The DUKE rides again!star40 tpng Buy Horse Soldiers At Amazon!
A wonderful picture of the war between the states, “Horse Soldiers” follows the story of Wayne leading his troopers in an attack deep into enemy territory. Loosely based on a factual event, the Union must cut off the supply lines to Vicksburg. DUKE leads the raid.

This is a fantastic transfer, as others have mentioned. I spotted literally one damaged frame, with a “V” shaped crease in it. The colors blaze off the screeen, and although there are no booklets, inserts, or extras (other than the original trailer), the disc is a real keeper.

Although many see this picture as “Ford-lite,” there are several classic Ford touches throughout the film. The opening shot of the calvary marching in a sundown silhouette is stirring. The charge of the child soldiers is a great moment (you see Wayne tip his hat to them as he rides off).

For me, I like the subtle, “hidden” Ford touches in all of his films, which reveal telling information about characters without the overbearing, in-your-face, and just plain heavy-handed direction in today’s movies.

In “Horse Soldiers”, the dyed-in-the-wool Southern patriot Hannah Hunter has spent several days as prisoner of the Union soldiers. At one point, in order to make her feel better, a soldier gives her a candle for light. Another offers her a fragment of a looking glass. The soldier holds up the broken mirror, and when she looks at her reflection she can see the soldier’s Yankee cap over the top of it, as if she wore it herself. That’s Ford telling us she’s been converted, without slapping us in the face or dumbing it down for us.

You’ll see familiar Ford faces pop up here and there, too. Jack Pennick is in just about all of John Ford’s westerns. Hank Worden and Ken Curtis will be instantly familiar to fans of “The Searchers”. Ken Curtis was also in “Rio Grande” and “The Quiet Man”, and is probably best known as Festus on “Gunsmoke”.

O.Z. Whitehead was in “The Grapes of Wrath” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. Walter Reed was in “Sergeant Rutledge” and “Cheyenne Autumn”.

Bing Russell, who plays Dunker, is the man gunned down in the saloon in another DUKE movie, “Rio Bravo”.

Of couse, other familiar faces include Storther Martin and Denver Pyle as a pair of Confederate deserters.

This is a really solid cavalry film, with The DUKE in the thick of the action. William Holden is a good match as a foil for DUKE.

For those who say DUKE couldn’t act, DUKE has a great scene in the Newton Station bar when he reveals why he doesn’t like doctors.

“Horse Soldiers” is an overlooked gem from Ford, only because his more famous films shine that much more.

My Favorite John Wayne Moviestar50 tpng Buy Horse Soldiers At Amazon!
I am an unabashed fan of John Wayne movies from “Stagecoach” to “The Shootist.” Among them all, “The Horse Soldiers” is my personal favorite.

John Ford captures, in vivid, robust color, the pageantry of the Union and Confederate cavalries. With flags flying, horses pounding, and bugles blaring, Ford and Wayne create sheer movie entertainment. The musical score by David Buttolph perfectly captures the varying moods of the film and complements the stirring visual images. From “I Left My Love” to the “Bonnie Blue Flag,” the music accents the film’s emotions. William Holden and Constance Towers are well-cast as Wayne’s nemesis. The supporting cast is bolstered with many Wayne regulars, including Ken Curtus (Festus from “Gunsmoke”).

Many criticize the factual inaccuracies in John Wayne films. So what! He didn’t intend to make documentaries, he intended to make rousing, entertaining movies. I will always believe this was his best…

The Civil War according to the Dukestar50 tpng Buy Horse Soldiers At Amazon!
I remember the advertisement to The Horse Soldiers today as if the movie was just being released. Way back in 1960, the newspaper ads and trailer all bragged of the big showdown between the Duke, and costar, William Holden.Unfortunately, even at 10 years old, the big showdown was more of a letdown, but that is the only negative aspect of this fine, actioner picture, which was directed by the great, John Ford. This was the only Ford picture set during the Civil War, and he did a masterful job. The story line was simple,Union Colonel Wayne leads soldiers deep into Rebel territory, and Holden as the liberal Army Doctor, whose beliefs often conflict with the Duke’s. As in many Wayne-Ford pictures, there are many magic little moments in this picture which all combine to a thrilling and heart-stopping conclusion. I firmly recommend the Horse Soldiers, especially on DVD. If you have never seen it in wide-screen format, you are in for a real treat. If you are a John Wayne fan from way back, but have already seen The Horse Soldiers, mount up and join the cavalry ride one more time. And who knows, you may even sing along with them this time.

One of the few CLASSIC WWII in the Pacific Moviesstar50 tpng In Harms Way Review.
It always seems that WWI movies covered the European Theater more, as far as Blockbusters are concerned… “Longest Day”, “Bridge to Far”, “Patton”, “Guns of Navarone”, “Saving Private Ryan”. Sure the Pacific had the multitude of John Wayne Movies, but true epics either dealt with Pearl Harbor or Midway, nothing else existed it seems.

