Star Trek: The New Motion Picture (advanced screening)star50 tpng Star Trek: The Motion Picture The Directors Edition Discount.
I got the DVD about 4 hours ago. The second that I peeled all those security stickers off my DVD box, I popped it open, place the disc in my player, turned up the Dolby Digital, my super sub-woofer… my high density screen, shut down all light sources, put my PowerMac G4 to sleep, turned off my phones, and laid back for what I hoped would be a nice treat.

Paramount should be ashamed of themselves. This edit should be in theaters. This isn’t a minor achievement in quality increase. This is now a great film. I am literally stunned right now.

It isn’t a matter of effects, so much as it is about dynamics of motion… The tightening of scenes…. Little tweaks here and there…. An added scene here, a missing one here… Revealing more about the characters, keeping a character from being less than he should be.

First off, the Visual Effects shots are absolutely superior, while remaining exactly of the same palette as the original film. These new shots add a consistent sense of grandeur that Wise achieved so very well in some scenes, yet not at all in others. Now… Now the film is a sweeping science fiction epic… Man facing the unknown that comes from that place where no man has gone before.

The picture quality was gorgeous… the richness of the colors… Everything just gorgeous. The new sound… DEAR GOD, it was magnificent. The remix was handled to perfection and not bungled like those that were toying with SUPERMAN recently. From beginning to end there is a quality increase in the sound that never once falters to my ears on this great sound system of mine.

I’d like to tell you about the new visual effects shots, but to be honest… I can’t. They are that seamlessly integrated. I’m sure that there were scenes of the Enterprise passing into the great V-GER ship that I had never seen, but they were intercut with old ones so well that all I got was an increased feeling of motion and dynamics of shots. The results were exactly what was needed.

Suddenly this film feels like it belongs in Trumbull and Dykstra’s Filmography. It always was nice… but before it always felt like a travelogue, and not at all threatening and ominous and creepy and moody and scary and mysterious. That’s right, these new shots actually ADD to the ATMOSPHERE.

For the first time in too long, I’m looking at not only real STAR TREK, but frankly… This is Star Trek where it should always be. Smart Science Fiction told by great Narrative Filmmakers and folks of vision…. Not the fumblings of visionless hucksters that have kidnapped the franchise since the death of Roddenberry.

I have yet to venture into the second DVD… The one loaded with deleted scenes, documentaries and the behind the scenes joys… That will be what I do tomorrow. For now I’m in the afterglow of watching perhaps the best STAR TREK movie and dealing with the realization that due to the lack of vision of cowardly executives, this final masterpiece of Robert Wise’s will never be projected upon a Silver Screen as it so needs to be.

22 years in the making, and worth the wait!!!star50 tpng Star Trek: The Motion Picture The Directors Edition Discount.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture was, until now, a classic example of a film which suffered from a rushed post-production. It is well known in ST fandom how the film that was originally hired to do the effects for this movie bascially fell flat on their collective face, leaving Robert Wise and Co. with only a few months to start from scratch on their effects, and a release date that was carved in stone. They went to superhuman effort in order to get everything done by the deadline, and they barely made it. The final effects sequences actually had to be physically spliced into hundreds of copies of the film, right before their delivery to theaters! The fact that the effects were as good as they were is truly miraculous. This is the most cinematic of all the ST movies to date, although The Wrath of Khan comes pretty close. The soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith is one of the GREATEST film scores ever.

Of course, the main feature of this DVD is the fact that Robert Wise got to go back and take his time re-doing the effects scenes that he had to rush through in 1979, and then insert them seamlessly into the scenes shot 20 years ago, and make it all fit. Overall, it works extremely well. Some of my favorite improvements:

(1) The star field effects over the overture theme and opening credits – Sure, the moving star field over SF movies has been done many times since, but Star Trek invented it. The opening wasn’t complete without it. The credits themselves have also been re-worked. The opening credits were one place where the post-production rush in 1979 really showed. It was a nice touch to clean this up.

