Thin Ice describes more than the epic. This is the first of the Jesse Stone movies not based on a Robert Parker fresh, there are differences in characters (I particularly missed Molly) and there’s an edgier feel to it. While there is aloof the fabulous repartee among the members of Paradise’s shrimp PD that is so characteristic of these stories, everyone seems uneasy and Jesse seems more self-destructive than in the past. Nevertheless, the courageous Jesse manages to sidestep Internal Affairs to settle the shooting, ferrets out the truth about the kidnapping, and as the movie ends, is on his arrangement to Do The Suitable Thing. His future in Paradise is in quiz as well as his personal relationships, and I’m contented I read that there is another episode yet unreleased, so maybe the grand issues will be resolved.
Tom Selleck’s fifth installment as Robert Parker’s alcoholic Police Chief, in “Jesse Stone: Thin Ice”, lacks the ironic edginess and humor of the previous films (based, for the first time, on modern material, not a Parker unique), and the presence of Viola Davis as the heart of the miniature Paradise Police Department is sorely missed, but Selleck is terrific, and the film will certainly please his fans!

As always, Stone is in hot water with the Paradise City Council; town revenue is down (as he had fired his department’s biggest ticket-writer), and he refuses to hire a Council member’s son-in-law to enjoy the vacancy; and while in Boston in a borrowed Paradise police car, Stone and his buddy, Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie), are shot, with Stone under an Internal Affairs investigation for firing wait on. More is on his plate, as well; a mother (Camryn Manheim) arrives in town, begging for his succor in finding her long-missing child, and his ex-wife informs him she plans to travel in with her modern boyfriend. Needless to say, Stone is finding solace in the bottle, and verbally sparring with his shrink (William Devane) …but he doggedly searches for answers, despite the threats and suspicion.
The series ‘regulars’ (Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth, as Stone’s fellow Paradise cops, and William Sadler, as a Boston mobster) are unbelievable, as is Leslie Hope, portraying an IA investigator attracted to him…and Joe the Dog (as his mutt, Reggie), shines, as always (the canine is a hell of an actor!) . While the film has shortcomings, the performances are helpful, and Selleck is so natural as Stone, you may forget he was once Thomas Magnum…while the ending may be the darkest of the series, I’m certainly looking forward to the next Stone movie!

The oldest of the films, “Blood and Sand”, is the strangest entry of the collection; while the other films are historical epics, this technicolor morality memoir, told in a bullfight saga, was released in pre-WWII 1941. A remake of Rudolph Valentino’s 1922 restful classic, Power is the audacious matador loved by sweet Linda Darnell, but corrupted by sophisticated vixen Rita Hayworth (being groomed for stardom at the time) . The fun of this film isn’t so grand the drama, however, as the beauty of Power and Hayworth, and a astonishing supporting cast, including Anthony Quinn, Laird Cregar, and John Carradine; peep for future ‘Superman’ George Reeves in a little role!
“Son of Fury” (1942) is best-known as the film that helped start Gene Tierney’s career, and the murky swansong of Frances Farmer’s attempted comeback, but it is closer in spirit to “Anthony Adverse” than swashbuckler. Supposedly illegitimate Power is abused by sadistic uncle George Sanders, and flees to the South Seas to derive the wealth to contest his set, falling for island girl Tierney. Don’t miss the climactic fistfight between Power and Sanders; it’s nearly as spectacular as the Wayne/Scott brawl in “The Spoilers”!

