After considerable hunting I found this DVD in the US… I wasn’t positive what to demand from a live action Discworld movie, I unprejudiced couldn’t imagine that the humor could translate properly. In the extinguish, it did and it didn’t.

A short Summary:
In the fantasy world of Discworld, their winter festival is called Hogswatch, which is ruled over by the Hogfather… a stout jolly man with tusks who doles out gifts to nice miniature children. An Assassin is hired to “occupy care of” the Hogfather, and he goes about it by invading the lair of the Toothfairy. To try to retain the world in order, Death puts on the Hogfather Costume and tries to sub in for the evening… meanwhile, Death’s grandaughter, Susan is off to figure out what happened to the Hogfather.

If you have read the book, then you know that you probably laughed so hard you cried. Though the movie is silly, it is not nearly so as the book. They remain fairly faithful to the book, cutting only where significant. But if you have not read the book… then you will gape this film in puzzlement. There is a enormous deal of assumption by the filmmakers that the viewer is already aware of Discworld and how it works. The opening shot of Huge A’tuin with the four elephants is shown but never explained. The Unseen university is baffling if you don’t already know about the wizards, and the Death of Rats makes no sense at all.
But if you HAVE read the book, you will be able to follow quite happily seeing the characters from your head pop into life.
The acting, though theatrical, is astonishing. The costuming is bright and the sets are unusual and magnificent. Susan is a distinguished yet likeable character. Death, though his mouth never moves, is one of the most human creatures in the film. Albert is a sob… you can’t succor but treasure him.
Final summary: If you have read and enjoyed the book, this film is a must-see. If you have not read the book, then you might savor the movie… but you won’t “earn” most of it because of the level of discworld knowledge you are assumed to already have.
Kiddie Rating – I will probably let my kids eye this (ages 6 and 10) there are a few murders but very petite blood, and they are not overly graphic. I didn’t collect any profanity on my first leer through, there is of course no nudity. I would be more concerned of their lack of interest because I’m not positive if they are ragged enough to comprehend the humor of Death delivering presents dressed as a jolly stout man.
While awaiting the release of the Hogfather movie on DVD, I was amazed to speed across the movie on the ION cable TV network on 12/23/07. I too query that for those not familiar with the Discworld, it may be a slight mystifying, but for those of us that are, the dinky details were astounding. I particularly liked the rendition of HEX, complete with the “Anthill Inside” sticker and the runt hourglass which popped out when it was processing. Getting a sight at genuine actors in costume playing Constable Visit and Nobby Nobbs, however briefly, was a treat–in fact, all the costuming and casting was very reminiscent of the intention the Discworld is pictured in the Paul Kidby illustrations. The rendition of Susan and Bilious the Oh God inside the child’s painting on their plot to the Tooth Fairy’s domain was marvelous and very mighty as I had imagined it. Finally, Terry Pratchett himself makes a cameo appearance as the proprietor of the toy store where Death purchases the wooden horse to give to the young Albert. This movie really gives me hope for the “Light Fantastic/Color of Magic” movie which I understand is in the works–it shows that the Discworld CAN be translated to the live veil. My only negative criticism is that every time Mr. Teatime spoke with that strange express of his, I was reminded of the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live–it may be that the actor objective didn’t understand how this would sound to an American ear. However, all in all it was a really grand peril and no Discworld fan should pass it by.

Movie Title: Don’t Say a Word Don’t Say a Word is available for streaming or downloading. |
Don’t Say A World is like spending the night with an ex-High School girlfriend. You’ll find what you were looking for and you probably won’t despise yourself in the morning. This isn’t a mountainous film. Its debatable whether its really even a righteous film but its does what it does effectively. Michael Douglas is a psychyatrist whose daughter is kidnapped by criminal Sean Bean. Seems that Douglas’ patient, Brittany Murphy, has a number in her head that Bean desperately wants and if Douglas doesn’t acquire Murphy to divulge that number, then Bean will raze Douglas’ daughter. Plot-wise, this elegant mighty by the numbers and there aren’t a whole lot of surprises. Its predictable entertainment but, and I don’t mean this to be insulting at all, people who luxuriate in thrillers where the beneficial guys are unquestionably proper and the unpleasant guys are, without a doubt, foul will probably relish this. Those who query shades of gray in their plots will want to go stare Memento again. Again, I don’t mean that to be a condemnation of this film or any of the many people who enjoyed it. Sometimes you’re in the mood for a Memento and sometimes you’re in the mood for a Don’t Say A Word and when I saw this film, I was more in the mood for a Memento. However, all that said, Don’t Say A Word pushes its buttons with an unmistakable skill. Douglas and Bean are ravishing considerable playing the characters they always seem to play but they’re both salubrious enough actors with enough cloak presence that its not as annoying as watching Sylvester Stallone sleepwalk through some of his lesser, non-Rambo action films. As well, Brittany Murphy is a astounding actress even if her character annoyed me. To an extent, she’s going through the same paces as in Girl, Interrupted but, like Douglas and Bean, she does it well. Gary Felder’s a agreeable director and keeps the predictable myth from dragging. If you’re looking for a chance to unbiased chill out for two hours and perceive some poor guys rep what’s coming to them (and, let’s be just, after everything that’s happened over the past month — who isn’t? ), this film might be for you. If its not, well, at least you didn’t pay money for Pearl Harbor again.
When his career stagnated in the behind 80′s after his Oscar regain for WALL STREET, Michael Douglas reinvented himself as an actor as the poet of middle old-fashioned paranoia. From BASIC INSTINCT to FALLING DOWN to WAR OF THE ROSES to DISCLOSURE to THE GAME, no one other than Alfred Hitchcock (though Hitchcock did it from gradual the camera) has made more of a career by cataloging on celluloid the litany of fears (both rational and irrational) that plague the psyche of the middle-aged American male–sex, drugs, violence, and career as destructive forces forever chipping away at the family and at the self.
Viewed in this light, it is understandable why Douglas took this role. It carries forward many of the actor’s accepted themes–alienation, the threatened family, justified paranoia. That being said though, this is not among Douglas’s best work. His performance is once again admirable, but the direction is ho-hum, and while it starts off with originality and promise, it falls advance the kill wait on into the same traditional action and suspense movie cliches, and at times it is detectable that a script doctor was brought in to rewrite definite scenes. The result is a modestly though-provoking thriller that makes for an OK Saturday night, but isn’t likely to obtain Michael Douglas an invite to Oscar night.

