The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Boring is, of course, for the unique, uncut, unadulterated edition. The modern is, quite simply, the most frightening movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to awe classics like Diabolique (the unique French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shimmering. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years customary on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film collected gives me the chills whenever I peek it (usually at Halloween) .

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was entertaining to sight what they termed as “current footage.” What I got was a ghastly mess that butchered the unique film, removed the novel music for a bad synthesizer obtain and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a original character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the recent is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the new cast view like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the unusual. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the fresh 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the original footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a original ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “novel” version is a share of trash that desecrates the most horrid film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dreary has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to explain.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Wearisome fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did legal by this novel edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the relieve of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the represent and sound are obedient, and though this doesn’t exactly beget the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the reliable 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the modern double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You win a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but calm huge) ; an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen) ; the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition) ; two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating part of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually lifeless but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to acquire Night of the Living Insensible.

THIS is the just edition of Night of the Living Dull, the one to rep for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the principal people (search for that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the intention it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Tiring, and Day of the Plain…

Takashi Miike is the very definition of a visionary filmmaker. To call him the most prolific director on the planet might be the understatement of the decade. The man churns out film after film with staggering variety, endless creativity, and a lot of style while never failing to wreck every boundary of taste and genre. He’s conquered the heights of truly disturbing apprehension, redefined disgusting, shown us horrific violence, that like is torture, and spoofed the superhero genre as well while making as many as nine films in a single year. No joke. So having crossed every line possible, what’s left? Why not bring a katana to a gunfight and contemplate what happens? “Sukiyaki Western Django” is to the western film genre what Extinguish Bill was to the martial-arts genre: a adore letter in cinematic gain from across the Pacific Ocean. And obvious enough, Miike-sensei brought Quentin Tarantino along for the swagger. Tighten your bootstraps, this one’s a doozy.

I am not a fan of western films, but Asian cult cinema: hell yes. I would qualify this film as an absolute must-see for either/or and I imagine there is no shortage of western references and homages that flew over my head due to my inexperience with the genre. The title is an droll Japanese play on the “spaghetti western” nickname coupled with the name of a classic example of the genre itself. Why this is relevant doesn’t state itself until the last scene so I won’t spoil it. The movie is almost schizophrenic (as is it’s town sheriff) in it’s mish-mash of styles. Some scenes overflow with colorful colors and classic Japanese imagery, other times the shots are yellowish with muted colors like a classic western and feature those sorts of settings. One character has a holstered gun on one hip and a sheathed katana on the other. One gang dresses in shining red -including some dyed emo-style hair- and the other in pure white. All of the weapons are old-school, but there are recent bits like facial piercings as well. At one point, Tarantino hints at the origin of his character’s son’s name (Akira) by declaring himself “an anime otaku at heart” to which the other character responds with a baffled “what!? “. Absolutely gleaming and uncalled for. Exactly the kind of oddball moment one never expects, but Miike delivers anyway. The yarn is a convoluted one that demands you pay attention to it, but I had to rewatch several stretches because I was utterly distracted by the bizarre nature of the film itself. For example, the opening scene features Tarantino in front of an obviously painted background. Blood even splatters onto it when he shoots a guy. There is also a short-but-sweet absorbing flourish during one of his stories about a female gunfighter (Bloody Benton) . How can you be expected to pay attention to the dialogue when this movie is continually throwing you these kinds of visual curve-balls? Not so worthy a complaint as an observation.

“Sukiyaki Western Django” is an almost entirely English (Engrish? ) language film. While I do very worthy respect Miike’s artistic decision to film the movie in the native language of the stories that inspired it, it does ruin up detracting from the quality. It is painfully distinct at times that the actors are unaware of honest what they are saying as they attempt to act while pronouncing every word phonetically. This is not right for all of the actors, but it happens often enough to be a distraction. The gargantuan showdown is explosive enough to obtain John Woo envious. There is some very bright action, a recurring bit where a gunshot produces an explosion of feathers from off camera -which may or may not be an droll homage to Woo himself-, some sex appeal (the image of Bloody Benton licking her sizzling gun barrel is staying with me for a while), some glowing unlit humor, an entrancing and sensual dance sequence, and plenty more for film fanatics to sink their teeth into here. You will not be disappointed.

Like the young boy in this chronicle born of the union between red and white gang members and the lovely two-toned roses his family tends to, this movie is neither here nor there. It is East-meets-West to the hilt. A perfect hybrid of offbeat Asian cinema and the former western. It is utterly spellbinding to fans of either and should be considered mandatory viewing. Check out “Sukiyaki Western Django” if the premise appeals to you in any contrivance and a genuine time will be had by all. Now off into the sunset I perambulate.

Recipe for Film: Originate with one female assassin/warrior (Kaori Moimoi) first-rate of the Goddess Kali in her most destructive make and area her in an 1800′s Asian/western setting (Asian western? ) . Then accept a gargantuan, mysterious actor (Hideyaki Ito) who can pull off a Clint Eastwood-like persona to play the unusual stranger in town and another actor (Masanobu Yoichi) in an adversarial role who looks like he unprejudiced stepped out of an Anime drawing. Simmer slowly while adding a helpful fragment of Kurosawa nihilism for 121 minutes until the camouflage is red with blood and fair about everyone’s stupid. Dinner…, I mean entertainment is served!

