This is a fine movie and a gargantuan DVD. The animation is some of the best ever done. Sight, in particular, the life-like Nile River and Red Sea at the beginning and destroy of the describe. The chariot bustle that opens the movie is thrilling and the parting of the Red Sea is breath taking. Frankly, I hesitated to peer this because I believed that it would impartial be “The Ten Commandments” re-visited. The DVD “extras” form it well worth the effect. In particular, I found the comparison drawings showing the creation of the chariot run to be particularly compelling. The music and songs perfectly compliment the action and are never distracting. Clearly, Disney is not the only studio that can acquire a substantial engrossing film.
How exactly do you translate the tale of Exodus…the epic of freedom…into an Entertaining film…? How did they do it? Rarely have I felt tears at the BEGINNING of a movie…when Y’sheved(Moses’ Mother) started to stammer her lullaby IN HEBREW, I almost started crying. Since I always select piquant films to the “loyal thing”, I felt “finally, a perfect film…” Being Jewish and seeing this movie during the month of Pesach(Passover) was literally a religious experience. I was touched. Seeing the people deliver Mi’Chamocha as the left Egypt pulled tears from my heart. I was so delighted to survey the diagram the film was executed. Don’t find me infamous, this is a film for all peoples. But it seems to almost be aimed at the Jewish Community. And I contemplate this movie is better than ANY live action film to date. I could literally hear the Words from the Torah in my mind as I watched. The music was too astounding to picture, the voices a special treat, especially Jeff Goldblum as Aaron. This movie may not be historically acccurate, but it is a well rounded narrative that has achieved an extraordinary thing. The Hebrew singing was too grand for me, again, I wanted to yowl because it was so wonderful to contemplate it on the veil, and feel like you are there. L’Chiam, Katzenberg, Dreamworks SKG. Thank you for adding something to the list with The Ten Commandments and Schindler’s List and La Vita E Bella (Life is Aesthetic) . If you have to assume any movie for you or your children, please catch this one. It may be a small violent, but the sheer fact that Dreamworks is not frightened to indicate what it might have been like is something to applaud. The movie is a masterpiece. Notice it, it is a Fresh experience…

So you know he has the skills to pit Mike Mignola’s scarlet anti-hero against an army of fairies and elves, and not produce it humorous. Instead, it’s a spectacular dim fantasy stout of humor, action, quirky appeal, romance, and some truly amazing special effects. But what really shoves this movie over the top is Del Toro’s smart direction, and the glorious performance by Ron Perlman.
Decades ago, Professor Broom (William Injure) told a tiny Hellboy a yuletide bedtime narrative about the Elf King Balor and his unstoppable Golden Army, and how the crown that controls the Army was split into thirds and divided among fairies and humans.