Movie Title: Walk on the Wild Side Walk on the Wild Side is available for streaming or downloading. |
Last evening, I skipped the obsolete televised holiday fare and watched Edward Dmytryk’s “Poke On The Wild Side” (Columbia Pictures, 1962) . Let’s impartial say that the next time you’re having friends over for melba toast and you’re looking for the perfect over-the-top extravaganza to project on to the living room wall, this should be the featured attraction. Barbara Stanwyck is the lesbian owner of a Novel Orleans brothel known as “The Doll House.” Glamorous Capucine (a 60′s version of Garbo) is the most approved call girl since Holly Golightly and coveted by both her butch madame and a drifter named Dove (not kidding) played by the inscrutable Laurence Harvey. Add a youthful Jane Fonda (in her bulimic period) and a miscast Anne Baxter as a Mexican diner owner (cascading unlit wig, inauthentic accent and all) and you’ve got one mesmerically provocative flick. Oh, did I forget to mention that the entire thing kicks off with a title sequence in which two felines (one shadowy, one white) seize in a vicious catfight punctuated by Elmer Bernstein’s pulsating jazz gather? Meow! They certain as hell don’t accomplish e’m like this anymore! – Stamp Griffin (“Genre” Magazine)
Elmer Bernstein’s graceful Jazz theme and Saul Bass’ sensuously lyric opening credits state the tone for this legend of Dove Linkhorn and his search for his lost savor Hallie Gerard through the tough underbelly of 1930′s Fresh Orleans. These opening shots of a wait on cat prowling through an alley are justifiably considered one of the best credit sequences ever filmed. Cinematically sublime and well worth the viewing.

What follows is a high melodrama space in a brothel called the Doll House, where Dove, Hallie, Kitty and Madame Jo Courtney meet their various tragic ends. As directed by once gloomy listed director Edward Dmytryk “Trip on the Wild Side” is a full-blown ragged style drama that is chock plump of finely tuned musty style performances.
Cast against character Laurence Harvey as Dove tackles his roll as a treasure sick Texas cowboy with more than his usual cold advance. He manages a plausible Texas accent and turns Dove into a man of fire and misguided passion. He makes it believable that he is the kind of guy that the women he meets with the exception of Barbara Stanwyck get it hard to resist. This is no mean feat for the thin aristocratic British actor.

French beauty Capucine seems almost too refined at first to play Hallie the artistic and wounded object of Dove’s affection. But as the film progresses she delivers honest the true blend of tragedy and pathos of a girl lost in the world of prostitution.
The accomplished Anne Baxter makes her presence known as Teresina Vidaverri the Mexican café owner who helps Dove and along the draw also falls for him. Miscast in an age when Hollywood had most major roles of Latinos played by non-Latinos she is tough, tender and manages to be believable in the role.
Jane Fonda appears as the spurned unpleasant girl Kitty. She walks the wild side with abandon and shows her range as an actress in this, one of her early rolls. Sexy, slinky and utterly gross her Kitty is pure fun as in her desperation for Dove’s affections carries the turn of events for him and Hallie to damnation and loss.
When Barbara Stanwyck comes on the camouflage she steals the record out from under all concerned as Jo the lesbian Madame who looses her icy over her unrequited passion for Hallie. It is a classic Stanwyck performance elephantine of all the power and history of this tremendous American star. In her speech to Hallie about what esteem is she shines as she reveals her enjoy tragic past. This was the first American film to prove a lesbian on the hide and Stanwyck presents us with a staunch woman chunky of strengths and flaws that is worthy more than one would ask from a happy character in mainstream Hollywood of 1962.
Joseph MacDonald captures all the heat and steam of Novel Orleans with his quick-witted gloomy and white cinematography. The out of time early 60′s costumes by Charles La Maire are aesthetic in their range from rags to high class call girl glamour. Bernstein’s astounding procure is one of his best and adds the apt touch of jazzy glitz to the drama.
“Trot on the Wild Side” is one hell of a streak and well worth the admission stamp to the Doll House.

