-bitsy looser for a Lucas commentary. An additional older commentary of ‘Lisa’ with Elke Sommer and Alfredo Leone is included. All of the film prints are righteous and presented in the usual widescreen ratios of 1.85:1 or 1.78:1. The films ’5 Dolls’ and ‘Four Times’ are included on a duel disc. Many of the films include trailers, radio spots, or Poster and aloof galleries. Unfortunately, there’s no production liner notes in any of the sets or updated biographies. Thus, the reason for the rating.

Hopefully, this will do well enough to give Anchor Bay grounds to release more titles. Pardon the length, Bava’s work is frequently unforgettable, resplendent, macabre, disturbing and fresh, don’t miss this.

Naruto Shippuden is a runt different from the early Naruto years. But it is high octane adrenaline! The action and sage line arc takes up to 30 episodes before Sai comes into the report. The only dissappointment I feel is in Viz Media, why are they bothering to release Shippuden 1 disc (4 episodes) at a time? They should go directly to box sets! And by box sets I mean, they should carry at least 20 episodes or more. Shipuden season 1 is like 50 or more episodes, each season is great! Viz Media, why must you milk us of our hard earned money and give us so slight in return?! Anyone who buys this disc or the previous disc in this series, I suggest you contain off watching them until you have disc 10 in hand, these episodes earn you and never let you go, you will writhe in agony until the next release!

So for all fans rejoice again as the Shippuden episodes have finally arrived for us all to indulge in…

Two years ago Warners released “The Doris Day Collection” which snappy became a best seller. It contained some choice Day films from the 50′s and 60′s and reacquainted a lot of people with the wide-ranging talents that Doris Day possesses. There was a reason she reigned as the top box-office female star in history, a title she holds to this day. Volume 2 contains 6 more reasons why Doris Day unexcited has that unusual ability to create audiences feel warm, sigh, joyful, and very happy.

Included in this collection is Day’s cover debut, 1948′s “Romance on the High Seas”. It’s a ravishing technicolor treat – a throwback to an era when movies were designed to entertain and it succeeds gloriously. Miss Day introduces the classic song, “It’s Magic” and while not first-billed, steals the present from Jack Carson (the first of three successive teamings), Janis Paige, S.Z. Sakall and a vast cast. It’s a case of inaccurate identity, but what is most memorable is the ease with which Miss Day seems to acquit herself on film. She’s a natural – silly, dependable, and glorious. There’s a bit of the leisurely Betty Hutton in her performance but ultimately she proves herself to be one of a kind.

The rest of the titles each have their high points. “My Dream is Yours” has lots of grit in this variation of “A Star is Born” with Day’s star rising and for apt reason. My common song is her heartfelt rendition of “I’ll String Along With You” – flawless. Other highlights include a sequence in which she and Carson team with Bugs Bunny.

“I’ll Gaze You in My Dreams” is the incredible bio of lyricist Gus Kahn and contains a trunkload of classic tunes sung perfectly by Day, co-star Danny Thomas and Patrice Wymore in a knockout performance. It has noteworthy more grit than the typical biography and Miss Day is exceptionally respectable as Kahn’s wife Grace. Michael Curtiz has directed the film in dusky and white which seems to design it more serious than many films of this mileau.

“On Moonlight Bay” (1951) and it’s sequel 1953′s “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” are like a couple of Currier and Ives pictures brought to life. Warm-hearted and filled with a get of substantial tunes, they lovingly remove an era that might have been or at least was in memory. Miss Day, co-star Gordon MacRae and “family” – Leon Ames, Rosemary DeCamp, Billy Gray and Mary Wickes, seem like a family. Loosely based on Tarkington’s “Penrod” tales, it had critics carping that it wasn’t “Meet Me In St. Louis” and it isn’t. On its fill terms it is impartial as savory filled with charm and righteous warmth, never forced and never trite.

The weakest link in the collection is probably “Lucky Me”, the first technicolor musical and subject to notable pans at the time of its release.

Miss Day and a magnificent supporting cast including Bob Cummings, Nancy Walker, Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy Jr and Martha Hyer, give it their all. The songs may not be memorable but they are energetically rendered and there are enough chuckles sprinkled throughout to preserve the film going.

One will reach away from this 12 hour marathon of Doris Day films feeling extremely sterling, exhilirated in fact, and possibly wishing that Hollywood quiet made the kind of feel-good movie that Doris specialized in during her 7 years at Warners. Feeling that intention in this day and age is something not to be scoffed at. If someone could bottle that indefinable quality that Doris Day possesses and piece it with the world, we’d all attend.

THE DORIS DAY COLLECTION: VOLUME 2, from Warner Home Video, has six of Miss Day’s earliest and most toothsome musical romances. Five were filmed in a square TV ratio, while the sixth is in CinemaScope. And five are in brand-new Technicolor, while a sixth is in B&W.

ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS (1948) –Doris’ feature film debut is in eye-blinding Technicolor and space on a Caribbean hover with erroneous identity. Georgia Garrett (Doris) poses as Mrs. Elvira Kent on the ship, while the true Elvira (Janis Paige) stays home to gaze on her maybe philandering husband. Georgia is wooed by Jack Carson, while Mr. Kent (Don DeFore) hires someone to seek on the trusty Elvira, who is presumably on the same ship but isn’t. Oscar Levant is fantastic. Michael Curtiz directed a witty script by the Epstein Brothers and I.A.L. Diamond. Cameos include Franklin Pangborn and Grady Sutton. Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn songs include the classic “It’s Magic”. It must have been a hit even in 1948 because it is sung three times. This is an absolutely unbelievable movie. Bonuses include a theatrical trailer, a musical short, and a Tweety & Sylvester short.