That in a nutshell is Takashi Miilke’s ‘Sukiyaki Western Django’. If you enjoy; surreal imagery, subtle (and not so subtle) parody, faux depth and lots of death and destruction this is the film for you. And if that’s not enough to hold you entertained how about taking a notice at the resplendent Yoshino Kimura as the ill-fated Shizuka? This one is certainly worth your time and the ticket of a bag of popcorn.

But let’s gather the negatives out of the arrangement first, to account for why I gave it four stars rather than five:

1) One reviewer for Volume 1 complained that there was too microscopic material extracted from a six-year period of broadcasts. Unfortunately, Volume 2 presents the same limits.

2) If a Volume 3 is ever released, please omit the Falling Baker skit for the Number Two. With the unique two volumes, it’s been repeated to death. Give us more variety — at least treat us to that elusive Number One skit (Baker falling with a wedding cake) .

3) Same packaging is faded as in Volume 1, with two of the three discs annoying stacked on top of each other.

4) One Super-Grover skit appears to be needlessly edited with unique material.

5) That irritating disclaimer saying the DVDs may not be appropriate teaching material for today’s kids. (Might the lobster-trap segment be too un-PC? ) My 3-year-old nephew absolutely loves watching Volume 1, so I anticipate the same reception for Volume 2.

Nonetheless, this DVD space almost earned five stars from me for two main reasons:

1) The nostalgia finish was much enough to nearly override the negatives.

2) There’s one absolutely can’t-miss-feature in Disc One — the test pilot feeble to pitch the display to PBS! It’s one of the freakiest gems in this release, with a heavy and admirable “Soul Suppose” poke running through the episode, an atypically grievous Mr. Hooper, no kids singing “Sunny Day” (it took a moment for me to observe the squawk), and precious keen skits that I wish had been included in Volume 1 (notably Triangle & Square) . And is that the actor that I judge it is, playing a FOURTH Gordon??!!

As with Volume 1, I nearly cried seeing some skits that jogged bittersweet memories out of my subconscious (horseback mailman delivering an disclose of “The Wearisome Truth” in the outskirts of Kentucky), and some that I view I’d never discover again but which I’m grateful to say I bear at last (cows being fed hay in winter) . Some material almost unsettled me as a kid but I now procure hilarious (King Minus), while some is of honest downright laugh-out-loud quality (Grover’s show-and-tell with Maria’s head) .

You’ll also gather the following: Telephone Rock, I’m a hard-working dog, surprisingly more of Roosevelt Franklin, Cookie Monster in flamboyant Elton-John wardrobe, the moment when Woof-Woof’s name was changed to Barkley (a change I voted against as a kid, but which I now can’t imagine having occurred otherwise), and one moment when Snuffy came so stop to being discovered by David. I could go on! But you’ll have to peer for yourselves.

I must admit my hope that, if there’s a Volume 3, it’s willing to go succor and conceal more of ’69-’74.

The film is definitely on my top ten list of funniest movies of all time, with “Some Like it Hot,” “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation” and the Monty Python masterpieces…

But this DVD is atrocious. The soundtrack is all in the center channel… haven’t heard anything worse since I gave up watching a TV with a 3 inch speaker. The theme song is burbled and warbly. There is no separation — even to the front speakers. The dialog is flat as a flitter.

The picture quality is a hair better than off the air, rabbit ear antennae reception. At times the picture is choppy and halting — as if you were watching it on a rental video that has been viewed too many times.

The only extra is the film’s trailer.

Wait for a re-release before buying!

Starting with the commonplace idea of a jewel robbery gone maniacally wrong, actor John Cleese and director Charles Crichton manage have created a madcap comedy that remains fresh, even after 10 years. George (Tom Georgeson), assisted by his girlfriend Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis), his best pal Ken (Michael Palin) and Wanda’s ‘brother’ Otto (Kevin Kline) has orchestrated a robbery that has only one fatal flaw – none of the participants have any intention of sharing the loot. In short order, double-crosses seem to grow on trees and George finds himself under arrest. It is only fitting that Wanda and Otto simultaneously discover that the jewels have been moved ‘for safekeeping.’

It doesn’t take very long for Wanda to figure out that her only hope of regaining the loot is through George’s barrister, Archie Leach (John Cleese). Wanda works at seducing Leach while fighting of Otto’s psychotic fits of jealousy. Ken, in the meantime, attempts repeatedly to kill the only witness, an elderly woman. Unfortunately, he manages to assassinate all three of her dogs in the process.

This is a set up for the combination of slapstick, vulgarity, and tongue-in-cheek comedy that British films are noted for and Americans love and it is delivered with an almost evil verve. Cleese is determined to take no prisoners, and the landscape is littered with car crashes, fallen masonry, savaged canines (fake savaged canines, please) and hapless victims. Only the fish (also called Wanda) has no funny lines, and fares no better than her companion ‘Lunch’ does.

The film has an R rating, which I think is exaggerated. In reality, its vulgarity and sexual innuendo are hardly noticeable when compared to what is accepted today. I certainly think teenagers can handle it without permanent damage, although you may have to explain to them that certain phrases don’t bear repeating. At this price, expect a bare bones DVD. No added games, no interviews, just the film in French and English, in both wide screen and standard presentations. Even so, this is a classic comedy that will bear much watching.