Movie Title: Nick Knight Nick Knight is available for streaming or downloading. |
In the 1989 TV flick Cleave KNIGHT, rocker (1981′s Grammy-winning “Jessie’s Girl”) and soap-opera star (GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1981-1983) Rick Springfield portrays Prick Knight, a homicide detective on the night shift who has a reputation for being a loner and a maverick. But he’s a splendid cop, and he’s hip. He drives a frosty vintage Caddy, looks grand in shadowy leather, and has a soft dwelling in his heart for the homeless (he often checks up on them when he’s out on his “beat”) . Oh, yeah–and he’s also a guilt-ridden vampire in quest of a cure for his supernatural malady. Solving crimes, specifically homicides, is sort of his arrangement of paying penance for the murderous, blood-sucking sins of his past.
Though often neglected or overlooked, Cleave KNIGHT is an radiant, skillfully written, and well-acted TV film that was actually the fresh pilot for the celebrated cult TV series FOREVER KNIGHT (1992-1996) . One reason that this film is nearly forgotten might be the fact that the same chronicle was re-shot with the TV cast and subsequently aired as the series’ two-part opener. While the cast of the series does a aesthetic job-the proper cast is, of course, one of many reasons that the note rapid became a cult favorite–NICK KNIGHT is in many ways generous to the two-part remake, and it is therefore sorrowful that the series has eclipsed the novel film and pushed it into arrive obscurity.
The acting in Slash KNIGHT is generous, especially considering that it is a made-for-TV flick. In the titular role, Springfield delivers a strong, convincing performance and has large chemistry with the rest of the cast. Also inviting is Laura Johnson, who plays museum curator Alyce Hunter and Knight’s appreciate interest. Not only is she a friendly actress and quite glowing, but Ms. Johnson and Springfield really sizzle together when they section shroud time. Genre fans might witness Michael Nader from his role as Nicolas Pike in TV’s short-lived 1990 series THE FLASH, but couch potatoes are more likely to contemplate him from his long-standing role as Farnsworth Dexter on TV’s nighttime soap DYNASTY. Here he plays Nick’s longtime nemesis, Lacroix. (Nader does a wonderful job in the role, though he is admittedly not as compelling–nor as accomplished an actor–as Nigel Bennett, who assumes the role in the series.) As the film’s comical relief, John Kapelos is hilariously tantalizing in the role of Nick’s annoyingly self-absorbed partner Don Schanke, and he often steals the scenes he is in. Interestingly, Kapelos is the only actor in the film who returns to reprise his role for the TV series.

The film itself has really stood up well over time. Aside from the 1980′s pop tunes in the soundtrack and a few cheesy special FX, there isn’t noteworthy that reveals Chop KNIGHT to be a product of late-1980s TV. The script is tight and intelligent, the characters are likable and realistic, the directing is splendid, and, as mentioned before, the acting is worthy. All in all, the film is a forgotten gem that, like its vampire characters, deserves to rise from the dreary and live forever.
And thanks to the folks at Anchor Bay, Carve KNIGHT has been resurrected on DVD. Right, he offering is a bare-bones disc–i.e., there are no extras or bonus features–but the digital transfer is drastically better than the previous VHS releases of the film, and the sound quality is elegant great. And being a telefilm, it is presented in its modern aspect ratio of 1.33:1.
For fans of the TV prove FOREVER KNIGHT who did not witness this pilot film prior to the creation of the series, it might consume a limited time to warm up to the alternate actors and the character variations. But if viewed an commence mind, any fan of the TV series should appreciate Chop KNIGHT, and any fan of the vampire genre will want to add the DVD of this marvelous film to their collections.

Definitely worth amazon.com’s reasonable notice of admission.
I remember watching this when it premiered on television. Network television was going through one of its periodic obsessions with police procedural shows and the introduction of a vampire to the night shift of a metropolitan police force had a distinct amount of appeal.
The exhibit that finally ran (Forever Knight) was quite a bit different and therein lies some of the appeal of watching this movie– the chance to compare and dissimilarity. I had impartial recently bought the first season of Forever Knight so I had a prime opportunity here.
This version is slicker, with an 80′s rock background that has a sure retro appeal. It was obviously shot in a warmer climate. Rick Springfield has a lean and hungry watch that contibutes to his tortured vampire character as he runs the gamut of emotion from tormented to tormented. While probably a better actor, Geraint Wynn Davies who played the character in the series, has to fight against his sleek, blond appearance. Somehow it is easier to perceive as if you have a brooding, soul-destroying secret if you are a brunette.
I also really enjoyed the incompatibility between Nick’s starvling, blood junkie pose and Alyce Hunter, the Mayan scholar, constantly stuffing herself with junk food. I also enjoyed her glimpse since Wardrobe apparently dressed her from Banana Republic wait on in the satisfactory dilapidated days before BR became a mall shop.
Anyway, the movie is not abominable at all if you are in the mood for some vampire mind candy with a bit of retro.