Well, you can’t really interrogate that kind of power to never be revived.
Cut to new day. Hellboy (Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) investigate a outlandish supernatural attack on an auction house, where the archeological curiosity known as the Crown of Bethmoora was being sold — only to be attacked by savage tooth fairies. Turns out the crown was stolen by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a resentful young elf who is sure to hold the world succor from humanity — using, of course, the Golden Army.
And while Hellboy chafes against strict original commander Johann Krauss (a suit filled with ectoplasm), Abe encounters Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala — who also happens to have the last third of the crown. But Nuada will not allow anyone to oppose him as he searches for the Golden Army’s residence, and Hellboy and his friends must venture into a outlandish, aged kingdom to cessation him from destroying all of humanity.
The worst you can say about “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is that it sticks to the formula of the demonic outsider with a sad destiny, and his continuing romantic woes. There’s some retreading as Hellboy realizes anew that he’ll never fit into the world of humans, because he’s vast and red and has horns and a tail. Okay, we got it. Next large psychological pronounce!
Fortunately those flaws are relatively minor ones. Del Toro is serene able to stride a unlit, hooked epic with some truly bizarre creatures (the utterly alien, eye-winged Angel of Death), clockpunk robots, trippy underground goblin markets and a original BPRD agent who is basically ectoplasm in a suit. And for the action scenes, Del Toro does not pull punches when it comes to the smashing action scenes — giant thrashing vines and a one-on-one duel with Nuada are among the highlights.
With all this going on, it would be easy to neglect the characters. But Del Toro packs the script with solid rapid dialogue and some poignantly romantic moments — including some radiant startling actions from dear ol’ Abe. And he also adds microscopic moments to this sage narrative that remind us that these are supposed to be people — such as Hellboy’s bickering with Krauss, or Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and having a exiguous Manilow singalong together. It’s objective so cute.
But what really sets this movie apart is the “children of the Earth.” No flitting Victorian sprites — these are creatures that are irregular, grotesque, hazardous and immensely mighty, from despicable miniature tooth fairies up to substantial rock monsters and plant gods. There’s an alien, bizarre elegant to these creatures that feels wholly precise, as if Neil Gaiman casually dropped a few sketches onto the drawing board.
But as astounding as the visuals are, Del Toro never neglects the characters. Perlman is perfect for the role of “mountainous Red” — he’s gruff, sarcastic, spiteful, but also endearing and self-deprecatingly likable. There are more hints of his potentially sad future, and he faces some delicately-handed temptations. But Titanic Red’s advantageous heart is tranquil very distinguished in the forefront, no matter how grand human beings fright him.
Blair gives a more absorbing performance here as a spunkier Liz, who also has some surprising developments in store. Jones is pitch-perfect as the fish-man, who experiences the first pangs of young cherish for Nuala, while Goss gives a chilling, whispery performance as a rebel prince who is willing to do whatever it takes — even ruin family — if it helps him restore the fey kingdom. Beautiful worthy villain, since he clearly isn’t trying to be unpleasant.
There’s also loads of extras in this particular edition of the movie — feature commentary with director Guillermo Del Toro, Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair and Luke Goss, as well as some deleted scenes also with commentary with Del Toro, a prologue to the movie, a digital script, image gallery, a “Puppet Theatre” for the opening sequences of the film, thought art, interviews, and other such stuff. You know you’re not watching a formulaic amusing book film when one of the highlights is a drunken rendition of “Can’t Smile Without You” by Hellboy and Abe Sapien. “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a more confident, assured outing than the first film and while it does not scheme from Mignola’s comics for its space it is perhaps better off for it, lacking the usual burden of comparison and expectations. “The Golden Army” is more fantastical than the first film and is less sci-fi oriented but this is the sort of thing Del Toro does exceptionally well as a writer. He never lets the fantasy become the focus of the film, instead concentrating on characters and delivering action scenes that can only be described as, forgive the crass immaturity, kickass.
As appealing as many comical book-to-film adaptations are it is a rare event when one can call one of these films a legal artistic achievement. I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that Guillermo Del Toro’s entire career has been leading up to this film, particularly regarding his work as screenwriter here. The comedy feels less forced and is worked incredibly well into the script here, so powerful so that it doesn’t feel remotely unnatural when the scene of laughable drunken singing leads directly without a atomize into one of the film’s most intensely dramatic sequences. Del Toro’s handling of character has never been better, not even with “The Devil’s Backbone”, which is unruffled my common of his films, and his sheer skill and ability when it comes to telling a fairytale-esquire fantasy is amazing, as proved in the prologue to this film. In short this is Del Toro at the top of his game and providing artistry the likes of which we rarely if ever search for in summer blockbusters. It’s only beautiful that an astonishingly colorful laughable like “Hellboy” by an astonishingly intelligent artist like Mike Mignola is adapted this well and by someone as talented at what they do as he is.
How refreshing it is, a week after the release of “Hancock”, which to me epitomizes everything defective with action film-making today, that we gather “The Golden Army” which features hands down some of the finest action scenes we have ever seen in this sort of film. Unbiased stunningly fine, well-shot, well-crafted, the sort of thing that leaves one wondering how great time and anguish went into it and endlessly thankful that some really talented people went to the inconvenience of making the film.
The film is generally honest superior on a technical level. Why am I even saying this? Of course it is. Danny Elfman composing, Guillermo Navarro serving as cinematographer, wonderful editors, amazing special effects wizards. It’s a world-class crew that made this film. I shouldn’t be surprised at its quality but “The Golden Army” really fair floored and astonished me with how wonderful it is. The cast is also generous, proving once again that you don’t need ‘big names’ to carry a movie. Impartial about everyone here is pleasurable, particularly Perlman with another fine turn as Hellboy and the underrated Selma Blair as Liz Sherman.
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” provides essentially everything a Del Toro or Mignola fan would want. I imagine it will entertain and charm many outside those circles as well with its fabulous action sequences, enchanting characters, and extraordinary sense of humor. I would personally go as far as calling “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” one of the top five or so comical book movies ever made.