“A Fish Called Wanda” is a fabulous romp with a group of jewel thieves, of which the term “honor among thieves” has no meaning!
At every turn, they are scheming and manipulating the events, as each wants the loot for themselves. The most scheming and manipulating of all is the lone woman of the bunch, who is also the weak spot for all the fellows. Wanda, played impeccably by Jaime Lee Curtis, has these guys falling over themselves trying to get the loot and the girl! Kevin Kline, John Cleese(who also penned the screenplay)and Michael Palin, will have you in stitches with each and every view. Every time I view it I see or hear some little detail or subtlety I didnt get previously.

Nearly 20 years later(yes fans, it’s been that long), this film has not lost one bit of it’s appeal for those of us that like our humor a little on the bawdy side(Although all in good fun).

But!…Give me a break MGM. This DVD is quite shabby considering the loyal fans this film has.This DVD does have a couple of things going for it. It has the choice of widescreen viewing or standard, has English, and French subtitles, for those who may need them, and includes a booklet with production notes and trivia. Also, the menu page was cute. If you click on the little treasure chest in the aquarium, the screen becomes just the “Wanda” fish swimming around with sound effects. However… as another reviewer mentioned the picture is below average. It does not live up to the reason why we don’t mind paying a little extra for a DVD vs a VHS. The sound is in MONO..what’s up with that? This film is deserving of at least stereo sound.

And as usual, after all of us have already purchased this now classic comedy, MGM is coming up with a new “Deluxe” edition, that is more along the lines of what is expected of a DVD.(Talk about double dipping!)It is a 2 disc edition and shows these features:

1965′s “Color Me Blood Red” is another lop of sickening cinema by H.G. Lewis, the Godfather of Gore. Released one year after “Two Thousand Maniacs,” this film takes status on the sunny beaches of Sarasota, Florida. Actor Don Joseph stars as Adam Sorg, a blunt and frustrated artist who enjoys making obscene comments toward any critic who analyzes his work. Although savvy collectors at Farsworth Galleries are anxious to bewitch his abstract paintings, Adam indignantly refuses to sell them. Isolated in his studio, he has a gigantic deal of worry trying to concoct the best color procedure. Later, when his nagging girlfriend Gigi (Ellen Warner) cuts herself on a jutting canvas nail, Adam is instantly enamored at how blood emits the most colorful shade of red. Immediately, he attempts to veil an entire canvas with his contain hemoglobin; slicing commence his hands with a razor blade, he feverishly smears his have bleeding digits onto a nude portrait, frantically squeezing the wounds before they clot. However, as he became dizzy and lightheaded, it doesn’t rob him long to realize that to enact his masterpiece, he would have to bleed himself dry. So, what does he do instead? As Gigi assails him with yet another tongue-lashing, Adam stabs her in the cranium with a palette knife! Then, in perhaps the most morbid example of artistic expression, he holds up Gigi’s limp corpse and wipes her face on the recount, using her head as a giagantic brush! Eventually, his first inferior painting is complete; we as an audience acquire to perceive it as a repulsive representation of Adam’s obsession with blood. When the critics at Farsworth Galleries inspect this work, they are instantly astounded and query Adam to build more pieces with the same style. Buyers offer the upcoming artist up to $15,000. But, in an insane outburst, he downright refuses to sell the Red Painting. Over time, of course, the guilt relating to Gigi’s death and the pressure to uphold his reputation drive him to the brink of madness.

In a fiendish manner, Adam continues his pattern of bleeding brushstrokes by killing any youth who vacations outside his beach house. At one point, he preys upon two unsuspecting swimmers; driving a motorboat, he stabs a young man in the chest with a harpoon, then grinds apart his flesh with the spinning propellers! The other victim was a woman; he has her tied against the wall with her intestines hanging out! Weeks later, a group of college students site up a picnic on Adam’s cove. Like a crazed stalker, he lures a virginal girl named April (Candi Conder) into his studio, promising her the chance to be a model. I don’t want to give the ending away, but let’s honest say that it includes sweet April in a pink bikini, a minute bit of bondage, and a entertaining axe!

While H.G. Lewis did have a disturbing notion tedious “Color Me Blood Red,” the film fell short overall. The outcome was predictable and the pacing was far too uninteresting. The movie’s grusome humor isn’t as over-the-top when compared to “Two Thousand Maniacs” and “Wizard of Gore.” Unexcited, if you are a ravenous fan of Lewis’s lurid legacy, this DVD is worth purchasing.

Of Lewis’ Blood Trilogy, this is definitely the least bloody. That’s not to say it’s not an involving movie(hence the four stars) though. The now not-so-original station of an artist murdering folks for his art is the basis of the movie. An arrogant schmuck of a painter discovers that missing ingredient for the color of his paintings…….blood of course(assuming the title didn’t give that one away) . After nearly bleeding to death cutting his fingers, artist Adam Sorg resorts to murdering his girlfriend, and then unprejudiced about anybody who winds up on his beach front property. This is intercut with some groovy teenagers partying down on the beach. All the Lewis trademarks are there, but as stated before, a lack of gore for a gore film. That shouldn’t discourage Lewis fans though, coz it’s never dead. Strangely enough, one of the most disturbing scenes uses probably the simplest of fx gags. It makes you cringe a tad seeing Sorg squeezing blood from his fingertips and furiously painting the canvas with it. Fun stuff and certainly worth your time.