I am a enormous fan of CSI and while I admire all both the modern and the NY franchise, CSI MIAMI is my accepted of the shows. I like the Horatio CAINE character and am a colossal fan of actor David CARUSO. CSI MIAMI also has the vast advantage of novel diverse locations (the ocean, the Everglades, marinas, etc) which are immense backdrops for interesting crime stories, while on the other hand in Vegas there is unprejudiced desert and neon-lights and Unusual York has been the setting of too many movies and series to be “original”. Besides, CSI MIAMI stars stunningly glowing Southern Belle Emily PROCTER

I finished the DVD box of season three a couple of days ago. It is tall stuff that will appeal to all fans of the series. What I found particularly curious with season three is the misfortune and expenditure that went into it – you know, the episodes are more like condensed feature films for cinematic release. You have a plane demolish (episode MONEY PLANE), a yacht ramming a bridge (LOST SON), a tsunami (CRIME WAVE), attacks with rocket propelled grenades (PIRATED), sizable explosions (10-7, among others) etc Really awesome! Okay, nitpickers will argue that the computer generated tidal wave in CRIME WAVE was not up to Hollywood blockbuster standard, but hey, it is a TV prove! I have seen far worse computer effects.
Season three managed to add more human depth to the characters and their development. There is the death of Speedle in the first episode (very touching, indeed), his replacement by ambitious cop Ryan WOLFE and the evolving rivalry between WOLFE and DELKO, Calleigh’s father is quiet unable to cease the booze (detailed in the unfortunately rather primitive episode UNDER THE INFLUENCE) and Horatio learns that his brother is calm alive (more on that in the last episode of the series) . Personally I miss the Speedle character and I mediate Ryan WOLFE is a veteran replacement. With all due respect to the fans of the character and actor Jonathan TOGO, but I score this over-ambitious and enthusiastic guy more than annoying!
Most of the episodes are ample storywise, although there are some exceptions. For instance, the aforementioned episode UNDER THE INFLUENCE was quite predictable – from the moment it was established that Calleigh’s father was fervent in a car accident when driving drunk, I knew that the guy he speed over was already boring long before the car hit him. Other more unremarkable episodes are Abolish IN A FLASH and ADDICTION.
PIRATED is my celebrated season three episode. The location concerns weapon smuggling with a fishing boat, high sea piracy and political radicals, who utilize RPGs to terrorize Latino immigrants (while a subplot in the episode revolves around cannibalism among sailors adrift the ocean in their life raft) . Space and forensics are top notch, e.g. when residue from the utilize fumes of a bazooka is found in the nose of a culprit it puts him on the crime scene. However I have issues with the ideology this particular episode promotes – it goes out of its arrangement to promote multi-culturalism, a point which is re-iterated in some dialogues towards the raze of the episode again and again. That said, PIRATED is mammoth.
Buy,Download, Or Stream C.S.I. Miami – The Complete Third Season! Click Here
Other spacious episodes are CRIME WAVE (although the heist place – taking adavantage of a tsunami to steal a bank – is a bit too elaborated and complicated to be fully believeable) and SEX AND TAXES (concerning the violent deaths of not one but two revenue service agents) . SEX AND TAXES also featured a forensic accountant finding indispensable clues to the crimes (being an accountant – albeit not a forensic one – myself, I simply fancy this episode) .
It needs to be pointed out that even weaker episodes usually have their merits like freak causes of death (for instance by paint ball gun in the HELL NIGHT episode or decapitation by shutter [ADDICTION]) . I really care for the imagination of the script writers, when they advance up with stuff like the aforementioned (or a drive-by shooting by boat in PRO PER.) And suffice to say that the forensic stuff is hugely educational, well made and simply ample!
There is a host of extra features on disc 7. These include:
* CSI MIAMI DEEP BLUE SEA – a very titillating featurette about underwater film shooting both in the ocean and in a fishtank.
* Two making ofs (CSI MIAMI DELIVERING THE GOODS and VISUALIZING SEASON 3) . You have the usual interviews with the actors, where they explain on their respective characters, but also hugely engrossing stuff about the stuntwork in the series and memorable explore inside the shooting of the vault scenes when the tsunami wave hits the bank in the CRIME WAVE episode.
* An superior 8 piece featurette hosted by the series` consultant ( a accurate life coroner), which is an ultra rapidly paced wreck course in forensic medicine ranging from autopsy proceedures to various causes of death (gun shot injure, blunt force trauma, asphyxation), illustrated with snippets from various episodes. Very racy!
* A brief documentary on the locations. While I knew that grand of the series is actually shot in California I was not aware of the enormous extent. A residence scout is being interviewed commenting on the difficulties finding convincing stand in locations. It is also depicted how sometimes CGI effects are mature for greater authenticity (e.g. to occupy hills in the background, as Miami is completly flat)
Despite some shortcomings a certain recommendation! Lift it now if you have not already done so!
CSI:Miami, having evolved with pains over the first two seasons, reaches its high point in Season 3. Anyone who has watched the explain realizes that Horatio, unlike Gil Grissom or Mac Taylor, is the moral star of the reveal. The rest of the CSIs are arresting, but the indicate is truly about him. This dynamic, when combined with the glamour and glitz of the Miami setting and crimes most harmful, compose this for me the CSI that is above the rest.
Plotwise, season 3 is bit over the top. Issues covered in this season include a stalker execute, a sports star on trial for his wife’s slay, a young woman killed in a club, the kill of a uniformed cop, gang warfare in a hospital, the killings of IRS agents, bustle dating that ends in a death, spree killing, and the cancel of a wingwoman. Some of the lesser episodes involve our faded friend Clavo Cruz, a giant boa contricter that eats a woman, skaters and gamers, and of course, the putrid tsunami episode. The season incorporates the Raymond Caine subplot heavily in the last 5 or 6 episodes. This leads up to a satisfying conclusion in the season finale.
The season is also one of change. A regular cast member gets killed in episode 1, which quite frankly, was quite a relief since the character was dreadful. Another regular, not a CSI, kills himself. A current cast member joins, Officer Ryan Wolfe, makes the transfer from patrol to CSI, and making some waves in the process. Callie and Delco (who has very cramped to do this season) have a tough time dealing with tragedy, and we actually seek Horatio dating a rather lovely Assistant DA, at least for a few episodes. Some veteran familiars pop by, including Suzy and Madison, and Raymond Caine’s killer Bob, who ends up being noteworthy more necessary in the narrative than we assumed. All in all it adds up to a tremendous season, which will be extremely difficult to top in Season 4.
People either like or disfavor this indicate, so if you count yourself among the fans, this is a must addition to the collection.