Then I see “In Harms Way” . This movie is a true classic, with a superb cast including Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Dana Andrews, Patricia Neal (may be one of her best), Henry Fonda, Burgess Merredith and many more.

This a “true grit” battle of the Pacific tale which we need more of. Its description of sea battles both before and after are classic, and the movies lenght is not noticed since you are continually involved in it.

Yes, the movie is in black and white, but it seems its supposed to be. The filming and actions sequences for its day are outstanding, and watch you bass speakers or you will lose some china! Seeing this movie on REGULAR TV is not a good idea. They cut more than 20 minutes from it, ruin its continuity, and it is NOT the same movie. networks would rather sell than eep the movie intact.

WATCH THE FULL LENGTH VERSION! Is like seeing a new movie! A give this movie a standing thumbs up. This is one of the Dukes BEST.

A Great War Movie Despite Ho-Hum Special Effectsstar50 tpng In Harms Way Review.
Why do I like this movie so much? It’s an good story with a good cast, an OK love story and … special effects. I like “The Duke”, Partricia Neal and Kirk Douglas, but so? The answer is that I think that “In Harm’s Way” captures the spirit of the American Navy in World War II in a near perfect way; it shows flawed men and women trying to do their best under appalling conditions. It also shows the backstabbing and deceit that occasionally marked the rivalry between some commanders. Some parts drag a bit, but the overall effect, for me, is a movie that I have (and will) watch over and over. Despite its age, it spins a good yarn; the characters are believeable and interesting. Wayne has delivered many fine performances (think “The Quiet Man”, “The Searchers” and John Ford’s cavalry trilogy) and his portrayal of Admiral Rockwell Torrey is one of them. In his committment to the Navy, his growing love for Nurse Maggir Haynes, and his conflict with his son, Wayne is at his top form. Neal, in her post stroke first appearance is equally good. OK, the use of poor models to represent naval ships is off-putting, but it’s the characters and the story that captures the viewer. The DVD is all that could be asked for short of a re-make of the film. It remains one of my favorites.

In Harm’s Way a Winner!star40 tpng In Harms Way Review.
So many movies have been made about the land war in WWII. What about the US Navy? The only ones of any merit were made during the war or in its aftermath and most were unbalanced, showing the Japanese as the “yellow peril,” etc. I was raised on these movies and some of our best directors cranked them out (John Ford and many others) and few stand up well the test of time. Quite by accident I caught up to this fine film on TV and then on this fine double video. The performances by the actors are excellent. John Wayne shows facets of his character that I never saw before, a vulnerabilty rarely seen other than the classic western “The Searchers,” probably his best career performance. Kirk Douglas delivers a great performance of a naval officer with an underlining violence of character, which proves fatal to him. A fine supporting cast headed up by Patricia O’Neil, Burgess Meredith, Tom Tryon and others fills out the story, spread on a broad canvas by Otto Preminger. I was flat out surprised by this excellent work, full of details, character developement, and action. This really is’nt an action picture, with high heroics and flag waving. By subduing these elements, a temptation for any director to boost box office, Preminger achieves effects not seen in most big-budget productions. The story is somewhat slow but rarely boring. The B&W photography posed no problem for me,for most of the war movies I saw as a child were filmed in B&W and it somewhat adds to the documentary look of the movie. Almost all war movies use “stock” footage of ships and battles and this movie is no different. The use of models in the climactic battle is not very convincing; I read that Kirk Douglas said that he liked the movie but seeing all those models with no crewmen standing on deck bothered him, detracked from the power of the film. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is rousing without being bombastic, similar to his great “Patton” score, another movie with some action but has great emphasis on character. I would recommend this to all of John Wayne’s fans. Watch carefully; the Duke is showing some real acting talent here, restrained for an officer named “Rockwell.” With so many epics going for the blood and guts approach, “In Harm’s Way” comes sailing past with a more balanced picture, that the war was harsh, fought by men, lower to upper ranks, but just men of flesh and blood, caught up in the defining event of the twentieth century.

If you’re ever intelligent why people made such a fuss about Steve McQueen check out NEVADA SMITH, Henry Hathaway’s sprawling myth of vengeance and obsession.

McQueen plays young half-Indian/half-white Max Sand, whose parents are murdered by a trio of bandits (Martin Landau, Arthur Kennedy, Karl Malden.) McQueen was 36 years extinct in 1966, the year NEVADA SMITH was made, and was probably a decade past the time when he could effortlessly record a naïve young hero. There’s a brief, disturbingly violent scene at the beginning of the movie where the three villains are torturing Smith’s parents, and the woman portraying McQueen’s Kiowa mother doesn’t peek considerable older than 35. Level-headed, McQueen brings a wide-eyed innocence to his performance that tremendously helps us suspend disbelief. Besides, I occupy I counted exactly zero close-ups in this action western. If you want to check out the crow’s feet around McQueen’s eyes you’ll have to spy hard and mercurial to seek them.