MFL is a marvellous film about a professor who turns a approved flower girl into a lady. It is pudgy of sing-a-long songs and comic moments. It is basically a classic for all the honest reasons! Plenty of re-watch factor makes it a film to beget.

In 1994, the film was restored and thank the lord they did! The film’s negative was almost lost forever. In fact, the film had become yellow-tinged and tubby of scratches, blotches and all the rest! It would have been a very sunless day for the movie industry if a flim like this had been lost.

The modern DVD that featured this novel restoration was released in the tedious 90′s. This DVD included a 9 dinky featurette, actor profiles, audio commentary, and Audrey Hepburn singing in 2 scenes.

This new 1-disc DVD has since been updated to a special 2-Disc Edition. Which one to secure? I have both so I feel valid to respond this. The fresh DVD includes all the features found on the current DVD, except the actor profiles. The original DVD once again includes the restored print but is apparently a recent transfer from the restored print. However, according to a characterize that I have read, the original transfer is not perfect and has aliasing problems throughout. The average watcher probably won’t prefer up on this detail. If this is an pronounce to you, seize the novel edition DVD where the transfer has been given two thumbs up!

The advantage of the special 2-Disc Edition DVD is that it includes a 58 runt 1994 documentary hosted by Jeremy Brett (Audrey’s worship interest in the film) . Jeremy is no longer with us, so it’s nice to have this as a fraction of nostalgia. On top of this, there are many more features on this disc that aren’t included on the current DVD such as footage from the film’s premiere, production dinner, as well as discussions with Rex and Audrey.

The choice is easy. If you’re a fan of the film and don’t care for all the extras, lift the modern DVD. You at least accept the best transfer. If you do care about having all the extras, win both!

This is a extremely shapely and stylish movie – the kind of spectacle that you honest don’t recognize any more, in a distinct type of Technicolour that unprejudiced isn’t duplicated these days. Extremely witty and classic songs, a swish script, and graceful costumes. Admittedly, it is peer candy, but what gaze candy! George Cukor directs it with factual aplomb, turning “Titanic-era” London into a stylised and colourful melée, bringing out the humour and joyfulness of the screenplay, and Cecil Beaton’s extravagant and yet, somehow, chic costumes and sets originate a perfect setting for the actors – and the actors themselves are gracious. Rex Harrison is totally believable as Henry Higgins, mixing crustiness with a very dry humour, whereas Audrey Hepburn looks objective proper as Eliza Doolittle. One is forced to ponder what Julie Andrews would have done in the role, following her playing the fraction on stage, but I unprejudiced can’t gaze Eliza played by anyone other than Audrey Hepburn, who is, quite simply, toothsome. From the mawkish, ramshackle flower-girl, to the rebellious pupil, to the frosty and quiet “lady” of the title, she is perfectly credible, whether throwing a Cockney temperament, or floating through the conservatory, calmly sending Professor Higgins about his business. I am told her Cockney accent is bad, but being deaf, I cannot comment; no more than I can comment upon the fact that apparently her recording of “Oh Wouldn’t It Be Luverly” has been reinstated upon the soundtrack. The appeal for this film lies in its spectacle – I saw it at the cinema once, in an arthouse revival, and it was utterly astounding – and in the speech therapy storyline, which has a lot of relevance to me. “My Heavenly Lady” is simply… a cinematic glory of a particular type that would be impossible to duplicate ever again. The Ascot scene is worth the money alone, a refreshing, gliding harmony of shaded and white, choreographed and stylised escapism, totally summing up the essence of a musical.

In an incredible bit of misfortune, ‘Infamous’ will have to live with the stigma of being ‘that other movie’ about Truman Capote writing his masterpiece ‘In Cold Blood’. Over time that distinction may begin to wear off, but only time will tell. The trouble with this situation is that it is impossible to see 2006′s ‘Infamous’ without comparing it to 2005′s ‘Capote’ — even if you try. I promised myself that I would attempt to watch it with a fresh perspective, but within ten minutes I had decidedly broken that promise and started a list of differences and similarities in my mind. What is so unfair about this is that while ‘Capote’ is a very good movie, ‘Infamous’ is just a good one, making its faults stand out that much more by comparing it to its predecessor. Never before has being good not been good enough.

Purists undoubtedly take to ‘Capote’ as the superior film and lambaste ‘Infamous’ as a pretender to the throne, but what they are missing out on are the intriguing differences in perspective that the two films have. It is here that ‘Infamous’ earns its merits, but also where its defining flaw comes into play: that it is too afraid to risk making Truman an unsympathetic character. ‘Capote’ gets at the heart of the deviousness inherent in Truman’s dealings with Perry Smith and Dick Hickock (the killers on death row whose stories, along with those of their victims, comprise ‘In Cold Blood’) — how he used and abused their friendship and trust in order to write his masterpiece. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Truman Capote is an egotistical liar that sells his soul for his story, made sympathetic by Hoffman’s careful portrayal and by the fact that his cruelty causes him to spiral into drink, depression, and ruin for the rest of his life. The makers of ‘Infamous’ shy away from this aspect of Capote, choosing to go for sympathy instead. His deceit is only mentioned in passing — with the effect that you wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking for it. This Truman really cares for Perry Smith, and the film posits that what ruined him after the executions was the loss of the one person he had ever truly connected with. This Truman is a victim of his book’s conclusion rather than culpable in it. It’s an interesting theory, but it holds less weight and feels toothless. I don’t know enough about the facts to speculate as to whether or not the sexual tension that develops between the writer and the convict is accurate, but it does add an element of intrigue to the story.