Although there is nothing in the credits of Well-kept Gigantic PRIX or on the DVD case that would explain it, the film contained is an English-dubbed 92-minute anime movie compiled from the Japanese gripping TV series, “Arrow Emblem, Hawk of the Expansive Prix” (aka Arrow Emblem Great Prix no Taka), which ran for 44 episodes from 1977-78. The series tells the sage of young Sean Corrigan, nicknamed “Rupture,” a cocky American urge car driver based in Japan, who experiences a number of mishaps and failures and has to score his confidence wait on and learn to work with others before achieving his dream of winning a formula car racing championship. This version focuses on a handful of assume narrative arcs from the new, including Sean’s participation in a road rally in Japan; the building of his enjoy car and his test hurry down Mount Fuji(!) in a blistering snowstorm; and his participation in the Monte Carlo Alpine rally. The racing epic may not be of initial interest to many anime fans, although it’s actually quite inspiring throughout, not least because the focus is on an arrogant, but sympathetic American protagonist butting heads with Japanese colleagues, a theme usually only seen–and quite rarely–as a subplot in anime, but given center stage here.

More importantly, however, anime fans should check this out for the wealth of illustrative detail in the racing scenes. This is a far bawl from the more streamlined high-tech racing action found in the earlier “Rush Racer” (1967) series and it’s quite different from the CGI-created racing scenes in the more current “Initial D” (1998) . All created by hand-drawn cell animation, the hasten action in Trim Enormous PRIX is delineated with amazing care. The textures of the road surfaces are quite realistic and the movements of the extremely detailed cars are quite fluid for something made for TV in 1977. Sean’s car is built from scratch and it looks that draw. The surfaces view like they’ve been driven on and the cars ogle like they’ve seen a lot of action. Granted, the character designs are more standard for the era and they do win the characters from “Accelerate Racer” in deliberate ways. (There are Trixie, Spritle and Racer X counterparts here.) But, overall, the animation quality is quite a revelation for anime fans whose only exposure to 1970s anime is through some of the classic place series of that era.
The director of this series was none other than Rintaro, who went on to impart a number of major anime classics, including the two GALAXY Relate 999 movies; the apocalyptic thriller, HARMAGEDDON; the ninja masterpiece, DAGGER OF KAMUI; two episodes of SPIRIT WARRIOR; X: THE MOVIE, based on the Clamp manga; and the Osamu Tezuka adaptation, METROPOLIS.

There are many fine reviews of “Glory” to be found here. I feel the same blueprint about this fabulous film, and after touching on the legend I would like to talk about this DVD release(observe above) which is an outstanding quality and great value.
“Glory” is an exceptional film. A suitable legend of the Civil War that is both touching and inspirational. It depicts the sage of the first dusky unit from the North to be trained and actually go into battle. Led by their very empathetic but very young Colonel(played brillantly by Matthew Broderick), the 54th Regiment endures many hardships felt not only by being soldiers of this devastating war but as African Americans as well.Their spirit, pride and tears along the blueprint, is projected in this film by these incredible actors in a plot that will earn you feel all the difficulty and pride that they felt.

The cast includes Morgan Freeman as the Sergeant who is the motivating force unhurried the soldiers. His performance is stirring. Denzel Washington, awarded Best Supporting Actor by Oscar for his role as the runaway slave looking for a home will proceed you to tears(or at least effect a lump in your throat, which remains throughout), and Andre Braugher’s smile and tenacity will grab you and sustain you.The cinematography and sound(both also honored by Oscar) are lovely.Beautifully directed by Edward Zwick it is a war fable that is more than action, it is one you won’t soon forget.
Often, the different DVD editions wind up on the same product page. You may have found yourself on the page of the “Special Edition” of Glory. That is the 2 disc edition with lots of special features. If these are principal to you in a DVD than that is the one you should probably go with. However, if you really like this film, but don’t want to use as worthy for all the extras, this edition is identified by ASIN:0800177967. It is half the tag of the “Special Edition”,and is a heavenly transfer as well. You have the choice of viewing it in the modern widescreen(1.85:1) or a corpulent cloak version. The characterize is resplendent, absorbing, crisp and shipshape. Colors spectacular. Depending on your spot up the sound options are 5.1(Digital Dolby) or 2-channel surround.I watched it in the 5.1 and was very impressed. All the sounds of the Civil War were sure and obvious. The music astounding. It may be viewed in Spanish or French and has subtitles in English, Spanish and French also.
Whatever edition you settle, this a a film that is a blooming addition to your DVD collection. It is one that will be watched again and again. Thank you and relish…..Laurie
Being a Civil War reenactor, as a group we tend to be very skeptical of the historical movies that hollywood provides.Glory is probably the only movie that almost every reenactor liked and sung the praises for. Glory stands out as a masterpiece of this bad time in the nations history. The cast was outstanding. Broderick is entirely convincing in his role as the idealistic young Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who commanded ONE of the first all sad units of the Civil war. Morgan freeman captures the persona of the “wise, musty seargeant” that is a classic motif of the war movie genre. However to me the actor who steals the exhibit is without a doubt Denzel Washington. Washington gave even us rebs someone to care for(even as he was taking down 2 and 3 rebs at a time) as he went from the inflamed, rebellious young private(and for suited reason) to the glorious soldier.