MY DREAM IS YOURS (1949) –Michael Curtiz directs again and Jack Carson (Doug Blake) again is the romantic male lead for Doris as singer Martha Gibson. When arrogant singing star Lee Bowman acts like a prima donna one too many times, Doug fires him and becomes agent to Martha, who becomes a common and likeable radio singer. Astonishing supporting cast of pros includes S. Z. Sakall, Eve Arden, and Adolphe Menjou, with cameos by Franklin Pangborn, Edgar Kennedy, and Bugs Bunny! Harry Warren and Sammy Cahn songs include “My Dream is Yours” and “Someone Like You.” This is another gleaming Technicolor production. Bonuses include an Oscar-nominated drama short, a Joe McDoakes comedy short, a classic cartoon, and a theatrical trailer.

I’LL Look YOU IN MY DREAMS (1952) caught me off-guard because it is one of Doris Day’s few B&W movies. Calm, it is photographed by Ted McCord, whose credits range from Esteem OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948) to THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) . We have Danny Thomas as song writer Gus Kahn, who apparently wrote the lyrics to literally hundreds of favorite songs in the first few decades of the 20th Century, several dozen with girl friend turned wife Grace (Doris) . Among the Kahn favorites are the title song, “I Wish I Had a Girl,” “Treasure Me or Leave Me” (which Doris would again notify in the 1955 biographical musical drama), “Makin’ Whoopee,” “Comely Baby,” and “It Had to Be You.” It’s an spirited and tuneful biography, again directed by Michael Curtiz. The two stars are well matched. DVD bonuses include an unusually insightful drama short called “The Camouflage Director”, a hilarious Foghorn Leghorn cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

ON MOONLIGHT BAY (1951) and its sequel, BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON (1952), are Technicolor gems about tiny town Indiana life on either side of World War One. They are inspired by the “Penrod” stories of Booth Tarkington. Doris Day and a very young Gordon MacRae star as a romantic couple; he spends two movies trying to resolve if he wants to bag married, which is wild because (1) Doris is a valid sweetheart of a person even as a “grease monkey” and tomboy, and (2) he proposes and kisses her passionately in the street at the demolish of BAY. Leon Ames plays her father, virtually the same role he played in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) ; Rosemary DeCamp from YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942) is Mom; Billy Gray is Day’s pesty kid brother; and Mary Wickes is the cook who never met a tray of food she liked. The color is fall listless gorgeous; the directors are, respectively, Roy Del Ruth and David Butler, very competent craftsman filmmakers. Songs in BAY include “Cuddle Up a Small Closer,” “It’s a Long Draw to Tipperary” and “Pack Up Your Troubles.” and the title song as the film’s finale. Full-fledged musical numbers in SILVERY MOON include “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “King Chanticleer”, and the title song with ice skates on Miller’s Pond. Bonuses with BAY are a vintage sing-a-long short, a Technicolor cartoon, and the theatrical trailer. SILVERY MOON bonuses include two fantastic Joe McDoakes comedy shorts, an Oscar-nominated cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

One of Doris Day’s first films in CinemaScope, LUCKY ME (1955) has her as a superstitious woman named Candy Williams. The unluckiest day of Candy’s life turns out to be the luckiest through twists of fate. Also starring with Miss Day are Robert Cummings, Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy Jr. and Nancy Walker. Intellectual musical numbers include “High Hopes,” “I Snarl to the Stars,” “I Wanna Tell Like an Angel,” and half a dozen more. It’s a very contented and intelligent Technicolor and wide-screen concoction with a remastered soundtrack. Bonuses include the nostalgic short “When the Talkies Were Young”, an Oscar-nominated cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

There is also a Volume One, of course. It includes such improbable Doris Day musical classics as THE PAJAMA GAME, CALAMITY JANE, Cherish ME OR LEAVE ME, BILLY ROSE’S JUMBO, PLEASE DON”T EAT THE DAISIES, and three more slightly lesser Day movies. The series is loosely based on the trusty exploits of the slow Col.Greg “Pappy” Boyington, credited with 28 “kills” during the war and winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor (CMH) . A upright American hero.

All in all, a fun testosterone romp.

Perhaps Universal will release Season 2 in one complete package next go around. And a vow over by one of the actors or producers would be a welcome edition.

Along with other fans of this display, I’m jubilant that finally after a 2 year wait Vol. 2 was released on DVD.

I bought this title a few weeks ago and must say that even though I’m very overjoyed to have this note on DVD I’m also a bit disappointed in this DVD release out of the following reasons:

No digital restoration of the recount (but I can live with that)

What bugs me the most is that 5 episodes were crammed on each of disc 1 and disc 2 but disc 3 only holds two episodes. I contemplate they should have divided it evenly up into 4 episodes per disc that contrivance the studio doesn’t have to compress the episodes so worthy and have a better report quality. This might be a point that should be taken under consideration if Universal plans to release Vol. 3 of this explain on DVD.

No specials on the dvd state.

The explain itself receives 5 stars, but the DVD release only 3 stars because of the reasons mentioned above.