For Tyrone Power’s many fans (including me), finally seeing these titles on DVD is a cause to celebrate, and one hopes that more of his film work will soon be available!
With this 5-DVD place, 20th Century Fox is finally doing justice to its big star and ample box office winner for many years, Tyrone Power. Included: Blood and Sand, Son of Fury, The Sunless Rose, The Prince of Foxes, and The Captain from Castile.
Fox has really gone all the method with this one, with the inclusion of postcard-sized lobby cards and four heavenly features, including profitable commentary, isolated scores of Captain from Castile and Prince of Foxes that are Extraordinary, and many other elements. I do not feel that Fox took the cheap device out at all. Through Warner Brothers in the past has had more output than Fox, Warners recently has not given the attention to their DVD sets as Fox has on this Power spot. I have been valuable of Fox in the past for their DVD production, but I reflect they’re trying to create up for it now. It’s a beautifully compiled site.
Three of the films are in color: Blood and Sand, The Sunless Rose, and The Captain from Castile. The color in Blood and Sand is excellent; in fact, there is a commentary by Richard Crudo, Pres. of American Society of Cinematographers who speaks about this film. The split-screen technique shows the beauty of the restoration.
Son of Fury is in dismal and white – there is some light flickering incompatibility but I mediate the characterize looks vast, using a dual-layering process.
The first two reels of Captain From Castile has some color problems but after that it’s comely – and the accumulate is a adore. Earn definite to listen to the isolated gain by Randy Newman that is offered. It’s also an gracious film, with astronomical performances.

When Peter Pan appears on the windowsill and requires his shadow to be sewn relieve onto this feet, Wendy not only does the sewing but accepts his offer to advance to Never-Land because she too desperately wants to avoid growing up.

This is a blooming visual film, but it is also a film of substance that mines Barrie’s view of the boy who would not grow up for everything it is worth. This “Peter Pan” has a depth greater than every all the other versions we have seen on the silver cover to date. This is a pretty film and even if few will really like it the plan it truly deserves, there is calm the fact that objective coming into contact with it will launch the minds of its viewers to the greater realm of meaning and significance. Besides, there is always the possibility that somewhere down the road as they savor this splendid film again and again, that eventually they will devour what it is all about.
This live-action version of Peter Pan stars Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook and Jeremy Sumpter as Peter. The fable begins in London, where motherless Peter has approach to listen to stories told by young Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) . All the characters you remember from your childhood are here: The ticking crocodile (computer-animated and scary), the fiesty Indian Princess, laughable Pirate Smee, spunky Tinkerbelle, and even Nana, the dog-nanny. The film is photographed almost entirely in shadowy, short-tempered lighting to heighten the feeling of magic and peril. Jason Isaacs hams it up objective legal as the dashing and deplorable Captain Hook and he is grand as the alarmed clerk, Mr. Darling. Jeremy Sumpter looks fair like Peter should ogle – delicate, cocky, and fun-loving.
Definitely darker and more despicable than the ancient Disney version, this film has a lot to offer adults: It is visually radiant and reminds us about the innocence and fun of childhood. It’s an inspiring movie that will save a smile on your face and perhaps a few wistful tears in your notice.

The Unrated Versions
Here are the unrated versions of all of the Riddick tales. We get Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, a short animated film. But will all of the movies and all of the extras, we are still missing the half-hour promotion feature where we see Riddick’s past. Originally he was a government assassin who was trained a bit too well. When the government was done with him they tried to eliminate him. Riddick survived and trumped up charges were invented sending him on the run. But that original story is missing from this collection.
Pitch Black. Riddick is one of a handful of survivors who crash on a bright and arid world. But once in a while, the three suns are completely blocked and true darkness covers the land. It is in this darkness that the remaining life on the planet comes out of hiding and goes hunting. Riddick must fight the dark, hold tr group together, and somehow escape the planet.
Dark Fury. Having escaped at the end of the first movie, Riddick and company are picked up by a bounty hunter who has a different idea of what to do with dangerous men. Now Riddick is faced with killers, monsters, and a captain who seems to worship the skill of killing and survival. This film is short and animated but uses the voices of actors from the other movies.
The Chronicles of Riddick. Here old acquaintances try to enlist Riddick’s help in stopping a force known as the Necromongers. It is their sworn duty to purge the flawed life of our universe so that they can be born in perfection in the underverse. This time Riddick is faced with his past, unstoppable armies, weapons of mass destruction and possibly the fate of the whole world.
A nice collection of some interesting films. Packed in a nice small package this is not just a bundle but an original collection. Plenty of action and tough guys for any appetite. I’m a huge sci-fi fan and was interested in the Riddick movies upon seeing them. I told myself that I wouldn’t buy any of them unless they came out all together in a box set. Well, here it is for $14 (WalMart) I couldn’t go wrong. All three movies on two discs. If you’re hardcore about these movies you might want to stick with the original single DVDs because I think they have DTS and animated menus. The Pitch Black movie on this collection didn’t even have scene select, but the chapter button did work, so you can skip during the movie, you just can’t select a spot ahead of time.
Anyway, Pitch Black and TCOR are Unrated, but I didn’t really notice too much in the 3 extra minutes of Pitch Black. I noticed some, but nothing really substantial that changes the movie’s overall tone at all. I was satisfied with The Tremors Attack Pack Franchise Collection even if it was a little condensed in some areas, so naturally I was pleased with this collection and its price. I recommend this series to all sci-fi fans looking for a good old fashioned epic series.