A big improvement over the last ones![]()
I haven’t been crazy about the past “Prince and Me” movies, partly because the acting was weak and they had corny plotlines. I particularly was disappointed with Prince and Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon, so I wasn’t sure what to expect with the fourth installment in the series.
Fortunately, Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure is far superior to its predecessors. I don’t what changed – the director and main actors are all the same – but it’s an almost entirely different film. In Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure, Edvard, Paige, and Soren go to the Kingdom of Sangyoon to attend a royal wedding. However, en route, they uncover a love affair, lose an elephant, and save a hill tribe. The plot was both action-packed and emotionally engaging – something to satisfy the boys and girls.
Chris Gere (King Edvard) and Kam Heskin (Queen Paige) will never be my favorite actors, but they seem to have really found themselves in this movie. They’re funny, energetic, and confident. Ben Miller as Soren has also morphed from a boring government advisor to a comedic sidekick. He easily had some of the best lines in the movie. The new Asian characters, from Princess Myra to the combative Rayen, are also lively and add to the movie.
The Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure’s production quality is also a lot better. There’s no cheap ski cabins and grainy shots of animals as in Prince and Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon. For the scenes in Sangyoon (which is loosely based on Burma, but mixes several Southeast Asian cultures), the cast and crew actually went to Thailand. The sets for the palace buildings are impressive, considering that they were probably built from scratch. Best of all were the jungle scenes, filmed in rainforests. The movie also has a lot of animals, including elephants and orangutans.*
Even if you were disappointed with the past “Prince & Me” movies, I do suggest you give this one a try. It makes the previous “Prince & Me” movies look amateurish. Highly recommended for families and couples who want to watch a romantic comedy, mixed with a bit of adventure.
* There is a brief scene in the movie when Paige rides an elephant. I wanted to make sure viewers are aware that elephants often go through horrible rituals in order to domesticate them. Therefore, if you go to Asia, you should avoid riding elephants and not support such practices. However, despite the DVD box cover, the elephant-riding scene in Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure is short – only a few seconds – so I guess the movie directors realized they shouldn’t try to promote elephant-riding.

Many people did not like the ninth season of Roseanne, but in its totality, I found it titillating. The main plight was that it was clumsily written and directed, and that is mainly why I am giving it three stars. Let me warn you there are SPOILERS AHEAD.

The season opens with Roseanne having retreated to Jackie’s house after a spacious fight with Dan over lifestyle changes he will have to obtain for the sake of his health. He is in complete denial, and she lashes out in scare of losing him to a second heart attack. She spends the day parked on Jackie’s couch, watching TV and fantasizing about the various sitcom couples that she watched as a child. At the conclusion of the episode, Roseanne and Dan reconcile, Roseanne returns home, and Jackie watches the announcement of the winning situation lottery numbers. Mighty to her surprise, she and Roseanne have won the 108 million dollar Illinois region lottery. This is where the series begins to develop a monotonous turn from the explain you have become accustomed to into something that resembles “Absolutely Extraordinary, Midwest Style”.