(2) The scenes on Vulcan – Vulcan looks more “Vulcan-like” now, and the removal of the moon seen previously makes the film conform to previously-established Star Trek canon. Another nice touch that is important for continuity. Also, the Vulcan subtitles have been re-worded just a bit to make it a little less obvious that the Vulcans were really just speaking electronically-distorted English.

(3) The new shots of Starfleet Headquarters – totally awesome improvement to another casualty of the 1979 rush. As much as I loved that shot of the Starfleet Headquarters seal, it was painfully obvious that some missing effects shots were here. Also, the scene between Kirk and Sonak has been re-done to make the landing area seem much larger. Nice echoing to the dialogue.

(4) Insertion of some original-series sound effects, particularly the transporter operation.

(5) The scenes when they flew through the cloud and over V’ger were tightened up a bit. Good editing, these secnes were DEFINITELY too long originally. Thank God, though, they left the Enterprise inspection/flyover alone! This is one scene that was just fine all along, and they wisely didn’t cut it at all.

(6) When you look out the windows of the officer’s lounge, you can now see the warp nacelles. Nice touch.

(7) The scenes of V’ger attacking the Earth. I always wanted to see a shot of the whole thing at once!

(8) The new shots inside V’ger – It’s pretty obvious that these are CG, but the creation of the bridge between the Enterprise and V’ger is pretty cool anyway.

(9) But, the absolute BEST improvement was the re-working of the Red Alert klaxon and the removal of that infuriatingly annoying computer voice. I got so tired of hearing that thing go “Travel pod available, Cargo 6″, and “Intruder Location. A Sonic Shower.”, and “Red. Alert. Red. Alert. The Ship. Is On. Red. Alert!” If they did nothing else to the movie, this alone would make the DVD worth buying. Thank you Mr. Wise!

The DVD also contains a bunch of bonus features, including the original scenes that were edited, the delightfully cheesy movie trailers and TV commercials, and the scenes that were added for the 1983 TV version and then re-dropped. Some of those scenes were kinda nice, but they didn’t really do anything for me. The worst one was the shot of Kirk leaving the Enterprise in pursuit of Spock. You can see the scaffolding on the set! They’re baically non-essential, but it’s nice to have them anyway. The TV commercials are a lot of fun to watch.

This is not the best ST move by any stretch, but it’s MUCH better than its detractors think. If you haven’t seen it in a while, now is the perfect chance to see it again. The acting is great. If the actors seem uneasy at first, that’s because the CHARACTERS are uneasy due to the myraid conflicts that they are undergoing as the movie begins. As the conflicts are resolved, they get more comfortable. It’s truly a great SF movie. Pick it up!

Oh and Emma, if you’re out there, sounds like you got a defective case. Return it and get another copy.

The Human Adventure is Just Beginningstar50 tpng Star Trek: The Motion Picture The Directors Edition Discount.
In December of 1979, when Star Trek The Motion Picture was released, it was apparent to audiences that this was no ordinary “shoot ‘em up” science fiction movie–this was a serious film with complex plotting and “big” ideas. Yet, somehow the whole film seemed “off,” and lacking the TV show’s charm. What was not generally known at the time was that, with the premiere date looming and numerous visual effects sequences not completed–and never having had a test screening–Director Robert Wise basically assembled what he could and physically carried the print to the film’s debut. (The final visual effects sequence was literally cut into individual prints of the film before they were express shipped to theaters.)

It says something for Wise’s ability to work under pressure (he edited Citizen Kane, after all) that, despite mixed reviews, no major critics were able to deduce that they were viewing an unfinished film. It’s also a testament to everyone involved in the project that Star Trek The Motion Picture received Academy Award nominations for Visual Effects and Musical Scoring. Nevertheless, I remember seeing the film as a 12 year old, and hearing my father complain “This movie is so slow moving.” And for 22 years, that has been the general consensus–ambitious plotting, great score, mostly good visual effects, poor pacing, little chemistry between the characters.