Having already owned the three Riddick films on dvd, I stumbled upon this collection and discovered that it contained all three films in a nifty bundle. So instead of having all three films in separate dvd cases, you get them all in one with this here. I went ahead & purchased this and sold the three separate Riddick films that I had prior. Afterall, what have I got to lose?
Granted there are some missing effects from the menu screens (noticeably on COR) the movies themselves are all kept intact in high quality as seen in their originals (which is excellent), along with the full director’s cut versions of both PB and CoR. Some may be wondering why PB & Dark Fury are on the same disc this time around. Well for one, Dark Fury’s a short enough movie to fit onto the same disc as PB without sacrificing much of anything, it’s actually better this way. Now you won’t have to switch inbetween disc to watch (granted you already owned both PB & DF prior, if not, please excuse this). Afterall, PB and DF interlace with each other. It would only make sense for them both to be on the same disc. You definitely get alot for this collection’s small retail price. You’re getting three films which could run you at $30.00+, for under twenty bucks. 400+ minutes of nonstop sci-fi action.
All in all, to those of whom already own all three films, there really isn’t anything new here to see with the exception of the gnarly dvd packaging, along with the films being in a single dvd case on two discs (no new features that weren’t already found in the originals) as opposed to three. However, to those who don’t already own the Riddick films (or to those who simply owned the prior films on vhs), now’s your chance to PICK THIS UP! The price alone justifies the purchase, and this collection serves as a great intermission into the Riddick universe.

Season Four of Monk was the best season yet. Tony Shaloub proved that he is amusing in any location (as Monk) . The season also dealt with the other main characters in a more in depth plot, giving Ted Levine, and Jason Gray-Stanford, a chance to point to us more about their characters lives. The Captain’s Marriage, and Mr. Monk Goes To The Dentist, gave us a different thought or aspect, if you will, of both of them. I especially liked Jason Gray-Stanford’s debut as a so called rock singer (very amusing) . My whole family has been watching Monk from the beginning, and we care for this reveal!!!