The relationship between Truman and Perry in ‘Infamous’ adds a layer to the characterization of the author that was missing from ‘Capote’: that he was really a damaged, insecure man at heart, and had been ever since his childhood. The bravado, the confidance, the wit, and the eloquence that Manhattan’s high society adore him for is a mask that he has put on to hide how he really feels about himself. His entire personality is an affectation, and his carefully maintained social life is artifice. Other reviewers have criticized ‘Infamous’ for being too stylized, but I think that they were trying to show how fake his life in New York was — and in my humble opinion they succeeded. Toby Jones’ portrayal is, as such, less natural than Hoffman’s, but is perfectly suited to this intention of the filmmakers and succeeds in its own right. Had ‘Infamous’ come before ‘Capote’ Jones may have been more recognized for his work with an Oscar nomination of his own, but as I said earlier, timing has not been kind to ‘Infamous’. Anyway, Truman and Perry make a connection because they can be who they really are around each other: Perry can talk about his lonely, abusive childhood and desire to be an artist, while Truman can let his guard down and stop acting like a “wind-up doll” (to use a term from the movie). ‘Capote’ gets at the heart of Truman’s duplicity, but ‘Infamous’ gets at the heart of his insecurity.

The two film’s really work as companion pieces, then, so I would encourage everyone to get over their prejudice and look at the two film’s as two different sides of one of America’s most distinctive voices. It is fitting that a personality as outsized as Truman Capote’s couldn’t be captured by only one film, and he would probably be pleased to know that that is the case.

Based on interviews in George Plimpton’s oral biography of Truman Capote, this well done film offers a somewhat different take on the character we’d already come to know through the previous year’s “Capote,” which covers the same storyline – the writing of the author’s bestseller, “In Cold Blood.” Toby Jones gives a notable performance that emphasizes Capote’s vulnerability – reinforced by the actor’s diminutive size – compared to the more arch and self-centered Oscar-winning portrayal turned in by Philip Seymour Hoffman. While both films show how Capote is overwhelmed by the stress of composing this landmark book and waiting for its publication as the two killers are held for years on death row, “Infamous” wants us to believe that Capote fell deeply in love with one of them, Perry, who returned his affection and regarded him to the end as “Friend Truman.” That Capote never wrote anything of the caliber of “In Cold Blood” again and spent the rest of his years in a downward spiral of self destruction is used in the film as evidence that it was the fateful encounter with Perry that ruined him.

Sandra Bullock gives a wonderfully controlled performance as Capote’s lifelong friend Harper Lee, who after the success of “To Kill a Mockingbird” never published another novel and left New York to return to her childhood home in Alabama, where fate provided a much more congenial retreat from the limelight. “Who knows what the heart wants,” she remarks sadly at the end of the film, “and who can defend themselves against it?” And while the film treats its subject with a certain playfulness, reflected in a mostly cheerful and larky soundtrack, it is finally the story of a broken heart. The DVD has a very cogent and informative commentary by writer-director Douglas McGrath. Definitely worth watching, even if you’ve seen “Capote.” Side by side, they demonstrate nicely Capote’s own vision of truth as it’s found in creative nonfiction.

Probably the best order in which to view the films on this subject is this version first, then last year’s, then the Robert Blake movie.

If CAPOTE is a sophisticatedly sec pinot grigio, INFAMOUS is a heartier, fruitier wine. The power of CAPOTE is its restraint, with the complex central character both monstrous and sympathetic in his cool-eyed pragmatism about needing the killers to die in order to complete his book successfully. INFAMOUS suggests that Capote is more emotionally torn by this conflict of interests between his attraction to Perry Smith and his ego as a writer. There’s more wallop throughout the more indulgent film, but CAPOTE’s refusal to provide easier emotional releases makes it the more mature work. That said, I’d be more apt to replay this version.

The opening scene, in which Gwyneth Paltrow struggles through the pain behind the lyric she’s singing, sets the overall approach of this film. It is dramatically effective, it’s well-played, and it telegraphs both the theme and the somewhat manipulative means this movie will rely upon. Similarly, the sexual relationship alleged in the prison sequences is carried off by excellent performances, is graphic as fantasy rather than likelihood, and distinguishes CAPOTE’s restraint as probably a more honest narrative choice.

The acting and period design are excellent–making favorable comparisons to similar ambitions of the period piece on George Reeves’ suicide. Audiences will appreciate INFAMOUS more if they’re aware of the history of Capote’s ANSWERED PRAYERS, the gossip fest that exposed the secrets of all his socialite “swans” and thus cost him their friendships.

It’s interesting that, in all three versions of this existential saga of meaningless virtue and shallow sophisticates, the Perry Smith performance particularly shines. In this instance, Craig all but steals the film as a Tommy Lee Jones-like hunk, though it must be noted that Segourney Weaver is fantastic at the Twist.