With Dan away from home and all the money in the world at her disposal, Roseanne takes the prove on a series of fantasy episodes. First, the slack Jim (“Ernest”) Varney stars as a prince who becomes enamored of Jackie after seeing her on TV and comes to town to woo her, then Jackie and Roseanne enter an expensive, exotic, and very oddball spa where they are subject to all kinds of torments that are supposed to invigorate body and soul, but honest seem wearisome humorous in many ways. The Halloween special makes determined what the audience has suspected all along – that Jackie and Roseanne have morphed into “Absolutely Astonishing”‘ Patsy and Edina, with the exact stars of that note guest starring. Next, the Conners are invited to expend a weekend with the wealthy Wentworths on their Cape Cod estate. Apparently the Wentworths exercise pill-popping and overindulging in alcohol as a means of dealing with their personal problems rather than impartial “letting it out”, and Roseanne is more than gratified to express the family how to release their nettle. Quite frankly, the graceful art of temper tantrums is one thing I’ve always felt the uber-rich had down pat.
Next is an episode so dreadful that it is seldom shown in syndication, and has me asking “What WAS Roseanne thinking? ” Of course I am talking about “Roseambo”. Seriously, this episode is “Ed Wood” unpleasant. The villains in this episode are an ethnically diverse bunch, and yet they all have the same fraudulent accent. There are two advantageous jokes in this episode. The first is when the subservient middle-eastern women whine through a choker and scarf and the subtitles don’t match the mumblings. The second satisfactory joke was when Roseanne was using such weapons as a plot of hot rollers, dispensing with the terrorists one by one, and spouting parodies of action-movie impress lines such as “Avon calling!” after kicking down a door.
This ends the fantasy sequence section of the season, and the rest of the season is relieve in Lanford. The Thanksgiving episode is more oriented around family relationships, and thus there is an up-tick in quality. At Thanksgiving, Bev, Roseanne’s mother, makes a startling revelation about her sexual orientation. It doesn’t gain distinguished sense that Bev, divorced for several years, financially regain, and whose romantic trysts with men have been the subject of several shows in the interim, would arrive to such a self discovery in her 60′s or have been terrorized to admit this fact about herself until this point. I consider it would have been better to concentrate on the other announcement of this episode – that Leon and Scott are planning to adopt – and focus on the hardships and road-blocks that abound when they region off on that road.
Next, in “Home for the Holidays”, Dan returns to be home with the family at Christmas. There are satisfied moments – the Conners finally burn their mortgage – but at the same time, Dan seems uneasy and somewhat distant around Roseanne. At the conclusion of the episode we salvage out why, when Jackie overhears Dan on the phone talking tenderly to “another woman” – the nurse who is taking care of his mother in California. The next three episodes deal with the fallout of Roseanne finding out about the affair, confronting Dan about it, and mourning what seems to be the kill of her marriage when she locks herself in her room and goes on a junk food binge. Although I really enjoyed these episodes as something that any woman who has been dumped for another could record to, I found Dan’s actions to be completely out of character. Perhaps that is the point – maybe Dan stayed by Roseanne’s side through very awful times because he didn’t really have any broader horizons in life, and now that he knows that he has alternatives he is taking them, or at least flirting with them.
After a very mundane two-parter in which Roseanne uses her wealth to back rescue the Wellman Plastics factory that she and her sister worked in during the first season, near two of the season’s best episodes. First, in “A Second Chance”, Dan returns to Roseanne in an attempt to initiate over. The couple’s reunion is chop short when Jackie calls with news that Darlene has gone into early labor. “The Miracle” is one of my all-time popular episodes of Roseanne. All medical intervention possible is frail to cessation Darlene from going into labor, but she does so anyway, and delivers a baby girl that even the medical experts Roseanne has retained say is too premature to survive. The episode shows us two things to which we are unaccustomed – David being strong and Darlene being overtly loving, vulnerable, and selfless. It’s truly mammoth and yet heartbreaking seeing the two being a normal loving couple comforting each other and grieving over the probable loss of their child.
The next three episodes – “Roseanne-Feld”, “The Truth Be Told”, and “Arsenic and Passe Mom” are light-hearted droll romps that are OK but ultimately forgettable. However, the two-part series finale is agreeable. It starts out somewhat monotonous, the premise being that the Connors and their friends are gathering for a celebration as Darlene and David bring their baby home from the hospital. But in the final ten minutes, through Roseanne’s monologue, we learn that what we consider we are seeing and have been seeing for the last seven years is actually a modern written by Roseanne based loosely on the truth. All of the characters do exist, but not as they have been portrayed in the show/novel. We also net out that Roseanne has recently experienced a horrendous personal loss rather than a ample financial windfall. This loss has caused Roseanne to throw herself into finishing her unique in the basement office that her family first status up for her at the conclusion of season two, where she hatches the place lottery storyline as a conclusion to the book she has been working on for seven years. We then seek her execute her fresh, effect it aside, go into the living room that has the same drab furnishings from the previous seasons, and sit down to contemplate TV – alone. It was all very touching.
I guess since I have been hypercritical of more than a few of the individual episodes, some might wonder why I am giving this season a three star rating. I actually did not like this season during its initial speed, but on repeated viewings it has grown on me. Standing all by itself it would truly be unpleasant. You have to ask yourself, though, do you actually fill that people would serene be talking about this demonstrate if it had gone out with a whimper after its eighth season instead of taking the bizarre turn that it did in its ninth and final season? I seriously doubt it. Thus, I do recommend this DVD state to any Roseanne fan, especially if you are familiar with the previous eight seasons. Unprejudiced prepare yourself for more than a few cringe-worthy moments of TV viewing.
I loved “Roseanne” because it was such a amusing and realistic sitcom. There has never been a TV prove that has portrayed such a accurate American family. My family was honest like the Connors and I am determined there were millions of families unprejudiced like this around the country. Why was Roseanne so ghastly? This was the first time an actress had total creative control over her indicate. There wasn’t a man telling Roseanne what to do. She plot her possess rules. Then she broke every one of them!
In my humble belief “Roseanne” peaked in Season 5 (1992/1993 season, when Becky left.) The shows during that season were so on the money because everyone could describe to Roseanne’s problems. I especially loved the expose when Roseanne’s father passed away; it was so droll but also very touching. And the one with Loretta Lynn was so laughable.
It seems like after Season 5 all the eps of “Roseanne” were downhill. There were some pleasant shows after that, but with each passing season “Roseanne” got progressively worse.
Roseanne is as American as Apple Pie, but what’s up with Season 9??? By Season 9 “Roseanne” was ugly. I can’t name a single ep from this season that is halfway edible. They are all so incredibly unfunny, tiresome, dull and rather painful to stare. All the storylines were pointless because by now I (like many die-hard/loyal viewers) lost interest in the show; but I never lost faith in Roseanne.
Besides Rosey and her family, my current character was Nancy. Sandra Bernhard was the perfect actress to play Nancy Bartlett because who else can peruse and sound more trampy than her? Nancy was a kook but she also had a very sweet side to her; this was only revealed if you looked very closely. Unfortunately, Nancy was rarely seen by Season 9, though. I remember reading that Roseanne was wrathful that Sandy discussed one of her failed marriage on a late-night talk exhibit. Maybe Roseanne was punishing Nancy by confining her to the same purgatory that banished Crystal Anderson-Conner from the reveal?
I was never crazy about Leon Karp (Martin Mull) and Scott (Fred Willard.) They were in blueprint too many shows during the last season. Why? No one was eager in these two. And they were such a cliche of what people mediate the typical middle-aged [...] couple is; but they were never even remotely comic. And, I never understood why Roseanne always tried to go out of her to draw to include [...]-themes on her indicate. This prove is based on her hold life. In her personal life Roseanne doesn’t associate with [...] people and she is far from being a [...] icon. She is fair a domestic artist that was able to turn her life into something very humorous and astonishing.
The last episode of “Roseanne” was a special hour-long program. There were a few obedient scenes on the last expose. I liked that Roseanne included all of her supporting cast (not honest the main stars) in the last ep. Because it added a touch of realism and closure. Of course in syndication and on Slit @ Nite these last 2 eps are butchered beyond recognition.