“So Proudly We Hail”, often comes in for more than it’s gorgeous part of criticism over it’s depiction of the splendid work carried out by nurses in the South Pacific during World War Two. Mention is made of the nurses looking like they have impartial stepped out of the beauty parlour with makeup and hair all looking perfect. I’m always mystified by that reaction as I feel this production goes a long blueprint towards depicting the wait on breaking and often extremely unsafe work that nurses carried out during the war in the Pacific. The film was made with the very best of intentions at a time when the outcome of the war was tranquil far from clear. Criticism has also been leveled at the propaganda inherent in parts of the script. Once again one has to plan this film in it’s time and station and if it motivated people to feel patriotic about their country in time of war and at least partly informed the movie going public about some of the work of wartime nurses then that is a job well done in my concept.
“So Proudly We Hail”, traces the stories of 9 nurses from the time they leave San Francisco through the trials and tribulations of their service with the armed services in the South Pacific. Three in particular are focused on, team leader Lt. Janet Davidson (Claudette Colbert), vivacious Lt. Joan O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) and inwardly tormented Lt. Olivia D’Arcy ) Veronica Lake) . Their stories are interwoven through the loyal life action of the group first being sent to Hawaii and then after a torpedo raid which sinks some of their companion vessels, being removed to the Bataan and Correigador regions where they care for and then assist evacuate the military and civilian wounded. The saga ends with the remains of their party being evacuated after mighty loss and suffering to Australia before embarking for home at the destroy of their tour of duty. The women experience all the deprivations of war and personal loss along the diagram as Lt. Davidson falls in fancy with Lt. John Summers (George Reeves) only to live in daily anxiety of him being killed while aloof having a job to do as the team’s main source of strength. Lt. O’Doul (Paulette Goddard) experiences similiar feelings for “Kansas” (Sonny Tufts), the gangly soldier who wins her heart and in the most tragic site Lt. D’Arcy who confronts old-fashioned demons and the loss of her fiance at the hands of the Japanese. Many ghastly incidents darken the daily grind of the nurses work such as regular bombing of their medical camp by the enemy and having to experience all the injure and suffering of wartime casualties and death of loved ones. Each woman is touched in some draw by her involvement in the action and emerges the better for her experience. We discover the women work under not only uncertain conditions but in those that would test the sanity of the strongest person with daily shortages of supplies, shelter and food a constant feature in the daily work.
The film places huge emphasis on the inner strength of the individual under fire whether it be soldier, nurse or wounded civilian. In this respect the film could never be judged superficial as many precise life elements of this period are tied into the account. Grand scenes abound in “So Proudly We Hail”, a standout is the scene during the evacuation of the camp when the nurses are stranded in one of the huts under fire and the trusty life treatment of war nurses in Nanking is mentioned as a telling reminder of the brutality of war. Lt. D’Arcy’s ultimate self sacrifice for the edifying of the group mild is a scene that packs a exact punch with it’s graphic depiction of a suicide killing of enemy soldiers. All three lead actresses are standouts in their maintain recent plot. Claudette Colbert delivers yet another great and totally convincing performance as the leader of the group. Long associated with extremely glamourous roles here she portrays a character forced under unpleasant conditions to peaceful be strong for the sake of her nurses. Paulette Goddard in an Academy Award nominated performance is great as the flighty mantrap with only men on her mind who develops into a responsible and dedicated nurse as her wartime experiences deepen her character. Veronica Lake also minus her o usual glamourous persona is effective in her role as the bitter nurse who is out to punish all Japanese because of the loss she has suffered. Despite the reported tension between Claudette Colbert and Paulette Goddard during filming none of that shows on veil as the main three actresses work very effectively together as the one team. One last standout in the cast is actress Mary Servoss who plays Capt. “Ma” McGregor the lead of the camp and in ultimate charge of all nursing staff. Her lovely scene where she faces the death of her wounded son is a stunner and the emotional highlight of the whole film.

Passed off as Hollywood’s removed belief of what war is like, “So Proudly We Hail”, offers considerable more than that and contrary to current opinion in a number of scenes where appropriate, the women do note what the wear and toddle of war work does to the individuals. Claudette Colbert plays Janet Davidson. An unique choice for a nurse, Colbert eschews most of her usual glamor (except for the San Francisco embarkation) and really gives herself to the fragment. Colbert is often excellent when she has to play against strong women, and here Sandrich surrounds her with a gallery of independent types, the intention Francois Ozon made Catherine Deneueve shine in the modern 8 1/2 WOMEN. Often seen as soignee and entertaining, with that cute fringe of hair playing peekaboo with her eyes, Lake here is going for a Cornell Woolrich-style vengeance against the Japanese. If Tarantino had made Destroy BILL in the 1940s Lake would have beat Uma Thurman in the role easily. She’s hotter than a pistol and she’s Ms. 45.

Paulette Goddard has, I believe, the most tantalizing role and I agree with other reviewers who say this is Goddard’s best fraction. While Colbert and Lake really honest maintain the same acting region throughout the movie, Goddard’s character has to change, so that viewers contemplate her conventional from a soar by night flapper with only men on her mind, to a woman with a heart who lives to assist others, not unbiased sign them with her oomph. It’s harder than it looks to straggle that line, but Goddard pulls it off without a whimper. Often cast as the sexpot pure and simple, or the gold-digging mantrap she apparently was in sincere life, Goddard is entirely persuasive in her role, and like Lake, she’s a natural at action scenes. I want her to be my nurse. Her romance with “Kansas” is kind of cute too.
All in all, an underrated movie with the kind of place that screws in deeper and deeper, unbearably tight, like DAS BOOT, except situation in the Pacific.