The place of the movie is consistent, and came across as a honest Anecdote to the audience, and not honest a lecture. The film captured the extremely racist attitudes of the time, and the reveal hell that the characters went through to overcome it. Also the catch was large, especially the final climatic scene for the attack on Battery Wagner. When Shaw is killed by Confederates, the acquire picks up with a perfect tune as the 54th makes their final assault. But most importantly the movie does not bore the average viewer like Gettysburg did with its hours of talk. The movie takes a very wonderful yarn, throws in some vast characters, and follows it to a T. There is no wasted scene in Glory(which is more then we can say for other Civil war attempted movies) . This made it a joy for both Civil War buff and regular viewer alike.
Now for the stout sticking point. Historical accuracy. To this the movie scores a rather well come by. Certain the final battle was not 100 percent true, and even the earliar skirmish in the woods(known in the war as the Battle for Sol Legare Island) . But this movie was not a documentary. Its goal was not to give a blow by blow history of the 54th… objective to utter their general “anecdote”. With that intent, the movie greatly lived up to its accolades for its accuracy. The battle scenes were outstanding and gave war its “hellish” conception that was absent in Gettysburg to stout degree. Only Private Ryan beats this movie in its finish at showing the viewer a taste of War.
Glory has also been arguable the most influential Civil War movie of all time. Tens of Thousands of people who had never picked up a Civil war book in their life, became curved on this time period from Glory. That will perhaps be one of its finer legacies. How many african Americans(and Americans in general) became aware for the first time of those Blacks who wore a uniform in the Civil War from this movie. Countless. How many people do not know that honored legacy now that Glory has arrive out. Very few.

Movie Title: 28 Days 28 Days is available for streaming or downloading. |
Director Betty Thomas has achieved something rare: A recent movie that tackles a serious sing and emerges with it’s tastefulness intact. “28 Days” has the spot of a drama, the soul of a comedy, the feel of a documentary and a wonderful performance by Sandra Bullock that gives each genre a area in the glorious mix of this unbelievable movie.
Bullock is Gwen Cummings, an alcoholic, pill popping journalist who is sentenced to consume 28 days in a rehab center she drunkenly steals a limo and crashes it into a house. Leaving slow her boozy British boyfriend Jasper (superbly played by Domonic West), Gwen soon finds the back and opinion of her eccentric and often hilarious current neighbors. There’s Eddie (Viggo Mortensen), the washed up baseball player who’ll sleep with anyone; Oliver (Mike O’Malley), the wisecracking Park Avenue pot addict; Andrea (Azura Skye), a young woman addicted to drugs and a preposterous soap opera called “Santa Cruz,” which she eventually turns everyone on to; and Gerhardt (Alan Tudyk), the wacky German. “28 Days,” unlike an “Erin Brokovich” where one star dominates, is an ensemble film that allows a variety of talents to shine. And with a cast of this caliber, sometimes that shine rivals the stars themselves in brightness.
Despite many droll moments, it’s the dramatic aspects of “28 Days” that fabricate it huge. When Gwen becomes so desperate for her pills that she jumps out the window to fetch some she threw away earlier, the obsessiveness and despair of dependency are captured at their most knowing. Then there’s her petrified relationship with her sister Lily (sensitively portrayed by Elizabeth Perkins), who can’t determine whether she wants to give up on the woman who has never been there for her, or stand by her in the hope that she will reform, risking having her heart broken yet again.

It’s because Bullock and screenwriter Susannah Grant have made Gwen such a likable character that these situations have exact bite. Sine we can’t resolve whether we worship her or disfavor her, we sustain watching the movie on the edge of our seats, searching for something that will proove to us once and for all what Gwen Cummings is. The movie wisely avoids giving us a straight reply to that and many other questions, allowing the viewer instead to execute their contain decisions and compose their maintain relationaships with the characters and the things they encounter.
“28 Days” is a triumph for all enthusiastic. There’s nothing better for a cynical critic like me then proof on the hide that films inspiring stories with titillating characters are serene being made. Perhaps the best news of all is the resurrection of Sandra Bullock’s career after three flops in a row. If she continues to reveal such wise judgement in choosing her projects, this abominable man’s Julia Roberts may be topping the A-list once again.
Sandra Bullock is the industry’s common girl next door, mighty to her have well-reported chagrin. But there is honest something about her that exudes “next-door” charm, whether or not she supports the label’s overuse. Maybe it’s because she’s such a gem of a person, especially compared to the coldness of many of today’s enormous stars.
So when you are about to seek this film you will anticipate that it be light-hearted, not serious, in other-words, totally Sandra. But the only thing light-hearted about the movie are the circumstances several of the supporting cast members earn themselves into. Sandra plays this alcoholic with all of the angst she’s got. And it’s a heck of a lot more than anyone would have pegged her for.

