First off, the narrate and sound quality is fantastic. Warner’s Ultra-Resolution process, which ‘locks’ the three Technicolor strips into precise alignment, provides a clarity and ‘crispness’ to the images that even the 1939 novel print couldn’t finish. You’ll honestly own your TV is picking up HD, whether you’re HD-ready, or not! This carries over to the Dolby Digital-remastered sound, as well. All of the tell-tale mutter and scratchiness of the opening credit title music, peaceful discernable in the last upgrade, is gone, replaced by a richness of tone that will give your home theater a first-rate workout. (Listen to the brass in this sequence, and you’ll gaze what I’m talking about…)
The biggest selling point of this edition is, of course, the two discs of additional features offered, and these are, in general, apt. Beginning with the sterling “Making of a Fable” (narrated by Christopher Plummer), Disc Three offers moving overviews about the film, the fantastic restoration, footage from the 1939 Premiere (and the bittersweet 1961 Civil War Centennial reunion of Selznick, Leigh, and de Havilland), glimpses of Gable and Leigh with dubbed voices for the foreign-language versions, the international Prologue (tacked on to clarify the Civil War to foreign audiences), and a 1940 MGM documentary on the “Extinct South” (directed by Fred Zinneman) memorable today for it’s simplistic concept of the time, and stereotypical portrayal of blacks.

Disc Four is a mixed bag; the long-awaited reminiscences of Olivia de Havilland are more chatty than informative (with the 90-year-old actress more alive to in discussing her wardrobe than on-set tension…although a prank she pulled on Gable is laughable), and the Clark Gable Profile is superficial (A&E’s biography of ‘The King’ is far fine) . Things improve, however, with the insightful, sympathetic TCM biography of Vivien Leigh (hosted by Jessica Lange), and a Amazing portion devoted to brief bios of many of the GWTW supporting cast, narrated, again, by Christopher Plummer (although I wish the filmmakers would have included bios for Ward Bond, Victor Jory, Fred Crane, and George ‘Superman’ Reeves) .
All in all, the GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition isn’t perfect, but offers so distinguished terrific material that it is CERTAINLY the one to possess!
I stale to believe that this Hollywood classic was for everyone. However, after reading nearly 300 reviews of the film, I consider that isn’t upright anymore. This movie is NOT for you IF 1) you believe a movie must be as historically right as a history book, 2) you contemplate a 1939 movie should mediate the values of the 21st century, 3) your attention span is so short that you must only survey movies from 90-120 minutes in length, 4) you can only earn politically accurate films, particularly in terms of racial issues, 5) you are so Stupid as to reflect widescreen movies were made before the 1950s (although to be beautiful, Selznik originally intended to spend a special widescreen process for the so-called “burning of Atlanta” sequence but gave up on the expensive plan), 6) you can only accumulate computerized special effects as they appear in unique films, or 7) your view of huge acting is to be found in slasher or teen films being made these days.

GWTW is NOT a documentary on the Civil War period. It is NOT a history of slavery in America. It is NOT a chronicle of perfect people behaving perfectly at all times.
It IS an adaptation of a recent written by a Southern woman who, as a child, sat and listened to the stories the passe Confederate veterans told about the ancient days before, during, and after THE war. It IS a admire fable, probably about the novelist’s grandmother, which reflects the attitudes left over from that long-ago time.
To criticize this film for so many unrelated issues is funny. It stands on its merits as a masterful film that tells of bittersweet esteem and lost fantasy. That it succeeds so well is a tribute to the actors and filmmakers of over sixty years ago.

one sad ass sequel
The worst movie i have ever seen in my entire life. Laurie and Dr. Loomis have now become mean. The personalities are completely different from the original. I was wishing Michael would kill them so this nightmare of a movie would end. Recommend this one to all your enemies