The murders at the eye of this maelstrom are depicted in all three versions of the story, and they remain chilling in each instance. (My companion at INFAMOUS was enraged, not having seen CAPOTE, that INFAMOUS treated such brutal killers so sympathetically–in Perry’s case, as a romantic fantasy–but she acknowledged that this film is excellent.) Based on the treatments of that central event, I’d recommend seeing the lighter (but not lite) INFAMOUS first, followed by the ascetically satisfying CAPOTE, and then the 1967 Richard Brooks original on the subject. The reverse order would not do INFAMOUS, well, “justice.”

The year is 2174. The population of Earth has reached over 24 billion. Famine and wars are commonplace. In a last ditch effort to save humankind, we send out a probe to find a planet that can sustain us. The mission is a success, though it will take over a hundred years to reach the new home…

Fast forward:

Two men wake up from deep sleep; alone, disoriented and suffering from memory loss. As their recollections slowly return, they realize they are part of the space ship crew navigating 60,000 settlers from Earth to the new planet. They have questions, but few answers. Where is everyone? How long have they been asleep? Why are they awake? Who’s on bridge, flying the machine? And finally, once they discover they are NOT alone: what are those things, and where did they come from?!

Butterflies in my stomach? Check. Nails (my own ;o)) digging into my arm? Check. Conversing with friends about the movie long after the end? Check. All are side effects of a well made scary thriller (the sci-fi was just a bonus) and all were present in this case. The story has a great twist, but, best of all, it is largely plot-hole-free, as well as plausible.

So, why four, rather then five stars? Two reasons. Firstly, once answers start coming, they come fast and furious, to the point of being a tad confusing. Secondly, the two main characters are a bit lacking. Until the climactic end, Dennis Quaid spends most of the film saying “Bower, are you there…are you there, Bower?” He is a good actor but the script does not give him much to work with, leaving his talent underused. Ben Foster (the Angel from X-Men the Last Stand), disserves the top billing, as the action revolves mainly around him. Still, a more charismatic actor may have drawn us further into the character. There is a nice appearance from Cung Le, a Vietnamese-American real life martial arts champion (you may remember him from Fighting). He is a talkative passanger with all the answers, but, to Bower’s frustration, no English. The man can move, but his awesome skills are not fully utilized here either. Shame…

This is not another Alien or Predator. It will not change the direction of film evolution. Still, Pandorum satisfactorily delivers scary, creepy sci-fi with a well put together story and a hopeful ending (I miss those!). It entertains!

See the movie BELOW, about the WW2 submarine? A sleeper right? Seeing this with low expectations reminded me of seeing that with low expectations. Especially when the ending credits came up and I realized that they made it all the way to the end without losing it.

When I first saw the trailers for Pandorum I said (as it seems a few others did), well, I gotta see it but it’s probably another Event Horizon or an Aliens(1 or 2) ripoff attempt or a space zombie “bug hunt”. (And I joked with my wife that Quaid must need some quick cash to re-do his basement or something, and he’d probably be killed off in the third scene when it’s too late to get your ticket money back.)

Not that there’s anything wrong with any of those things, Event Horizon was good for the first half till it overexplained the obvious, Aliens 1/2 were classics that deserve homage and Resident Evil (1 and 3) were great zombie fun with excellent fight dancing. (And every actor is human with human cash needs.)

I missed this in the theatre and forgot about it till I went looking for MOON on DVD and noticed this came out at the same time, MOON was out of stock so I got this.

It’s good, I have to say it’s really good. Like all science fiction / horror fans I pride myself on being able to guess the inevitable twist and I’m pretty good but not this time. Not for the multiple twists.

After being SOOOOOOOOOOOO INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED by Avatar’s ripping off Every Lousy children’s use-syfy-to-cover-the-stinking-preaching storyline, this Pandorum film was a refreshing fun adult Action/SF flick.

Good multiple ending twists, fun and toe-curling fight scenes with well done good-olde “bug hunting” icon wink Buy Pandorum At Amazon! and a final ending that while “happy” actually worked well and satisfied without feeling like it was tacked on just because it tested well.

Glad I bought it, it’s a keeper. Cudos to the crew and cast. Remember guys, the good SF usually doesn’t do well at the box office but eventually rises to the top in home sales.

This movie reminds me why I should not listen to critics. I had the urge to buy it when I saw it in my local store. I resisted after reading the headlines of major critics’ reviews and purchased it on demand instead. After finishing the movie I regretted it-only because I will now be gladly paying full price for it. I should have gone with my gut feeling and just bought it for the full 20 bucks.

You are either a fan of this genre or you or not. If you are then this is a must own. If you are not then it is still a quality rental. It was MUCH better than I expected.

Bill Murray is Bob Harris, a once celebrated American actor who now, in his middle-age, has found more acceptance and money from the people of Japan than from his bear country. He arrives at a prestigious hotel in Tokyo and is given a royal treatment by his greeters and hosts. He is by himself in the land of the rising sun, his wife and kids having stayed behing in the US while he travels across the globe to do some liquor commercials. This Tokyo excursion will pick about a week, and the monetary reward will be quite fair. Difference this with Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), who is at the same hotel tagging along with her photographer husband, John (Giovanni Ribisi), as he does a multiple-day photo shoot. John is at work most of the time, and so Charlotte is by herself at the hotel, her attempts to retain from being bored proving fruitless. Both Bob and Charlotte are married people, but they are also very lonely people, and that is what “Lost In Translation” is all about.