So is she depressing to observe like this? Yes and no. Depressing because, based on those wrong preconceptions us idle viewers have, you’re waiting for her to jump out and say “Impartial kidding!” throughout the movie – her usual style – and, to everyone’s surprise, she really doesn’t. She gives every ounce of credibility and intensity to a role that many would like to write off simply b/c it is too hard to change one’s preconceptions.
I am so angry when I stumble upon a performance, such as this one, that allows me to deepen my respect for an actor. Sandra has deepened everyone’s respect with this role. She is a consummate professional actress: She plays every role as if it were herself and only herself on the veil.
And hey, even if it IS only acting, she fooled me . . .

The first disc features 11 deleted and extended scenes. There’s more of the opening ambush with Tony Stark being more proactive. We also gaze more footage of Rhodes and it lickety-split becomes apparent that he was the character with the most scenes sever from the film. We also peer Tony and Pepper Potts wait on another party.

The second disc starts off with the impressive “I Am Iron Man,” a 108 runt making of documentary that can be viewed in seven segments or altogether, taking us through various aspects of the production. For example, we are taken step-by-step through the construction of the Iron Man armor with Robert Downey Jr. cracking jokes while being fitted for it. It’s incredible how great of the suit is practical and looks really suitable in person. This is due in broad allotment to the genius of the late-great Stan Winston and his company. Also included is plenty of soundstage footage of scenes being filmed.
“The Invincible Iron Man” is a six-part documentary on the laughable book, tracing the history of the character. Stan Lee says that he modeled Stark after Howard Hughes, for the most share. He also mentions that he was never fully cheerful with the search for of the armor – hence its many changes over the years. This doc also covers various key characters and storylines in suited detail with several people who worked on the title over the years talking about their contribution to the mythos. This is a very well done overview of the comical book.

“Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man” examines the CGI work that went into realizing Iron Man’s powers, like flying, his repulsors, and so on. Director Jon Favreau says that he likes to employ practical effects whenever possible, which is wonderfully refreshing to hear, and in this film he mixed the practical with CGI.
“Robert Downey Jr. Shroud Test.” Incredibly, the actor had to do a veil test because the studio deemed him a uncertain proposition and this footage shows that he had a handle on the character very early on.
“The Actor’s Process” features intriguing footage of Jeff Bridges and Downey rehearsing a scene with Favreau. It’s immense to perceive these guys at work and offers insight into how they achieve together a scene from the film from an acting point-of-view.
“The Onion’s Wildly Favorite Iron Man Trailer to be Adapted into Full-Length Film” is a silly satire where a newscaster “breaks” a tale of how the Iron Man trailer will be made into a film that pokes fun at the rabid nature of the hardcore fanbase of the character.
Finally, there are “Galleries,” featuring plan art, technology stills, behind-the-scenes photographs, and poster art.
There was a mountainous expect effect looming over the theatrical adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Man property. It was in the guise of director Jon Favreau. Now, don’t obtain me rank, I worship the Favs, but when I heard he was helming a astronomical budget silly book flick…let’s honest say I was a cramped horrified. Once his cast was status and the fanboys started humming across the internet I started to ease into the decision with high anticipation. Thankfully, after finally seeing the finished product, I was not disappointed in the least. With a tremendous mix of the professionalism and stakes seen in both Spider-Man and X-Men and the droll wit and sheer fun of Improbable Four, Iron Man shows how a laughable can be brought to the conceal successfully without all the added drama and weight. We finally have a film with the essence of what makes these recount books so current, the action and mythology along with a sense of adventure and humor. Favreau never bogs us down with overwrought emotions nor speaks down to us with gags and poorly written jokes. Instead he delivers on his promises and gives us a solid initiation into what could be a vast trilogy or more.
Favreau seems to have had an opinion to earn an origin account out while not plain us with long drawn out succor legend. His ability to give us dual information at once is nicely orchestrated, showing Tony Stark in his basement creating while the TV in the background explains what is happening in the outside world of the Middle East and inside his occupy company. We as an audience are allowed to do the pieces together amidst the witty banter of Stark and the astounding special effects. By the ruin of the film it is quite fantastic how remarkable information you will realize you now know, all culminating in a decent final battle, but more importantly a segue into the inevitable sequel. We are allowed entrance into the character evolution of Stark as he goes from war profiteer to man of action and cause, all while seeing the technology improve and reach before our eyes. Distinguished like Batman, we have a hero here that needs succor in fighting crime. He has no superhuman abilities besides his brain and being able to view his thoughts go from paper to reality is a feat of magic. Every stage is shown, every failure and success. It’s quite the run in and of itself, but when you add onto it the threat of global war and destruction, it can only net better.
The actual success here is in the plucky recede of casting an actor over-40 to be a superhero. This takes guts, because no matter how appropriate it is, most studios would have said, “no, change the yarn and perform him younger so we can churn out as many of these babies as we can.” I don’t know how he did it, but Favreau got Marvel to score Robert Downey Jr. to play Stark, a sarcastic Lothario with the brain capacity of Einstein. I truly can’t mediate of anyone better safe to the role and he proves it by nailing every single scene. I’m distinct there was some ad-libbing, but even if not, his laughable delivery and ability to switch on a dime to a right seriousness at will shows his masterful craft.
As for the rest of the cast, they all do well. Jeff Bridges plays the bombastic creature of villainy over-the-top, but appropriately so; Terrence Howard is nice as the friend and military liaison, not given remarkable to do, but definitely sowing seeds for the future; and Gwyneth Paltrow is safe as the sweet assistant Pepper Potts who at times seems a cramped underwritten and more female prop than anything else, but comes through with some nice moments in a very silly sort of arrangement. I also really liked Shaun Toub as Yinsen, Stark’s savior, and Clark Gregg as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reliable to watch Favreau giving another actor turned director props, (Gregg’s directorial debut comes out later this year in the design of Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke) . I honest wish he would have shied away from putting himself in the film. It’s one thing to be seen split-second, (like Stan Lee), but its another to give yourself a thankless role with multiple scenes, unprejudiced adding fuel to the fire on people’s opinions of egotism stemming from the drinking game created off of the TV prove “Dinner for Five” and how many references to Swingers was made each episode. I’ll forgive, though, because, once again, I’m a gigantic fan.
One can’t forget that this is an action film above all else, so we can’t impartial praise the actors; every attain is also quite shining. Those scenes of Iron Man flying amongst fighter jets in the trailer seemed really lame, but when in context they protest. The suit itself is unbelievable as well, through every mach stage fair to the raze. My main highlight, however, was with the computer systems that Stark utilizes. The multiple screens, instant holographic reproductions, and ability to actually interact with those 3D representations is graceful. We can develop them in fantasy, but it’s impartial too terrible we can’t yet in actual life.
Now Iron Man is not a perfect film, nor even a perfect silly book adaptation. What it is, though, is a fun, amusing actioner that should light up the box office. The final showdown is a bit of a whimper in comparison to the encourage narrative and machine creation; a crucial element is saved from destruction in the one contrived bit of conceal writing, (not quite utilized in the draw I concept, although detached for the same means) ; and some moments seem a tad campy rather than witty, but otherwise this is some topnotch cinema that should definitely be seen on the gargantuan camouflage. I can’t wait to survey how the account progresses in a couple years.