While calling this a ‘Swashbuckler’ collection is misleading (these aren’t the swordfighting, acrobatic adventures synonymous with Fairbanks, Flynn, Lancaster, or even Power, in “The Tag of Zorro”), these are vastly keen films, and Tyrone Power is always a joy of stare!

The oldest of the films, “Blood and Sand”, is the strangest entry of the collection; while the other films are historical epics, this technicolor morality memoir, told in a bullfight saga, was released in pre-WWII 1941. A remake of Rudolph Valentino’s 1922 restful classic, Power is the audacious matador loved by sweet Linda Darnell, but corrupted by sophisticated vixen Rita Hayworth (being groomed for stardom at the time) . The fun of this film isn’t so grand the drama, however, as the beauty of Power and Hayworth, and a astonishing supporting cast, including Anthony Quinn, Laird Cregar, and John Carradine; peep for future ‘Superman’ George Reeves in a little role!
“Son of Fury” (1942) is best-known as the film that helped start Gene Tierney’s career, and the murky swansong of Frances Farmer’s attempted comeback, but it is closer in spirit to “Anthony Adverse” than swashbuckler. Supposedly illegitimate Power is abused by sadistic uncle George Sanders, and flees to the South Seas to derive the wealth to contest his set, falling for island girl Tierney. Don’t miss the climactic fistfight between Power and Sanders; it’s nearly as spectacular as the Wayne/Scott brawl in “The Spoilers”!