I totally loved what Rob Zombie did with the Halloween subject the first time out, especially being a massive fan of the original film itself. But this sequel just plain sucked. I found myself laughing out loud at the pitiful acting (“Breathing excercises? BREATHING EXERCISES?!?”), and the needless, excessive gore was just – well – just that: needless and excessive. Was there even a plot to this flick? In the end it just seemed like a back-and-forth marathon of over-acted crying scenes with the girl playing Laurie Strode, then a ridiculously gory murder, then the crying, then a murder, and so on. Skip this. Seriously. “Saw VI” was Gone With the Wind compared to this crap.
Creative liberty…
Well, Rob Zombie basically could do whatever he wanted in this entry, and he did. Yes, there is a lot of gratuitous violence. And yes, his trademark “hillbilly” characters seem to dot the landscape. But, there is something deeply human and raw about this Halloween. No, it won’t be for everyone. Unless you are fond of quizzical cameos, like that of Margot Kidder and Weird Al Yankovic. Zombie is obviously a diehard fan of the horror genre, and it shows. He pulls out all the stops and gives us his version of a Halloween that could never be, but now always will. I don’t think he ruined anything. He merely was given a chance and now shows us a “Halloween” through his creative lens. Nothing right or wrong about it. It simply is. It won’t scare you, nor will it be lauded, but it sticks with you. Like it or not.

I honest wish to briefly comment on the criticism of the lack of a widescreen version. The first widescreen film, The King and I, was released in 1956. Previous to this all films were tubby cover. Peter Pan, released in 1953, and a noble many of the Disney classics are only available in rotund camouflage aspect. This is not the Pan and Scan alteration of an novel Widescreen format. The method this film is presented on the DVD is the current aspect ratio; Nothing has been altered. I have seen this so called criticism leveled against many Hollywood classics such as Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Please, rep off your high horse and finish whinning about how Disney or whatever movie company is ripping you off. None of these films ever had a widescreen version to open with. Do a petite research and you could be announce to relish these classics in the aspect ratio they were orginally presented in. Thats all I wish to say.

I have always had a fascination with this myth. As a kid I remember checking the Disney describe book version out of the library week after week. When I finally got to seek it, I was enthralled. There is objective something magical about the record. It’s partially the coming together of all the boyhood adventures in one space. Mermaids, Indians, and Pirates? What more could any boy want? And, of course, the ability to flee. The “You can hover” sequence over London is one of my all time favorites. The whole movie really is fascinating very well with a record that movies fast from state to spot with lots of humor to hold everyone entertained and heavenly animation of the fanciful Never Land.
This special edition is worth tracking down. The relate (new corpulent frame) is absorbing and the surround sound is very nice. Extras include a documentary on the making of the movie and a promotional theatrical featurette from the recent release. The “audio commentary” is unusual. Hosted by Roy Disney, it consists of selections from interviews of the shriek talent, live action models, animators, and animation historians. While not your usual commentary, it’s though-provoking stuff and well worth a listen. Finally, there’s a like hunt game and DVD storybook for kids.