For this DVD issue, Paramount has allowed Robert Wise to do what he wanted to do all along: finish his picture. Nearly every scene has been reedited–either radically or merely fine tuned–to bring more drama, better pacing, and more emphasis on the characters. Some of the clunkier bits of dialogue have been excised, along with some unnecessary technobabble. The new editing also gives greater subtext to the story, and hints at why V’Ger’s probe chose to assimilate Lieutenant Ilia rather than, say, Mr. Spock.

The new visual effects shots flesh out the movie, adding visual excitement without drawing attention to themselves. The technicians have even added film grain so that the new shots fit in seamlessly with the originals. The sound mix is livelier also, with use of some of the original series’ sound effects, together with new elements. Jerry Goldsmith’s superb score has been altered to conform with new versions of several scenes, particularly the early exploration of V’Ger. The score has been edited in such a way that it still makes musical, as well as dramatic, sense.

The picture quality is vastly superior to previous VHS issues, and a modest improvement over my widescreen LaserDisc. Colors and flesh tones are more vibrant, and the image seems sharper overall. While the film appears to have been cleaned, radical computer “scrubbing” has not been done, so effects-heavy shots (which were built up element-by-element) show some grain.

This new Director’s Edition is now the definitive version of Star Trek The Motion Picture. Retaining all the grandeur of the original, with none of the ponderousness, this is probably the closest realization of Gene Roddenberry’s humanistic vision for the future. After 22 years, The Motion Picture finally takes its rightful place near the top of the Star Trek film canon.

One of the few CLASSIC WWII in the Pacific Moviesstar50 tpng In Harms Way Review.
It always seems that WWI movies covered the European Theater more, as far as Blockbusters are concerned… “Longest Day”, “Bridge to Far”, “Patton”, “Guns of Navarone”, “Saving Private Ryan”. Sure the Pacific had the multitude of John Wayne Movies, but true epics either dealt with Pearl Harbor or Midway, nothing else existed it seems.

Then I see “In Harms Way” . This movie is a true classic, with a superb cast including Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Dana Andrews, Patricia Neal (may be one of her best), Henry Fonda, Burgess Merredith and many more.

This a “true grit” battle of the Pacific tale which we need more of. Its description of sea battles both before and after are classic, and the movies lenght is not noticed since you are continually involved in it.

Yes, the movie is in black and white, but it seems its supposed to be. The filming and actions sequences for its day are outstanding, and watch you bass speakers or you will lose some china! Seeing this movie on REGULAR TV is not a good idea. They cut more than 20 minutes from it, ruin its continuity, and it is NOT the same movie. networks would rather sell than eep the movie intact.

WATCH THE FULL LENGTH VERSION! Is like seeing a new movie! A give this movie a standing thumbs up. This is one of the Dukes BEST.

A Great War Movie Despite Ho-Hum Special Effectsstar50 tpng In Harms Way Review.
Why do I like this movie so much? It’s an good story with a good cast, an OK love story and … special effects. I like “The Duke”, Partricia Neal and Kirk Douglas, but so? The answer is that I think that “In Harm’s Way” captures the spirit of the American Navy in World War II in a near perfect way; it shows flawed men and women trying to do their best under appalling conditions. It also shows the backstabbing and deceit that occasionally marked the rivalry between some commanders. Some parts drag a bit, but the overall effect, for me, is a movie that I have (and will) watch over and over. Despite its age, it spins a good yarn; the characters are believeable and interesting. Wayne has delivered many fine performances (think “The Quiet Man”, “The Searchers” and John Ford’s cavalry trilogy) and his portrayal of Admiral Rockwell Torrey is one of them. In his committment to the Navy, his growing love for Nurse Maggir Haynes, and his conflict with his son, Wayne is at his top form. Neal, in her post stroke first appearance is equally good. OK, the use of poor models to represent naval ships is off-putting, but it’s the characters and the story that captures the viewer. The DVD is all that could be asked for short of a re-make of the film. It remains one of my favorites.