The destroy of WWII brought a unusual ‘consciousness’ to historical epics, and Power’s films would be among the best, marred only by some poorly-cast leading ladies. “Captain from Castile” (1947) offered the one exception, sultry Jean Peters; while the conception was similar to “Son of Fury” (hero goes overseas…Mexico, this time…seeking fortune and fame to positive name), the film benefits from breathtaking Technicolor Mexican locations (glimpse for the active volcanoes!), a apt cast, including Cesar Romero (unbelievable as Cortez), and Alfred Newman’s unforgettable get. “Prince of Foxes” (1949), first of two Power teamings with Orson Welles, is one of Hollywood’s first ‘intellectual’ epics; In 16th certury Italy, a pretender (Power), gains the confidence of legendary Cesare Borgia (Welles), who uses Power’s wiles to bag cities in his conception to conquer and unite Italy. Produced in England, on a smaller budget, the film lacks the ‘sweep’ of the other titles, and Power (at 36) is getting a bit outmoded to be playing youths, but it is serene sharp!
For Tyrone Power’s many fans (including me), finally seeing these titles on DVD is a cause to celebrate, and one hopes that more of his film work will soon be available!
With this 5-DVD place, 20th Century Fox is finally doing justice to its big star and ample box office winner for many years, Tyrone Power. Included: Blood and Sand, Son of Fury, The Sunless Rose, The Prince of Foxes, and The Captain from Castile.
Fox has really gone all the method with this one, with the inclusion of postcard-sized lobby cards and four heavenly features, including profitable commentary, isolated scores of Captain from Castile and Prince of Foxes that are Extraordinary, and many other elements. I do not feel that Fox took the cheap device out at all. Through Warner Brothers in the past has had more output than Fox, Warners recently has not given the attention to their DVD sets as Fox has on this Power spot. I have been valuable of Fox in the past for their DVD production, but I reflect they’re trying to create up for it now. It’s a beautifully compiled site.
Three of the films are in color: Blood and Sand, The Sunless Rose, and The Captain from Castile. The color in Blood and Sand is excellent; in fact, there is a commentary by Richard Crudo, Pres. of American Society of Cinematographers who speaks about this film. The split-screen technique shows the beauty of the restoration.
Son of Fury is in dismal and white – there is some light flickering incompatibility but I mediate the characterize looks vast, using a dual-layering process.
The first two reels of Captain From Castile has some color problems but after that it’s comely – and the accumulate is a adore. Earn definite to listen to the isolated gain by Randy Newman that is offered. It’s also an gracious film, with astronomical performances.
Actually I don’t entirely agree with the negative review of the Prince of Foxes quality – it’s not perfect but the dark and white is glorious, and I thoroughly loved watching the film. Again, the pick up is sensational.

There’s a mountainous deal of autobiography in the film. In an interview from those days he notes the silence of the US Catholic hierarchy to the bombing of civilians in Vietnam and opines, “Were US bombers dropping contraceptives on the Vietnamese, the American Catholic hierarchy would have condemned it quickly; but we were dropping napalm, and they said nothing.”
These personal stories are sketched throughout the movie, which begins at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and the speak of aggressive evangelization of non-Christians, especially Jewish students, by evangelical churches in the place and by evangelical faculty, staff and students of the Academy. He interviews Academy graduate Mikey Weinstein, who was disturbed when one of his two sons then at the Academy told him of anti-Jewish slurs he had been subjected to, and of the aggressive promotion of “The Passion of the Christ” by the Academy.
Carroll uses this incident to commence into a discussion of two issues: the history of Christian hostility to Jews, and of the linkage of Christianity with military power. He visits Milvian Bridge outside Rome, and Constantine’s vision of a improper with the motto, “In hoc signo vinces,” becomes the guiding metaphor for the book-”Irascible and sword become one. He travels to Spain, where Jews were first forced to convert to Christianity; then, when Christians became suspicious of the integrity of those they had forcibly converted, the Spanish Inquisition was created to investigate and to punish. When Jews were expelled from Spain, many were welcome in Rome, until 1555, when chief Roman inquisitor Giovanni Cardinal Caraffa became Pope Paul IV, who restricted Jewish intercourse with Christians and created a ghetto in which they must live.
Though unusual popes, especially John Paul II, have taken immense strides to repair relations with Jews, Carroll doesn’t reflect they’ve gone far enough. John Paul denounced Nazi antisemitism, but blamed it on neo-paganism, refusing to retort that another fraction of its foundation was the legacy of Christian anti-Judaism, of accusations of “Christ-killer” and the blood libel. Only this can define the collusion of many Catholic prelates with Nazism. He goes to Trier, where one of the supposed relics brought aid from the Holy Land by Helena, the Robe of Christ, has been kept since the time of Constantine. The Bishop of Trier supported the National Socialists in the election of 1933, and to celebrate their victory, arranged for the Robe to be displayed. Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen represented Hitler, and, with the bishop, sent a telegram to Hitler pledging their mutual cooperation. While it was on exhibit, Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) signed the concordat with Hitler-protecting the institutional church while accepting Nazi rule. Pacelli might not have been “Hitler’s Pope,” says Carroll, but he was certainly “Hitler’s Cardinal.”
That same year Edith Stein wrote to the pope to warn of Nazi antisemitism and of the dim future that would face Europe’s Jews; five years later, now known as Teresa Benedicta of the Heinous, she lamented in her diary that the pope had never bothered to answer … and that all she had predicted had reach lawful. This wasn’t mentioned in her canonization in 1998; she was canonized as a martyr, despite the fact that she went to Auschwitz not because of her Catholic faith, but for her Jewish blood.
In Rome, the anti-Jewish legislation of Paul IV was rescinded when Italy unified and the pope was banished to the Vatican; it was revived by Mussolini, however, and when in 1943 Mussolini rounded up the Jews of Rome to deport to Auschwitz, the pope said nothing. A survivor says in the film, “If the pope had only taken the anxiety to go outside the gate-and not say anything, unprejudiced do as he did when Rome was bombed-just go outside the gate and stand in silence, with his arms raised in the compose of a spoiled, there might never have been a deportation. Italians and German Catholics would not have gone along with it.” But he never appeared.
Carroll affirms the strides taken forward by the Catholic Church in the latter allotment of the 20th century, especially the “change that mattered most” at Vatican 2, the decree, Nostra Aetate. But he wonders how grand it has sunk in. He speaks with Fr. Stanislaw Obirek, a Polish Jesuit, suspended by his order because, Carroll says, he wanted a fuller accounting for the Catholic Church’s role in Polish antisemitism.
Returning to the US, Carroll listens to the rhetoric of George Bush’s “war on panic”-language of “crusade,” “honorable vs. irascible,” “God is not neutral”-and hears echoes of past attempts to fuse dismal and sword That’s what frightens him about what he saw happening at the Air Force Academy; it appears to be a case of religion and military power coming together, with young evangelicals in the military inspired by their religious zeal to fight Middle East enemies. This isn’t the spirit of Jesus, but the spirit of Constantine, which is aloof alive after 1700 years.
The movie can be faulted for its disparagement of Scripture (Carroll accepts uncritically whatever Elaine Pagels tells him), but it remains a considerable testimony to the experiences of those who have been carve by Constantine’s sword.