Repo Man is completely unclassifiable. Silly, sad, biting, thrilling, confusing, action, adventure, it’s all there. Emilio Estevez plays Otto, a “white suburban punk” living in LA’s sprawl, with a nowhere job that he loses in the film’s second scene. When his hippie parents admit they sent his college fund to a TV preacher (We’re sending Bibles to El Salvador!), Otto meets Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a cocaine-driven Repo Man who needs an extra driver. Otto joins the firm and soon learns the Repo Code; Bud’s version (You witness, a Repo Man gets himself INTO tense situations), and the other regulars at Helping Hand Auto section their philosophies too. Light finds Bud’s thought humdrum but is willing to handle shoot-outs when he’s not reading parodies of Scientology (Diuretix), Miller seems completely neuron-fried (The more you drive, the less shining you are), and Oly is along to design a four-pack. (Did you peruse the four experienced Repo Men are named after beers? ) Let’s go accept a drink, kid!
Multiple space strands at first seem unrelated, but bind together closer and tighter as the film moves along. Otto and the other Repo Men are on the lookout for a 1964 Chevy Malibu, with a $25,000 bounty. So are some creepy FBI agents, who stalk and kidnap Otto. And so are Helping Hand’s arch-rivals, who careen into the status whenever things are getting humdrum. The car’s driven by a nuclear physicist in from Los Alamos, who warned a CHP officer not to behold in the trunk (with deadly results) . Otto’s punk friends secure the car while breaking into a pharmaceutical factory, but they’re too humdrum to support it. (These three are some of the dumbest criminals ever shown in film, including Kevin Kline’s Otto in _A Fish Called Wanda_) Otto finds adore, after a fashion, but since this is Reaganesque LA, even his girlfriend has her bear motives. (“Otto! What about our relationship? ” Otto’s respond is a colorful respond to Cary Grant’s last line in Gone with the Wind.)
The film abounds with hilarious throw-away lines, signs, and labels. Several scenes assume station in food stores, and all the food is generically labeled. Multiple viewings are required to come by them all; be obvious to read all the signs in the windows. Even the TV preacher shows up on several television sets. Repo Man takes its structure from Miller’s bizarre rant about the cosmic latticework of interconnectedness, because everything is interconnected, and Miller turns out to be apt about all of it by the destroy. “And flying saucers are… You got it. Time Machines.”

Top it off with a TERRIFIC sound track by Iggy Pop, Dim Flag, The Circle Jerks, and a host of others from the punk scene and this is one of the best movies ever made.
Every decade, there seems to be a movie that defines the angst of the culture and the subculture, the collective feeling that something is inappropriate with the establishment. To call this zeitgeist is misleading; these films don’t judge the spirit of the times as noteworthy as they somehow tap into the opposite – they manage to fabricate an all-around sense of unease about the region of the world. In the 1960s, it was The Graduate and the bombshell scrutinize at the destroy. For the 1990s, Fight Club identified many things unpleasant both with pop culture and those acting in rebellion against it. For the Reagan-saturated 1980s, the distinction falls squarely on Alex Cox’s debut film Repo Man. In one of his first roles, Emilio Estevez plays Otto, a street punk who loses his job and college savings in the same day due to misunderstandings and television preachers. At the waste of his rope financially and mentally, he agrees to get a mercurial 20 bucks by helping experienced repo man Bud (Harry Dean Stanton) . Realizing the potential to perform a kindly living, and an “intense” life in his current job, Otto signs up with the crew and becomes a repo man. Like The Graduate and Fight Club, Repo Man also refuses to supply a stock respond, instead making the audience query instead of spoonfeeding them. Plus, it’s roll-on-the-floor droll, with some of the best oneliners since Contemptible Dull 2 or Terminator 2. Alex Cox made Repo Man while unexcited in film school, and he basically admits it’s limited more than a trumped-up student film. The lack of budget is certain at times, but the killer screenplay and direction more than accomplish up for that little fault. As usual, the movie looks helpful on Anchor Bay’s DVD; the sound and video are as distinct as you can ask for, with a remixed 5.1 audio track to boot. There’s a titanic commentary track with Alex Cox, some castmembers (sadly, no Harry Dean or Emilio), and some crew; it’s a lot like a Kevin Smith commentary, with everyone sitting in one room, having a vast time talking about a huge film. There are no other extras to disclose of, unless you pick the collector’s tin (which does not peruse like the normal Repo Man mask – it looks like a California license plate, with Repo Man on it) . The collector’s tin has the soundtrack on CD and a booklet about the movie with a puny silly in it. Unless you are a major fan or must have the best of the best of the best edition, there’s no need to acquire the more expensive version, but if you want it, you’d better glean it hasty, because at 30,000 copies, it’ll be gone before you know it.
I would definitely check this movie out if you can, and would recommend buying it to anyone who asked.