In Harm’s Way a Winner!star40 tpng In Harms Way Review.
So many movies have been made about the land war in WWII. What about the US Navy? The only ones of any merit were made during the war or in its aftermath and most were unbalanced, showing the Japanese as the “yellow peril,” etc. I was raised on these movies and some of our best directors cranked them out (John Ford and many others) and few stand up well the test of time. Quite by accident I caught up to this fine film on TV and then on this fine double video. The performances by the actors are excellent. John Wayne shows facets of his character that I never saw before, a vulnerabilty rarely seen other than the classic western “The Searchers,” probably his best career performance. Kirk Douglas delivers a great performance of a naval officer with an underlining violence of character, which proves fatal to him. A fine supporting cast headed up by Patricia O’Neil, Burgess Meredith, Tom Tryon and others fills out the story, spread on a broad canvas by Otto Preminger. I was flat out surprised by this excellent work, full of details, character developement, and action. This really is’nt an action picture, with high heroics and flag waving. By subduing these elements, a temptation for any director to boost box office, Preminger achieves effects not seen in most big-budget productions. The story is somewhat slow but rarely boring. The B&W photography posed no problem for me,for most of the war movies I saw as a child were filmed in B&W and it somewhat adds to the documentary look of the movie. Almost all war movies use “stock” footage of ships and battles and this movie is no different. The use of models in the climactic battle is not very convincing; I read that Kirk Douglas said that he liked the movie but seeing all those models with no crewmen standing on deck bothered him, detracked from the power of the film. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is rousing without being bombastic, similar to his great “Patton” score, another movie with some action but has great emphasis on character. I would recommend this to all of John Wayne’s fans. Watch carefully; the Duke is showing some real acting talent here, restrained for an officer named “Rockwell.” With so many epics going for the blood and guts approach, “In Harm’s Way” comes sailing past with a more balanced picture, that the war was harsh, fought by men, lower to upper ranks, but just men of flesh and blood, caught up in the defining event of the twentieth century.

Right around the time of their release a couple years ago, I invested in Image’s series of five 9-Disc box sets that serene every Twilight Zone episode from the current ’59 series. From a collector’s standpoint, this seemed like a vast disappear, as these sets turned out to be powerful more affordable than the previous releases, which were 45 individual volumes. I figured I had the collection and could sit assist and relax. I really enjoyed the sets (my reviews of them can be found here, as a matter of fact) and watched them ritually once I owned them.

In March 2004 when the rumors first hit that definitive season-by-season sets were to hit, I attach my collection on e-bay and received almost all the money I invested in them in return. Yes, as a diehard TZ fan, I aid the definitive releases wholeheartedly. Allotment of being a DVD collector is shining that upgrades are imminent. In fact, this may not be the last time I invest in the series… experts forsee Blu-ray coming into play within the next 5 years and a company like Image with no single film or TV property to their name bigger than The Twilight Zone may someday release these with HD transfers on Blu-ray disc. DVD, like a cheaper version of Laserdiscs, is ten times the collector’s format that VHS ever was.