Frederick Raphael, who also won an Oscar for his work, wrote a epic and script that is the basis of what makes this a riveting film to spy. Every scene makes sense, and every phrase has a purpose; there is not a single word that does not belong, or is unnecessary.

It is wonderfully photographed in a very crisp dismal and white by Ken Higgins, and has an unobtrusive but dazzling fetch by John Dankworth.
Director John Schlesinger brings out the best in even the bit players, and most of all, from Dirk Bogarde, who gives a heartbreaking, shining performance as one of Diana’s stepping stones. Laurence Harvey plays a vain and vile character with the snakelike coldness he is so wonderful at, and of course, Christie is in her prime, and her beauty and talent shine knowing.
Though the atmoshpere of the film is caught in the ’60s, the legend and characters are timeless; this film deserves to be viewed, for its expansive performances, and as a portrait of how times change, but worthy of humanity stays the same, and selfish desires, even when overjoyed, are but clanging brass.
Winner of the 1965 Oscar for Best Actress, the aesthetic and pouty lipped Julie Christie gives a resplendent performance as an amoral cloak girl, Diana Scott, in the swinging ’60s in London.

Diana, who is married, is having an affair with a married television correspondent, Robert Gold, played to perfection by the sexy and world weary, Dirk Bogarde. Eventually, they leave their respective mates and station up house together in swinging London. All is not hunky dory for long, as Julie goes on to have an affair with her agent, Miles, divinely played by Laurence Harvey. When Robert discovers her lies and infidelity, he leaves her.
Diana goes on to party hearty, and she ultimately meets a wealthy and widowed, Italian prince while on dwelling in Italy shooting a commercial. After a perfunctory meeting, she meets up with him again, and he proposes. She thinks about his proposal, and ultimately consents to becoming Princess Diana.
Only after marrying him, a virtual stranger to her, does she realize how lonely she is. She finds herself being left in their palazzo with his seven children, while the prince is away, ostensibly visiting his mother without her. She realizes that she is living in a gilded cage, no more than a trophy wife.
She impulsively contacts Robert and flies to England to meet with him. After they invent care for, she realizes how great she loved him, and declares her feelings for him, only to be rebuffed. He then sends her packing, abet to her empty life in Italy. Yet, he does so at stout emotional cost to himself, as well.
This film is very representative of the swinging sixties and conveys a loyal sense of the joie de vivre of the period. It deals with subjects that were formerly taboo. There are subtle and sly references to homosexuality. Abortion and a woman’s sexuality are issues in the film and dealt with in a intention with which these issues were not ordinarily dealt. While it may seem tame by today’s standards, this was very cutting edge in its time, and reflective of some of the changes which society, as a whole, was undergoing. This movie is definitely an oldie but a goodie.