Bob and Charlotte score glimpses of one another at different places in the hotel, and finally choose to announce in earnest at the hotel bar. The entire space of the film is about these two people getting to know each other. The tale revolves around them. In fact, the memoir *is* them. Bob, in his early-fifties, is extinct enough to be Charlotte’s dad, but that doesn’t matter here. It’s not about age. It’s about the space, and the points that each of these people are at in their lives. Bob loves his children very considerable, but we do not sense he feels the same for his wife. We hear her on the phone when she calls him, and the same weary sentiment seems to lag from her squawk. They are becoming a couple in name only. Then there’s Charlotte & John. Both are young, and both are self-possessed. John is into his photography to the point of neglecting Charlotte. But we bag the concept that even if gave her more attention, Charlotte might not really warm up to him. She has issues of her have. If Bob is going through a mid-life crisis, then Charlotte seems to be going through a young-life crisis.

“Lost In Translation” is about being alone. Loneliness doesn’t always mean that someone is physically separated from loved ones or from people in general. One can be alone in the middle of a crowded room. Such is the case with Bob & Charlotte. They’re in Japan for a week. They don’t really philosophize the language. Bob’s wife is in the US, and Charlotte’s husband is always at a photo shoot. The two lost souls collect each other at the hotel, expend time with one another, and even sleep in the same bed together. But we know that while this is providing a miniature comfort for the time being, it is not a lasting solution to their problems. And we also understand that both Bob and Charlotte — even if Bob’s wife were in Tokyo with him, and John was by Charlotte’s side all the time — would collected be lonely. Their life struggles lie deeper than what one person can provide, especially the persons they have chosen to resolve down with.

This is probably Bill Murray’s most understated performance, and it works brilliantly. He lets you in on Bob’s emotions without betraying too considerable sentimentality. He conveys so distinguished with fair a smile, a frown, his body language, or simply the contemplate in his eyes. He should fetch an Oscar nomination for this. Scarlett Johansson, who left me unimpressed in the movie “Ghost World” a few years ago, is first-rate in her role here. She portrays Charlotte as a deep, stunned, yet brilliant young woman and, like her co-star, does it without overstating it. She spends mighty of her cloak time walking around a hotel room in her pink panties, and does it so simply and matter-of-factly that it becomes both vulnerable and sexy at the same time. Johansson is definitely an actress to ogle for in the coming years.

Sofia Coppola has succeeded in creating a sliver of time & site with “Lost In Translation”. It creates two of the most realistic characters to ever grace the cinema. You forget this is a movie, and open to really care for these people as though they really exist. And you rep the feeling that this is a single, solitary moment that will be over with and then fondly remembered by the characters for a long time to reach. This sweeps over you before the film is even over, grand like when you are in the middle of a special occurence or event in your absorb life, and you discontinuance and consider about the fact that at one point – very soon – it will finish to be the expose, and will instead become only a nostalgic memory.

And there you have “Lost In Translation”

This movie is tiresome paced. However I didn’t gather it lifeless at all. I loved the scenery and the runt glimpses into everyday Japanese life, all meshed together with this admire yarn of two people brought together by loneliness and uncertainty, with a musical soundtrack that brings out the best in all of it.

After watching this film, the first thing that sprang to my mind was that I’m so joyful I don’t rely on Amazon reviewers to gain a decision about whether I am going to witness a film or not. That’s almost as tiring, as asking a fifteen year traditional to sit through it and not go crazy or pass out. This film is too customary, dealing with grown-up questions, situations and problems that the kiddies here have yet to pick.

Bill Murray’s character is going through a midlife crisis; Scarlet Johansen’s is tormented that she cannot seem to recognize her purpose in life. Both are trapped in a state where they know no one, and understand nothing. They gravitate to one another and topple into a kind of appreciate that is very recent, but also not at all odd under the circumstances. They don’t pursue it physically, because they live in a true world with staunch consequences and have to respect the promises they made to people they both calm care for.

No kid unusual out of tenth grade will ever be able to comprehend these emotions… no wonder most of these reviews are from people who were bored stiff. “No sex? No violence? This movie SUCKS”, seems to be the method it works with these Amazon reviews.

Too poor. Maybe when they all grow up they’ll obtain it. I recommend this movie to grown ups who like minimalist dramas and romantic comedies. If you’re expecting a samurai to jump out with a sword, pass this movie up. This film is about human emotions.

Attention: For those who did not read George Orwell’s classic dystopian current “1984″ in high school, college, or through personal initiative, please choose the time to do so before diving into the soul shattering experience of the film version of this book, aptly titled “1984.” I imagine that many viewers could experience lapses of vulgar boredom if they do not have a sufficient view of newspeak, thoughtcrime, and the political dynamics of Oceania/Eastasia/Eurasia before experiencing this soul shattering film. You might even want to read a few items about communism and fascism before watching the movie. In any event, the book and film are chilling in their presentation of a world in the grip of pure totalitarianism.