In short, Image doesn’t question everyone to upgrade. They’re not trying to bleed the same customers dry. But they are making a ton of the diehards and DVD collectors truly satisfied. What hasn’t been mentioned in any of the reviews here yet is THAT THE VIDEO AND AUDIO HAVE GONE THROUGH A RESTORATION PROCESS — they Search For AND SOUND BETTER than they ever have before, whether your first exposure to them was on CBS in the early 60s, in the leisurely 70s (when the re-runs were very favorite), or during the holiday marathons of the 90s and today on the Sci-Fi Channel. Not only that, but included are Rod Serling’s “Next week…” teasers and, for the first time, audio commentaries by major players in the episodes themselves as well as crew members (Martin Landau in “Mr. Denton…”, Earl Holliman in “Where is Everybody? “, and Kevin McCarthy in “Long Live Walter Jameson” immediately spring to mind) . As a TZ diehard, I understanding I’d seen and heard as grand as I’d ever fetch to, but Image has effect together something novel for me to search for forward to. The “audio lecture” Amazon refers to is from Sherwood Oaks College and is split into several parts. There is a spacious deal of discussion regarding “Walking Distance” for instance — and we are able to listen to it while watching the episode at the same time. It runs nearly the entire length of the episode. Dependable treats also include Zicree’s interviews conducted in the slow 70s for the writing of his book with such stars as Burgess Meredith and Anne Francis.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Twilight Zone – Season 1! Click Here

Also — the stale collections tried to theme the episodes on each disc, but this simply didn’t work for me. Too often I’d only want to look one of the episodes on a disc and would have to frequently change out. With this region, we’ll be getting the first season which, in a point that is rarely disputed, is the best of the series:

Where Is Everybody?, One for the Angels, Mr. Denton on Doomsday, Sixteen Millimeter Shrine, Walking Distance, Race Clause, The Lonely, Time Enough at Last, Perchance to Dream, Judgment Night, And When the Sky Was Opened, What You Need, The Four of Us Are Dying, Third from the Sun, I Shot an Arrow into the Air, The Hitch-Hiker, The Fever, The Last Flight, The Purple Testament, Elegy, Mirror Image, The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, A World of Incompatibility, Long Live Walter Jameson, People Are Alike All Over, Execution, The Titanic Gargantuan Wish, A Nice Station to Visit, Nightmare as a Child, A Halt at Willoughby, The Chaser, A Passage for Trumpet, Mr. Bevis, The After Hours, The Remarkable Casey, and A World of His Believe.

So while Image doesn’t ask you to double dip, you gotta feel expedient going intellectual you have that option someday. I don’t believe “corporate greed” factors into the equation as noteworthy as customer examine from fans like myself (as well as the logical necessity) for one of the best shows of all time to have an exhaustive and organized state of releases. Retract care and we’ll leer you in the fifth dimension!

This unusual DVD version of The Twilight Zone 1959 Season One is remastered from the unique camera negatives and the new magnetic soundtracks. It has the best portray quality ever and is a mammoth plot for fans.

This six disc place is packed with some unbelievable extras-

*Audio commentaries by Earl Holliman,Martin Landau,Rod Taylor,Martin Milner,Kevin McCarthy,Ted Post and William Self.

*Vintage audio recollections with Burgess Meredith,Douglas Heyes,Richard L Bare,Buck Houghton,Ann Francis and writer Richard Matheson.

*Rod Serling audio lectures from Sherwood Oaks College.

*Isolated music scores from Bernard Herrman,Jerry Goldsmith and more.

*Rod Serling promos from “next weeks note”.

*The novel unaired pilot from “Where Is Everybody? ” with Rod Serling’s Network pitch.

*Rare Rod Serling blooper.

Some information about the above audio commentaries- Ann Francis starred in the classic 1950′s movie “Forbidden Planet,Kevin McCarthy starred in the recent 1950′s version of “The Thing”,Rod Taylor starred in the classic Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and the 1960 George Pal classic “The Time Machine”.

Martin Landau guest-starred in both the current 1959 and 1985 versions of The Twilight Zone as well as the unique “Mission Impossible” and “Dwelling 1999″.

Writer Richard Matheson also wrote stories for both of the fresh and 1985 Twilight Zone series.

This classic television prove has become allotment of western culture and language. People now the term utilize the term “in the Twilight Zone” for description in newspapers or interviews. It’s starting do-do-do-do theme has now become portion of the culture and is stale to denote something irregular happening. The singing group Manhatten Transfer even had a top ten represent with the title.