Another aesthetic documentary by David Grubin. Mr. Grubin is the finest documentary filmmaker working today, and that includes Ken Burns. David Strathairn does a fabulous job portraying Dr. Oppenheimer. The interviews with those who knew Oppie are favorable and each does a magnificent job in adding layers to this complicated yarn of an improbable man. The interviews with the biographers (Martin Sherwin, Priscilla McMillan, and Herbert York) are especially insightful. The reveal concentrates on only one of the “huge things” in Robert’s life — his role as scientific advisor after the war, although his Manhattan project work is also excellently described. His childhood is briefly but nicely sketched. Even his physics before the war is touched on, although exiguous is made of his bringing unusual physics fully into America (he was far more than fair a quick-witted professor at Berkeley) .

It makes sense to concentrate on his “trial” because that is where most of the drama lies. That is where he is most clearly seen as a victim. It even touches a itsy-bitsy on his self-inflicted wounds, especially in his inappropriate relationship with Truman and Eisenhower and their administrations. Robert was loved by physicists for his nurturing of original physics and was loved by the nation, for a while, with his Manhattan Project successes. But his guilt was so excessive that it truly unhinged him despite his broad intellect. His tactlessness with considerable people is only briefly hinted at. He made enemies, boy did he!
His personal life is slightly touched on. Robert fair wasn’t the type of person who could function well in a political setting. He was ill-suited to being a scientific advisor — his only advantage was his brilliance scientifically. But the decisions Truman and Eisenhower had to earn were not, fundamentally, scientific decisions. They were national security decisions, and Robert had no background at all in idea national security.

This is the biggest weakness of Grubin’s anecdote. Robert gyrated wildly in opining on many aspects of national security and he never gained the trust of those who he was advising. His choices in preparing for his “trial” were tactically horrendous. Compare him to, for example, Oliver North, who battled mightily in front of Congress and the nation. North knew how to fight on a political stage. Oppie didn’t. He let himself be tortured — unprejudiced like he did in childhood that time at summer camp.
Be determined to read Kai Bird’s and Martin Sherwin’s “American Prometheus” and Richard Rhodes’ “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” and “Sad Sun”.
David Strathaim is the perfect actor to play the beleaguered Robert Oppenheimer, even resembling him physically. I wish they had included the poignant episode where walking in the desert after the explosion of the first atomic bomb; a turtle crosses his map. He picks it up to bring home to his daughter. After a while he stops, turns around and goes support and places it again precisely where he took it with a articulate that he has already done enough injure to the world. This, for me has always summed up his conflict – building the bomb and as the film is careful to point out in several instances helping and advising how to descend the bomb to beget the most destruction.
What and where the hearings occurred that took his clearance away and seemed to kill him emotionally are described and recreated. Using transcripts of the trials Oppenheimer’s problems with the communist witch hunt are shown. Using genuine pictures of Oppenheimer and then the recreations of him by David Strathaim we examine the fair details of his mind and how it worked. What really comes out is Oppenheimer`s naivety in how his connections with communist party members would affect him.
It is curious and I wish they could have made clearer why General Groves chose him over noteworthy incredulity to head the Manhattan Project.
As with so many films of this genera the `talking heads’ can be distracting and or expressionless. I have especially found that students in school have an marked abominate to this expend of someone looking at the camera explaining their experiences. I have to admit they could give these interviewees their bit of `fame’ and then employ their narration over pictures and films rather than sitting and watching someone talking to the camera.
However, as with most DVD’s of the American Experience series the subject is well covered with big accuracy and a high interest factor to those who wish to learn more about history.
There are director’s comment in the extras, explaining who Oppenheimer was and what happened to him. A teacher’s guide is included by inserting the DVD into a computer