McQueen gets a chance to play against some Hollywood professionals at the top of their games. Brian Keith is growlingly suited as traveling gunsmith Jonas Cord, who plays Polonius to McQueen’s Laertes, and plies the young stranger with instruction and advice. Max Sand won’t be argued out of his mission to avenge the death of his parents, and the pragmatic Cord reluctantly agrees to be his mentor. It’s through Cord and, later, a priest Sand comes across, that the movie is allowed to inquire its central theme – vengeance. Cord argues the practical (“You’ll turn into one of the rats you’re hunting,”) the priest the spiritual. It’s a tribute to the brilliance of McQueen’s performance that by the time we approach the last scene we can contemplate how both arguments have contributed to his maturation. Karl Malden plays the immoral, racist Tom Fitch with sadist gusto. Malden overacts a bit in one of those rare roles that benefits when an actor takes it over the top. Watching the suspicious Fitch examine the no-longer-naïve Max Sand is one of the highlights of the movie.

The underrated Hathaway shot most of NEVADA SMITH on situation, and the realistic explore is outmoded to broad advantage. He doesn’t go for the landmark shots a la John Ford in Monument Valley, choosing instead to play scenes in anonymous swamps and deserts. The realism shoots through all the blueprint to stunts and props and costumes. Instead of elaborately choreographed fist fights with exaggerated sound effects every time a blow is struck, the characters in NEVADA SMITH scratch and claw, bite and kick when they fight. The clothes they wear are torn and dirty and they finish dirty.

NEVADA SMITH has enough going for it to appeal to those who aren’t typically fans of westerns. If you are a fan this is a must-see.

This was a film that never made it on to my radar although I am a fan of westerns and Steve McQueen. Last month, I watched a special on TMC about McQueen and they had a clip from “Nevada Smith”, it looked exciting, so I ordered one from Amazon. The verdict? It is a terrific small film. Henry Hathaway, a skilled director with a long list of impressive credits, did a terrific job telling this Harold Robbins legend and McQueen is tremendous. Loads of amazing character actors and georgeous scenery, artfully recorded adds up to a fun experience. I am delighted I have it in on my shelf.

Its droll how (to me) lines from movies sometimes bubble to the surface of consciousness from out of nowhere. I hadn’t concept about “Alvarez Kelly” in years. Recently, in my minds’s scrutinize, I recalled the image of an eye-patched Confederate leader named Col.Tom Rossiter,(Richard Widmark) silently and solemnly put a question to “Did you please her…..Kelly”? That simple line was so fraught with innuendo and suggestion that it always stuck with me. So on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I popped a widescreen version of “Alvarez Kelly” into my DVD and sat befriend to review and savor this 1966 Civil War oater (or should I say “beefer”)? It was a decent bound. Alvarez Kelly (William Holden) enjoys pursuing the finer things in life, his earthly habits subsidized in piece by trading as a cattle speculator or war profiteer depending upon your point of concept. In this capacity, he has no particular loyalty to the North or the South. However, and as the opening credits point out, all armies in all times require food as well as armaments to prevail. As the Yankees and the Confederates fight for control over Kelly’s 2500 head of cattle, he is unwillingly forced to provide his services to the boys in Gray. This fact in no draw serves to curb his rather prodigious libido, and he continues the shameless pursuit of any woman who has the slightest physical beauty. Released in the mid-Sixties, Bond mania was in beefy swing and I would argue that this film was influenced by and shared some clear similarities in attitude and tone with agent 007. Anyway, enter Liz Pickering (Janice Rule), the blooming but long suffering intended of Rossiter, a physically diminished yet plucky and sterling leader of the Southern cause. Liz is instantly drawn to Kelly’s virility and earthly ways and inevitably, favors are shared. Her rather brief on hide appearance only serves to provide a convienient source of personal friction between Rossiter and Kelly. Inevitably though, the war intrudes and a battle for control of the cattle looms. Kelly, awarded with a battlefield commission takes charge of a desperate area in his contain original procedure. The cinematography of this film is crisp. The strong performances by Holden and Widmark really play off each other well. All in all, this Western is elevated a notch or two above the average because of Edward Dmytryk’s solid direction, an acceptable musical get although they could have lost the hokey song at the beginning, decent photography, favorable character actors, an enthralling premise and manages to speak all this in under two hours. Given contemporary standards, I can’t attend but wonder how Hollywood would handle a randy character like Kelly today.

This is a helpful American Civil War adventure film rotund of bravado and action. William Holden and an one-eyed Richard Widmark turn in credible performances as reluctant partners in a raid for Union cattle. It also features Janice Rule, a foppish Patrick O’Neal and a bawdy Victoria Shaw. There are some friendly skirmish sequences and a space containing some witty dialogue. Some of the plantation sequence is a puny reminiscent of John Ford’s “The Horse Soldiers” also with Holden. It contains an adequate obtain serene by Johnny Green of “Raintree County” distinction and delicate photography by Joseph MacDonald. The stalwart Edward Dmytryk late directed it for pure cinematic enjoyment. The DVD widescreen images are as crisp as ever.