One imprint of criticism- this recent version is a fantastic distress for a reveal that is 45 years broken-down,but fans that have bought previous sets could be entitled to ask why this wasn’t done in the first situation, some having spent many hundreds of dollars on the three previous releases. Firstly,we had the “best of” TZ 40 episode dwelling followed by the 4 episode discs sets followed by the Volume 1 through to Vol 5 sets. And now we have this unique station. That is enough to test the patience of any fans and they have every apt to complain at this sort of exploitation.

In a few years,I predict that a unique TZ location in high definition will be released.

So fans,if you want the definitive(we hope) DVD box place on the fresh Twilight Zone, then sell your other copies and remove this.

It is really well done and hopefully fans can hold this for many years to near.

VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (ABC 1964-68) makes an auspicious primetime network debut in heavenly colour for its landmark second season (1965-66) featuring a completely remodeled Seaview, the introduction of the incredible Flying Sub in addition to the series casting of fresh regulars Terry Becker in the role of Chief (CPO) Francis Ethelbert Sharkey and Allan Hunt as Crewman Stuart “Stu” Riley.

The scripts here are invariably on a par with the very best written for the first season (1964-65) similarly encompasing a wide range of storylines innovatively marking early televised references to the term “Cyborg” (in “The Cyborg”) and the advanced scientific plan of genetic engineering (in “The Menfish”) .

The stellar line up of the finest Hollywood celebrity acting talents recruited from the theatrical stage, motion recount cover and television making guest appearances (typically) remains impressively outstanding with the celebrated presences of Victor Buono, Gia Scala, Phillip Pine, Ina Balin, Vincent Gardenia, Brooke Bundy, Regis Toomey, Renzo Cesana, Lloyd Bochner, Susan Flannery, Liam Sullivan, James Anderson, Barbara Bouchet, Richard Loo, Robert F. Richard Basehart and David Hedison dependably give their (by now) passe solid performances especially with the strong legend material that these two series stars have to work with throughout this banner second year making it a satisfactory follow up to the gloriously triumphant first season.

Among the more considerable efforts point to in the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA – SECOND SEASON, VOLUME ONE 3-disc box spot are “Jonah and the Whale,” “Time Bomb,” “…And Five of Us Are Left,” “The Cyborg,” “The Left-Handed Man,” “The Deadliest Game,” “Leviathan,” “The Peacemaker,” “The Restful Saboteurs” and “The Machines Strike Befriend.”

This extrarordinary DVD dwelling will be comprised of the first 13 colour hour long segments from VOYAGE’s second season (1965-66) that includes:

01) “Jonah and the Whale” (19/09/1965)

02) “Time Bomb” (26/09/1965)

03) “…And Five of Us Are Left” (03/10/1965)

04) “The Cyborg” (10/10/1965)

05) “Flee from Venice” (17/10/1965)

06) “The Left-Handed Man” (24/10/1965)

07) “The Deadliest Game” (31/10/1965)

08) “Leviathan” (07/11/1965)

09) “The Peacemaker” (14/11/1965)

10) “The Peaceful Saboteurs” (21/11/1965)

11) “The X Factor” (05/12/1965)

12) “The Machines Strike Wait On” (12/12/1965)

13) “The Monster from Outer Residence” (19/12/1965)

The supplemental bonus material contains 20 minutes of revealing behind-the-scenes Special Effects test film footage some of which was likely earlier previewed in the VOYAGE segment of the 1995 THE FANTASY WORLDS OF IRWIN ALLEN tv documentary special.

An additional treat is that the recent season’s premiere episode “Jonah and the Whale” is endowed with a completely different opening and closing titles theme music smooth by the slack Jerry Goldsmith which was traditional specifically as such for this segment but further effectively employed as evocative background scoring for subsequent episodes of the second year as well.

As with the previous first season volumes one and two DVD sets the video transfers utilized are also similarily taken from the novel vault stored pristine 35mm colour film source elements fully restored and digitally remastered in high definition for optimum represent and sound quality.