Originally released in 1984, “1984″ tells the anecdote of Winston Smith. Smith lives and works in what venerable to be the city of London, before an atomic war swept away the world as we know it and ushered in the shaded gloom of Huge Brother. Smith spends his days working away in a booth at the Ministry of Information, constantly updating and rewriting the party organs in order to invent history fit with expose realities. In the course of a day’s work, Winston routinely changes rationing promises, removes people labeled as “non-persons” from articles, and burns records. During his off hours, he sits in his ratty apartment under the constant surveillance of the space, which keeps an explore on him through a giant monitor in his living room and with hovering helicopters outside his window. Occasionally, Winston gets to serve giant party rallies where he and other members of INGSOC view televised propaganda tapes about the endless war with Eastasia (or is it Eurasia? ) . Each day is bleak, filled with consumer shortages, the endless nattering of propaganda in the background (“War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength, Freedom is Slavery”), and dreams about his life as a child or a plot in the countryside.

Unfortunately for Winston, he objective cannot accomplish himself glean the prevailing understanding, namely that one need only give oneself up to the party and never query anything INGSOC pronounces as truth. His job reconstructing history makes him acutely aware that the party lies incessantly, and in Winston’s world losing faith in the party means losing one’s life after visiting Room 101 in the Ministry of Cherish. To develop matters worse, Winston catches the see of the comely Julia and fleet becomes embroiled in seditious activities that Broad Brother more than frowns upon. After Winston falls in with a high party official named O’Brien, the downward spiral begins in earnest, leading to an interrogation that is definitely an upsetting viewing experience.

This film is by necessity an intensely character driven vehicle. Thankfully, director Michael Radford obtained the services of John Afflict and Richard Burton to play Winston and O’Brien. Pain shines as the tortured Winston, looking as though he’s on death’s door while he trudges through another bland day in Oceania. Burton is properly menacing as the enigmatic O’Brien, playing his role of party thug with equal parts compassion (oddly enough) and threat. I know less about Suzanna Hamilton, the actress who plays Julia, although she does an admirable job working between two mountainous film stars. Incidentally, this was Burton’s last film role.

I loved the atmosphere of this film. Radford creates a dank, dingy London I wouldn’t even contemplate about strolling through without a chubby body protection suit. The ubiquitous audio and visual propaganda is a nice touch as well, creating a sense of total immersion in Winston’s world. As Winston slogs through the bombed out backdrop of London on his design to work, the viewer becomes aware of the party’s total grip on the people through the canard of total war. The omnipresent image of Astronomical Brother should certainly bring a smirk to anyone familiar with Russian history, since the guy looks a lot like Lenin.

I noticed that the Eurythmics soundtrack, while advertised on the case and in the credits, is missing from the film. This did not bother me remarkable since I first saw the film years ago and do not remember powerful about the soundtrack other than the satisfactory regain by Dominic Muldowney… I feel sorry for those who looked forward to having that piece of the soundtrack included in their lift. Despite this omission, the film is very noteworthy worth the money.

Great imagery, expansive acting, and a mountainous message about the evils of 20th century fascism and communism build “1984″ a must have for any film lover. I’ll contemplate John Distress in nearly anything, but he really turns in a great performance here. Consume up this movie and examine for the warning signs!

“Nineteen Eighty-Four” (the genuine on-screen title) is a rare example of a film adaptation of a book that faithfully transfers the visions and theme of the book’s author, accurate down to even filming on the dates that the author specified (April-June 1984) . George Orwell’s repugnant, hellish recent of a future where freedom has vanished, even from the minds of human beings, has been turned into an equally homely film version. Its myth of a government that seeks to utterly crush the human spirit through propaganda, language, and anxiety, turning human beings into programmed machines, has never been more repulsive than today. It is a book and movie for all times, as long as governments lie, tyrannies exist, and people surrender their freedoms in the name of fears, both sincere and imagined.

The casting couldn’t be more perfect. John Damage, looking conventional and stretched past his years, is the ideal actor to play “minute rebel” Winston Smith, who dares to judge against the mysterious Astronomical Brother and to drop in appreciate. In his last film role, Richard Burton is like a glaring Greek Statue, stern and unflappable and scary. It’s an unnerving and stout performance. As for Suzanna Hamilton, Winston’s savor Julia, I was jumpy when I first saw the movie: she matched exactly the image of Julia I had in my head when I read the book.

Director Michael Radford (who also directed “Il Postino”) imagines the world of George Orwell exactly as the author would have if he had directed the film: as a wrecked vision of late-40s Britain if it had lost World War II. The region develop is sparkling, combing some high technology (video screens and computers) with rusty mid-forties technology (pneumatic tubes, rotary phones) . Everywhere is decay and deprivation. Nothing really works, everything is bland and frightening in that dreadful, gray-stone block style that dominated Soviet and Chinese government architecture of the 1940s and 1950s. No doubt about it, the director understood where Orwell was coming from, and the models he was using.

Just like the book, “Nineteen Eighty-Four” is a film that will utterly devastate you, pick up under your skin, and change the diagram you gawk at the world. It is a masterpiece.

(A label on the disc: Although they receive credit, the music by the Eurythmics has been completely removed, as per the wishes of the director. Since this is a no-frills DVD without powerful in the plot of extras, there is no alternate music track to let people hear the novel theatrical soundtrack. However, the film is great great better without the Eurythmics; they don’t fit the style and feel of the film or the fantastic recent music. Also, the washed-out photographic style of the recent released has been changed to a more natural look; but this has been fair of every version since the theatrical release. None of this should prevent you from getting bear of this improbable movie.)