Over the years, it seems that the Robin Hood saga has been a approved of sorts for film makers to re-invent, manipulate, and showcase again and again. No doubt due to global appeal and the premise of a hero taking from the rich, giving to the abominable, and fighting the excellent fight.
Of all the Robin Hood films ever produced, it’s readily apparent that Prince of Thieves relies less on valid historical accuracy and leans more toward Hollywood flair which aloof makes for an spirited film. Despite using no English accent (which appears to grate on some reviewers for some reason), Kevin Costner presents himself well in the role of Robin Hood. Coupled with dazzling performances from Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, (to name honest a few), the yarn moves at an lively amble and hits the note as a stand up adventure movie that doesn’t disappoint.
As for the modern 2 disc special edition release of this movie, it honest got a whole lot better. Not having to flip the disc over any more to spy the entire feature like in the first release, you now have a recent digital transfer and a remastered DTS 5.1 soundtrack and both are outstanding. On disc 2 you have mountainous bonus material enhancing the value and enjoyment even further. Included is a decent documentary on the making of Prince of Thieves, Bryan Adams performing his music video of ‘(Everything I do) I do it for you’, an interactive mediaeval weapons gallery, cast and crew bios, production notes, interviews with cast and crew, and trailers and t.v. spots.

You don’t really have to be a die-hard Robin Hood fan to bask in this movie. The film has a few flaws and stretches the historical aspect somewhat but it plays out well with plenty of action, adventure, humor, and fun. This special edition release would be a gracious addition to any DVD collection and I recommend it to everyone.
I was at [local store] one day and saw the extended Robin Hood DVD on sale. I decided to rob it. I belief that I liked all the swordplay, action, fantasy tales. I have to shriek you. It was a vast take! It was only [$$] for such a gigantic extended movie.
Plot – Our well-known Robin Hood is in a Jerusalem prison. He escapes with a moor, Azeem (Morgan Freeman), and his friend, Peter. Peter doesn’t perform it, but wants Robin to promise that he will protect his sister, Marion. Robin agrees and finds his map home with Azeem. They leer Robin’s father dumb and their servant blinded. The Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman, who is perfect in the role) killed Robin’s father and is doing foul deeds to the abominable people in the residence. Robin and Azeem raze up in Sherwood Forest and meet its occupants, including John Small and Will Scarlett. They all team up and settle to fight benefit against the Sheriff. (94/100)
Acting – A lot of people despise how Kevin Costner speaks in this movie. I really didn’t examine a change in his instruct at all. So it didn’t really bother me! I idea Kevin did well as Robin. Christian Slater and Alan Rickman were the two who stole the movie. Christian was titanic as the mysterious and confusing Will Scarlett. Alan Rickman was hilarious and atrocious as the Sheriff. They both were broad and should have deserved spacious credit for their positions. Also, there is a short cameo by Sean Connery. (96/100)

Action and Violence – There is a lot of action and violence in this movie. It could have been rated R. There is a lot of swordplay, arrows being fired into faces, fist fights, and blood. I consider any action man would like this movie. Distinguished Action Scenes : Overrun By Celts, Fiery Assault, Cheating The Hangman, Storming The Castle, and Final Duel. To check out these scenes, select the DVD and access them through Scene Selection. (95/100)
Sexual Themes – There are some sexual themes in this myth. There is a scene where Marion is about to be raped from the Sheriff. Also, Robin swims around nude under a waterfall. So there is some sexual mumble. I don’t really mediate it was needed though. (89/100)
The Two Discs and The Extended Version – The extended version is very qualified. It explains a lot more about the Sheriff. There is also some action keep into some places. It is worth the money.
The extended version comes with two discs. Thankfully, you didn’t have to “turn the disc over” to recognize the “whole” movie. So I was overjoyed that I could impartial survey the whole feature film on one disc. The other discs are loaded with extras. There is commentaries, documentaries, making of features, galleries, trailers, and more.

Overall, this movie is very well done. It is very capable and worth the money to choose. Don’t rep the fresh disc. It isn’t worth it! Fair occupy this. It has tons of action, romance, some comedy, pleasing sets and landscapes, and unprejudiced an all around mammoth feel to it.