For those VOYAGE fans who have been anxiously anticipating these splendidly produced colour presentations from the series’ shatter hit second season this particular DVD collection should indicate to be well worth the wait and a marvellous continuation to the outstanding first season adventures further chronicling the gripping, much underwater exploits (state during the not-too-distant future in the mid to tedious 1970s) of the Earth’s final ample frontier with Admiral Harriman Nelson, Captain Lee Crane and the stalwartly gallant crew of the SSRN Seaview in one of the most accepted and best remembered SF tv shows of the 1960s. Primetime network series television has seldom been done better than it was here.

Those that are enthusiastic in General Douglas MacArthur, and fancy his qualities of courage and fortitude, will accumulate this film fascinating; it is beautifully filmed, with honorable re-creations of the mid 20th century, and the battle scenes are very well done.

The speeches alone are a glory to listen to, bulky of passion for “duty, honor, and country”, and the words are so exquisitely crafted they are like the finest prose.

The film starts and ends in MacArthur’s beloved West Point, on a blustery day, as he speaks to the cadets, and is among the many memorable scenes; others are the landing on Layte, and the signing of Japan’s surrender, on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, which is a wonderful re-staging of the historic event.

Gregory Peck gives a monumental portrayal of MacArthur; it is nuanced and knowing, and from the old-fashioned film clips I have seen of General MacArthur, subtly captures his posture and movement, with his many different pipes. This film is one of Peck’s best, and it’s shaded it did not have more significant acclaim, as I feel it certainly deserved it.

Other terrific performances arrive from Marj Dusay as his wife Jean, Sandy Kenyon as General Jonathan Wainwright, and Ed Flanders as President Truman is quite exceptional; tough, gritty, and angered by MacArthur.

An respectable win by Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography by Mario Tosi complements the well-paced direction by Joseph Sargent. If it has a flaw, I feel the film makes too powerful of the publicity loving aspect of MacArthur’s personality. Yes, he liked to spend the media to his advantage, and most people who obtain history feel the same diagram no doubt…otherwise it is a fairly balanced depiction of one of the gigantic men of the 20th century.

It is arresting to speculate what would have happened had General MacArthur been able to do what he idea was fair, and not the “capitulation” and “contaminated compromise with depraved” he felt he was forced to come by. Perhaps over time millions of lives would have been saved, but I’m distinct many would argue otherwise.

Total running time 130 minutes.

The 1977 film of MacArthur is worth watching for the towering performance of Gregory Peck as General Douglas MacArthur. Peck considered this one of his well-liked roles and fought with the producers over the screenplay and editing of the film — and fought he should have because those very flaws kept this movie from being a grand film.

MacArthur lead a long, dramatic and valorous life during World War I, World War II and the Korean War. As a vain and shiny military genius who believed in his contain destiny, the movie focuses on the decade 1942-1952. The film feels like MacArthur’s greatest hits: the dwelling pieces of Bataan, “I shall return”, his rulership of Japan, the Inchon landing in Korea, “The Customary Soldier” speech before Congress and so forth WITHOUT pulling the various scenes together into a coherent whole. According to Peck, the modern three hour version fleshed out MacArthur more before it was edited down to the 130 tiny commerial version.

Without prior knowledge of MacArthur’s life, the movie would be confusing and lacking in the richness that was MacArthur’s life. As one example, the various military situations are dealt with superfical, briefly and often without maps, so that one does not peep the strategic brilliance of his Pacific campaigns. I highly recommend reading William Manchester’s “MacArthur” before seeing the film.

Should you sight the movie? Yes, even a MacArthur at half race is more enthralling than most movies and Gregory Peck IS MacArthur. He was passed over for an Oscar nomination although that was interpreted at the time as more of a comment on the film itself than upon his acting. It is worth seeing for Peck’s performance in and of itself.
